    Sea Day One

    Yesterday ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Up at 8am because we had to set our clocks ahead two hours. It’s incredibly foggy, we can’t hardly see the ocean even on deck. Mom and I did a lot of the activities on the ship. We bombed Morning trivia but did surprisingly well on visual sports personalities.

Later we played ‘Heads Up’ which was basically reverse charades. I volunteered under duress and at the urging of our new Australian friend and her mom. I did pretty well guessing and everyone else did a great job of acting the prompts out.

We haven’t been very hungry (which isn’t unusual while cruising) and I hadn’t gotten seasick. But the evening trivia was in Spinnaker which is at the tip top of the front of the ship. I got about halfway through…then got nauseous. Aaaand that was it for me today. Went to bed and I’m hoping it’ll be better tomorrow.

We are in the middle of the line of Kurile Islands.

Kushiro - OR Why I’m a Bad Tourist

    April 14 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

We didn’t have to rush today because I was a bad tourist…NCL has made it impossible for anyone who isn’t on a tour or paying $20 a head for the shuttle bus. We docked in a completely different port than was expected…in the middle of nowhere. The closest bus/train stop is almost 3 miles away. Even there there is nothing but warehouses empty space and shipping companies. The least expensive tour was over $200 per person. Oh but there was a shuttle bus, only $20 per person to a fisherman’s wharf not near anything either.

The port listed wasn’t where we were docked. I’d attempted to plan the day but because we were in a different place nothing I’d planned the day before was possible. I spoke with a lady at guest services…she tried to insist we WERE in the downtown port. I showed her the Google map that pinpointed our position. She caved and said she didn’t know why they changed port, but was probably so they could sell more shuttle bus tickets. Fed up we decided to pivot plans. We went to HobbyOff and Daiso in Tottori-dori.

Off we go, and the photographer who’s been joking with us, Italo, might have sensed we were miffed but took pics anyway. Bet those will be interesting shots. In the taxi line, we watched people wander away, vanishing into the cold mist. They had no idea how far from anything we were.

We got to the store just before they opened and it was massive. There was so much there I finally just had to stop and pay for the stuff I’d found. Aaand we might have purchased a small suitcase too. The 100 yen store next door was nice as well. When we were done it dawned on us we had no way back…I hopped back into HobbyOff and was able to ask for them to call a taxi. They were so kind and did just that. The taxi arrived and the driver was awesome, I should have asked him to stop at a conbini…one more onigiri for the road. He spoke wonderful English and gave the same excuse I use about my Japanese. Ha! The funniest thing though that as soon as our driver let us out he completely ignored the other cruisers in line for taxi, turned around, waved and left!

There was a small tent at the small excuse of a port selling local things they were very nice and I ended up choosing one of the items the lady made herself. She was quite proud…granted it was a bit odd as it was advertising orange milk.

I wish we’d had an option to do something more cultural but since the ship was so far away there was no way we could do it on our own. Back on board we were herded into the face to face immigration check. No problem there, no line either. We will see how many people ignore the mandatory procedure.

Mom and I found a slightly better disembarkation excursion since our flight out of Anchorage isn’t until 9pm. We are about to ask about the details…aaaaaand we got the lady who is hard to understand and didn’t understand us the first time we talked with her. So the train trip listed doesn’t exist…they use a generic sheet and leave nonexistent tours on the page.

Mom went to get a printout of her account and the lady at the front desk said, “Go book an excursion and come back and see me.” She took care of canceling our previous transfer.

Saw the show tonight. It was a saxophonist. He was funny and turned the no photo/video of performances on its head. He encouraged filming.

Not very hungry…kinda sad we are leaving Japan. We will have five sea days after this, and two Tuesdays because of the international date line. Tonight we have to set our clocks ahead two hours.

    Aomori/Hirosaki Castle

    April 13 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

So…. Let’s take a moment to grumble. Since I got on the ship and even before, I’ve been trying to figure out how to get us to the Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival in Hirosaki. The city is at least an hour away by bus or train. We arrive in Aomori at 7, no idea how long it would take us to actually get off the ship and to the main station to catch said bus/train. No matter how I ran the numbers I couldn’t guarantee that we would get back to the ship by all aboard time at 4:30pm. So we bite the bullet and go to the excursion desk. Lo and behold there an excursion exactly where I wanted to go. But not an online listing or even in the NCL app, but printed on a sheet of paper set up next to the adverts for Mandala Spa.

Great, problem solved, right? Nope-sold out. We were put on the waiting list with 15 people ahead of us. Now, I think I handled the disappointment well (mostly) and mom rallied to speak with a different person whilst I sulked. No dice.

