Tongariro Alpine Crossing

04:30 Uhr. Der Wecker klingelte. Es war schwer sich aus dem Bett zu erheben, aber man wusste, dass es heute auf einen atemberaubenden Wanderweg geht. Nach einem kleinen Frühstück ging es im National Park Village mit einem uralten Bus in Richtung des Startpunktes. Knapp 20km voller Aufregung, Landschaften, wie sie in den Herr der Ringe-Büchern stehen und Aufstiegen, welche dann doch gut anstrengend waren. Der Weg führte uns zwischen Mount Tongariro und Mount Ngauruhoe hindurch, bevor es dann nach oben ging. Nach dem erstem Anstieg (2.Bild) waren wir dann auf 1700m und genossen den Ausblick, bevor uns leider die Wolken den Blick versperrten. Weiter ging es auf knapp 2000m zum Red Crater (3.Bild), welcher den Blick in Richtung der Emerald Lakes und des Blue Lakes führte. Über einen sehr steilen Schotterhang, bestehenden aus lockerem Vulkangestein, ging es dann nach unten zu den Seen (5.& 6. Bild). Nach einem letzten, kleineren Anstieg hatten wir eine gute Sicht auf den gesamten Krater und auf den zu Stein gewordenen Lavafluss (4.Bild). Jetzt waren es 'nur' noch knapp 8km bergab und wir konnten nach 9h und 25.2km in den Bus auf dem Weg zu Sveti steigen.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

04:30 o'clock. The alarm clock rang. It was hard to get up from the bed, but we knew that we are going on a breathtaking footpath today. After a small breakfast we got picked up by an old school bus an drove from the National Park Village towards the starting point. 20 km full of excitement, sceneries, like the onces in the 'Lord of the Ring'-books and rises which were nevertheless strenuous. The way led us through between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, before it went then upwards. After the first rise (2nd picture) we were on 1700m and enjoyed the view. Unfortunately, the clouds obstructed the view right after. Further we went on nearly 2000m to the Red Crater (3rd picture) which led the look in the direction of the Emerald Lakes and the Blue Lakes. The first descent led over a very precipitous grit slope, existing from loose volcano rock to the beautiful lakes (5. & 6th picture). After the last, smaller increase we had a good view. We could see the whole crater and the lava river which became stone (4th picture). 'Only ' 8km downhill left and we could say 'we did it!' After 9hours and 25.2km we drove back to Sveti and went to the campground. What an amazing day.Read more
