    On our way home.

    Well this is our last day and we woke to heavy cloud and cooler temperatures which was a disappointment but on the up side the lady who runs the appartments told us we could stay as long as we want so we relaxed with our books for a bit then stretched our legs with a walk to the bar, the sea does not look as pretty today. After packing and having a late lunch the sun puts in an appearance but it's too late for us aswe decide it's time to leave for the airport. It has been a wonderful holiday and I think we will be back.Read more

    Almyrida, holiday almost over

    Today has been a very lazy day, chilling by the pool and reading till late afternoon, then off down the beach so Martin can have a last swim. This evening we returned to 'Elpis' restaurant in Plaka a small village on a hill above Alymrida. This is the third time we have been here, and not just because the wine is buy one litre get one litre free!The meals are fabulous and enormous, with free Irish coffee tonight, the staff are friendly and the setting is lovely, yet another lovely evening, sorry to say the holiday is nearly over but it has certainly been one we won't forget.Read more

    Rethymno

    Today we caught the bus to Rethymmo, a mini version of Chania. The bus ride took us about 45 minutes, that was the express one only stopping a few times. We actually found a 'prom' to walk along. Beautiful blue sea again but very warm and muggy today. We walked around the harbour and then started to explore the small narrow streets, we had lunch, Feta Cheese Salad and did some shopping. Catching the bus home from the bus station was an experience, no signs, no bus stands just a lot of people trying to get on a few buses and being marshalled by Greeks who only just worked out our pronunciation of Kyleves.Read more

    Day at leisure

    Today we didn't go far. We spent most of the day reading either by the pool or in the shade. Early evening we went to Koumos Tavern, a local tourist attraction, the taverna is covered in pebbles and rock, including a parosol and walls. Managed to get a few sunset pictures but it is hard as the sun goes down on the other side of the mountains. Back to Almyrida for our evening meal. Yet another great greek plateful with wine and complimentary extras. What a great island!!Read more

    Agriopoulious 2

    After walking around higher town we drove down to the the lower town for lunch. The water from the natural springs was flowing from all the rocks giving a fresh feel on a hot day. Lunch was Feta Cheese Salad, Bread , Tzarsuki and Cheese Pies. After few hours soaking up the sun back at our apartment in Alrymida we then revisited the taverna in Plaka for our evening meal. I managed to get a photo of the sunset today, not very picturesque but the best I can get so far.Read more

    Today's we went back up into the lower mountains to Agriopolious a town of two halves, an upper and lower. The upper town had a more rural feel with a few archaeological features like the ruins and a Roman mosaic floor.Read more

    West coast

     September 16, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    Today we drove to the west coast of the island and the first stop was Falasarna. We stopped and went paddling in the sea, it was beautifully warm and the most beautiful colour turquoise and blue, the pictures don't do it justice. We then drove along the coast road through Agia Marina, not our cup of tea, a bit like a low rise Benidorm. We did have one of the biggest Chocolate Eclairs ever for lunch though so what's not to like.Read more

    Sunday at leisure

     September 15, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

    Today is a rest day, mainly because I don't feel well, it could be the sun, it could be the weather or it could be the wine from last night, either way I don't feel like doing much so we have a lazy day by the pool then pop out for an ice cream and a walk to the caravan bar at the far end of the beach. The high winds and rough seas have taken its toll on our little town, but the water has subsided and the road is now passable, don't think Martin will be walking on this jetty today though. Back home for more R & R before having a pizza for tea, cheapest meal of the holiday, 1 Litre of wine 4 Euro's, can't be bad and the pizzas are fab.Read more

    Day at leisure

     September 14, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    Today is a day at leisure, mainly because we didn't wake up early. We did a bit of shopping to stock up on the essentials, e.g. Cereal and Gin then mainly stayed around the apartment. On our walk into town we realised that the strong winds from yesterday had taken it's toll on the town. The sea had broken through the beach and flooded part of the road. In the afternoon we walked into Plaka and had a walk around followed buy a drink in the taverna, asked for the bill and we were presented with the bill and another drink, we then decided this would be a good place to eat.Read more