I proceeded to sulk at dinner. I sulked through my soft serve ice cream. I managed to take a pretty picture of Hakodate lit up at night. Then I sulked back down to our room convinced I’d blown any hope of getting to Hirosaki…

We had tickets waiting for us at our door. To Hirosaki…I sulked for nothing…

Now back to our regularly scheduled story…

Up around 6:30 and had breakfast then headed to the Starlight Theater to meet up with the group. We were in the first bus and our guide was Junko-San. We rode about an hour and a half to Hirosaki.

First stop was Tsugaru Neputa Village. There we heard shamisen, taiko and shakuhachi instruments and admired their fan shaped floats. The workshop was fun as many artisans were there working. The spinning top toy maker and I kinda gambled what number the top would stop on and I won. I even found Sakura themed Ichigo Daifuku.

We walked to Hirosaki Castle next. The cherry blossoms weren’t completely out, most were just buds. Still very pretty and our group was pretty cool. We didn’t get a lot of history though. It was built in the Warring States period and was the seat of the Tsugaru clan who were overthrown at the beginning of the Meiji period.

It was tricky to keep everyone together so one of the participants shouted for everyone to line up, we did, and it worked. Hahaha and there were no kids in our group. But half of us grabbed some Festival food…I got a blue chocolate banana. We got back at 2. We were supposed to get a meal with the excursion but that didn’t happen. Still we were able to see many things and talk to a lot of interesting people.

Back on the boat we tried the Movie Kiss trivia with Yanar. We did ok but it was all kinda silly. E we made paper flowers with the splash kiddo team and tried trivia again. We bombed spectacularly. Saw the show “We Will Rock You” lots of good music and exceptional dancing.

Both of us are tired so we will turn in early tonight.

    Hakodate

    April 12 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Woke up at 5:30. Realized the Internet Hockey Puck decided to eat the charging cable. Finally got the piece out with a pair of nail clippers.

Mom up around 7:30 and breakfast at the Garden Buffet. Mom had someone cut in front of her three times. But mom didn’t go after her so that was a plus. We decided to wait in the main atrium for the all clear to go ashore. I helped some people plan their day and made sure they had a picture of a map to get back.

The line to disembark was nuts as usual; mom and I got stopped at the stairs because they needed to clear out the first wave of people. Again a number of people tried to cut line when there was a literal velvet rope blocking the staircase. I ended up body blocking most of cutters. The experience isn’t helping mom’s opinion of a certain group.

We ended up getting a taxi super fast somehow and went to the Goryokaku Tower to see the star shaped fort. No cherry blossoms yet sadly but it was still impressive. We also found that Hakodate had the cutest bird ever called Shimaenaga (aka the long-tailed tit.) pfft…

Got in another taxi to go to the Hakodate Botanical Gardens to see the ‘hot tubbing monkeys.’ The place wasn’t like advertised though and the monkeys looked pretty rough.

Got another taxi to go to the Hakodate Meijikan for a bit of souvenir hunting. Lovely set of shops in the original 1911 post office. I forgot one yen of my change and the shopkeeper ran after me to make sure I got it back. Only in Japan… There was also a Teddy Bear Museum on the second floor that housed bears that had been customized by famous people including the Dali Lama!

We were up to walking back to the ship but Google maps decided to stage a coup…So get another taxi back. We had interesting drivers all day from the First Lady taxi driver I’ve met in Japan to the grimy looking one who demanded i count my change and wasn’t as grumpy as first thought to the least taxi that opened the car door at the terminal only to drive on further with mom half out the door.

Late 2pm-ish lunch at O’Sheean’s. The waiters there are a hoot and keep trying to feed me and mom more food. One got me to try the soup of the day, Mexican Gumbo. My mouth is still on fire. Met a nice lady who used to be a professional ballerina and had a good talk with her about her travels. Back to the room for a rest around 4pm. Not sure what we are planning for this evening…will update tomorrow.

    Sendai

    April 11 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Up at 5:30am, breakfast at 6. Naps at 7 waiting for the all clear to leave the ship. Surprisingly we did NOT dock in Ishinomaki but Sendai itself.

Madness insured with the line because people can’t follow instructions, cue long lines. On shuttle to Sendai around 11. They dropped us off in front of Sendai Station which was reminiscent of Shinjuku Station with raised platforms and shops.

Mom and I ventured out heading for the Tourist Info desk about 15 minutes away. I gave 500 yen to a chanting priest and he prayed for our safe travels. Saw some ladies from our shop looking kinda lost and we suggested the furthest from the station the more local things they find. Stopped at 7/11 for drinks and I did one of the kuji pulls like Key told me to and won third prize, a big cushion of Cherry Blossom Miku.

We got to the info desk and spoke with the lady there about where to go to make local crafts. She sent us to the next building to a small craft counter where you could buy crafts but not make them. The lady there hooked us up with another store in the shopping street parallel to the main road called Kokeshi no Shimanuki. Mom and I painted our own little kokeshi dolls. Very fun but I didn’t realize what a perfectionist mom is.

