• Day 8: Visit to Castle de Belver

    June 30, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    What an experience!.
Fun fact: water for the use in Castle is stored in cisterns below the casle and is purified by Eels! Yes, you read that correctly🙉 the eels feed on the rats and bacteria. This is still done today in the older houses in majorca, with no mains water. Our guide told us she was blisfully unaware of this until she was informed by the people testing her water she needed the eels replaced!!!!!

Back to the castle. On the top of the castle, there are 3 towers, North. East, south, and west. The north tower, the tallest, was used for storing food. The other three smaller towers were lookouts to warn the town against attacks from pirates and also as prisons. The names of prisoners are inscribed on the walls of the towers. In the case of enemies approaching, a fire was made on the top of the tower to warn the townspeople.

Also, the greenery growing on the walls of the castle and old buildings around town is actually capers! Yes, the green little things on pizzas and salads!

In the middle of the inside of the palace is a theatre where concerts are held every Friday as it has great acoustics!
Inside the Palace is a museum with original sculptures discovered/ dug up on the Island.
An experience that left us in amazement.