Afterwards we went back to the station and the bus area to catch the shuttle back to the ship at 3:00. Chilled for a bit, ate dinner and caught the Stevie Wonder tribute show. The sea is kicking up though.

    To the ship

    April 10 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Today we will go to the boat! But first we woke up at about 5am. Luckily (?) the Don Quijote in Akiba is open 24/7 so we went there. Afterwards we had a quick breakfast, packed and left our bags at the front desk when we checked out around 9:30. We went out again to Yodobashi Camera to go to the 100 yen store. The front desk was kind enough to call us a taxi that arrived in less than 5 minutes. We rode to the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal in Odaiba.

There was quite a bit of confusion but we had everything ready, bag tags, documents, passports et al. We got to the waiting gate and suddenly a lady near us hollered, “You’re the girl from Surfside!” It was the couple from a cruise to Canada in 2022. Bonnie had fell on the way to the bus and hit her face very hard on concrete. The bus wasn’t going anywhere so I hopped off and found her some ice. No big deal. I figured anyone would have done the same but I was the youngest so off I went. Anytime we saw them after that on the trip they called me their hero. So now I guess I’m still their hero. Hahaha.

Mom is Sapphire Status now so we got to skip the second queue. Got right on the boat after that and found a quiet place to wait for our room to be ready. Granted the internet area might not have been the best choice, hahaha. The entitlement has already begun. Mom and I figure we will just kill with kindness.

    Tokyo Speed Run

    April 9 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

Up at 7ish this morning. Got some items repacked and had to get an umbrella since it’s raining. Breakfast at Denny’s to get ready for a big day…

First stop was Nakano Broadway. Then to Kameido Hobby Off. Back to Akihabara for lunch at Jonathan’s to see the cat robot. Returned to Hotel strong 4:30. I headed back out into the fray to look around some more. It was tremendously busy though so I got back right before 7:30.

Took a nice bath and repacked. Tomorrow e will attempt to hit Daiso (dollar store) before heading to the cruise port.

    On our way

    April 7 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Up at 3:30 am but actually slept some, so yay. Greg drove us to the Myrtle Beach Airport (Key opted to stay home) and e we checked in and all the normal stuff with no issues.

Both flights were uneventful save for the fact we had to wait an hour and a half on the tarmac wait for a special airplane part to take to Haneda (for a different plane, not ours.) the total flight time from Atlanta to Haneda was 13 hours. So even though we were late taking off we still somehow beat our original arrival time. Customs was customs.

We took a taxi to Hotel Mystays Ochanomizu and got some conbini food after check in, ate and headed out again to change money and try to find distilled water for mom…ok fine and shop a little too. We hit Matsumoto Kiyoshi pharmacy, Lashing Bang, backstreets Mulan and the supermarket. No go for the water but found other things. Mom days mom says she’ll be fine for the two night with the CPAP.

We stayed awake till almost 8:30pm.

    Heading home

    January 27 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Quick recap of what I forgot in 12 hours-there was an ice carving demonstration. He made a swan. Saw the shore last night “Beatles: Abbey Road” then dinner at the sit down restaurant Taste. Packing wasn’t bad.

Mom woke up early and we headed out around 7. In the atrium I asked about disembarkation and even though the first group (us) wasn’t scheduled to leave until 8:15, they were already letting people off the ship. So we queued up, got through immigration and into the shuttle bus without trouble. People followed the rules and acted like adults this time.

The airport was a mess…we got through everything and to our gate at 10:30….

Ok, WTH SouthWest?!?! Free for all seating!? People can’t hardly deal with being assigned a seat so you think it’s easier to just shove everyone on and hope for the best? It’s the flipping Wild West up in here! Urrgh!

Ok ok, I’m calm (-ish) now. The steward on our second leg was hilarious and we got to move up to the front of the plane. Silly me forgot that Nashville is on central time and ran halfway across the airport to get to the gate be 4:10pm. After a weird look the gate agent reminded me of the time change. I’m very embarrassed, but we didn’t miss anything!!

Aaaaaand we are in Myrtle @ 6:51!

    Hello again Cozumel

    January 26 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We docked again at Cozumel. But the area was different and instead of one long shopping store we were docked near a ring of smaller shops. There was a lot of barkers trying to get us to come into their stores. One actually insisted we come in and stand under the AC a bit. It was a jewelry store and we kept telling him we weren’t buying anything. He ended up giving us two small whale tail charms anyway for free. Everyone we interacted with were pleasant if not a little pushy. Got some good souvenirs.

Back at the boat we tried trivia again. One of the cruise activity staff, Maaheir, made the questions nearly impossible. Jerk.

We also made shirts for the Glow Party. And made balloon… things. We will need to start packing tomorrow.
