    2024年7月7日, マレーシア ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Had the best time away together! We laughed until we cried, we indulged in delicious food, went overboard shopping, let mum loose on her scooter on the streets of Barcelona, walked a million steps, but mostly felt blessed to be with each other!!!もっと詳しく

    Day 12: Two Churches

    2024年7月6日〜10日 ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We were blessed to enter two beautiful churches in Portofino!
The first was Martino Church. It is a historic gem that stands as a testament to the village's rich cultural heritage. Its distinctive Romanesque architecture, characterized by a striking striped façade and intricate details, draws you in.
Once inside the church, we were blown away by the religious artworks, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere. Situated on a hill, San Martino provides stunning views of the picturesque and surrounding landscape!!!
We came across some fellow Aussie travellers who pointed us to another church and told us you have to climb a "few" stairs.......... Well, it was a bit more than a few!!!!
San Giacomo Church is perched atop a hill, offering breathtaking views of the village and the Mediterranean Sea. This quaint church, first built in the 12th century, has simple but charming architecture and exudes a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to pause and reflect. The climb to San Giacomo, was definitely worth the effort and made us feel blessed to have experienced its beauty.
Halfway down i realised that i left my bottle of limoncello i have purchased earlier in the church!!! I flew back up those stairs so quick and left carol-lynne crawling on the floor with laughter🤣🤣🤣

    Day 12: Walkways in Portofino

    2024年7月5日, フランス ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Portofino is a picturesque seaside village on the Italian Riviera, renowned for its charming walkways that meander through the heart of the town.
As we strolled along these paths, we encountered numerous entrances to private villas, each exuding its unique style and character. This diversity in architecture and design made our walk feel much shorter and far more enjoyable!

Did i mention there were lots of stairs????Despite the 100s of stairs we climbed, the experience was enchanting, with each step offering new glimpses of the vibrant life and exquisite beauty that define Portofino.

    Day 12: Portofino

    2024年7月5日, フランス ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Oh my goodness!!! We have very little words to describe this little seaside town!! All we can come up with is AMAZING!! We felt so at home here and contemplated staying behind!!! We are already busy organising our holiday here in 2025!!
As we were walking through the town, all we could say the whole day was "ooh" and "aah" and "look at this":. We were dragging our jaws along the ground😂😂😂
We started our day with a coffee and a divine croissant filled with pistachio cream!
We then walked around the town with its narrow little streets and lush green walkways through the private villas.
We felt energetic and decided to attack the hour walk to the next little town. As we came around a corner, we were blown away by the beautiful Mediterranean ocean spread out before us! I Don't think i have ever seen anything as beautiful!! We even contemplated buying a cossi in town🤣parched from our long stroll, we HAD to stop for a limoncello😄 i also bought the yummiest bottle of locally made limoncello and hope it makes it back safely!!
We were sad to say goodbye, but we will be back in 2025!!!

    Day 11: Streets of Florence

    2024年7月4日, Western Mediterranean ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Wish we had more time here, but we fell in love with this city! It's so vibrant and full of history!!
The round tall building used to be a prison for women who practice whichcraft and pread views were not in line with the preachings of the church! Today, it is apartments for the wealthy!
We left Florence in love with the city and vowing to be back!!

    Day 11: Florece

    2024年7月4日, Western Mediterranean ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

After Pisa, we were off to Florence. We instantly fell in love with this city. Florence is the capital of Tuscany and its most populated city!! The streets are swarming with people, and oh, then there are the cars trying to use the roads too!! In ancient times, the city was the centre
    for trade.
Our guide took us on a walking tour through Florence, pointing out some of the major landmarks.
The first stop was another beautiful church, Duomo Cathedral. built in 124 AD. This church is massive and constructed with marble!!! There are two parts to this church. The front building is for baptisms and the big church behind this. At the front is a statue with Mary and Jesus's and above the door is a painting of God giving His blessing.
To the left of the church is a huge statue of David.
After some lunch and a stroll through the city, it was time to meet our driver, who would return us back to the ship. It ended up being a very stressful experience and one we were lucky to survive, as our driver was swirving across lanes because he was struggling to stay awake!!!!!!!!! No joke!!!

    Day 11: Pisa

    2024年7月4日, Ligurian Sea ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

After meeting our guide in Livorno, we started the 40-minute drive to our first stop, Pisa. An american family of 4, who we got on with very well, joined us for the drive in a black Mercedes minivan. Felt a bit like we were in some spy, top secret movie!!
Our first stop was a big courtyard with three buildings. The building on the left, first photo, is a church. The big, most impressive building was a very prestigious university where Italy's brightest minds are invited to study, and their fees are paid by the government! The third building on the right is a school for lawyers.
Then it was on to Pisa! Nothing could prepare us for this! After trying to nail the perfect photo of "holding Pisa up" and not succeeding, we were rescued by a lovely street seller who showed us how to pose. Apparently, he has been helping tourists get the perfect photo for the past 10 years!!!!

    Day 10: Streets of Rome

    2024年7月4日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Rome was another city that had our jaws dropped to the ground!!
Wish we had more time to explore this ancient city and its history.
By the end of the day, we were exhausted from all the walking but left with a feeling of grattirude that we had the chance to be there!! Blessed beyond measure and memories we will treasure!!

Hot tip: Ensure you have spare coins in Rome when you need to use the restrooms. We encountered a very grumpy old man gaurding the entrance, and with only two coins between us, we had to sacrifice one of our coins😪
That meant we had one coin to share at the Trevi Fountain!!!

Day 10: Churches and monuments in Rome

    2024年7月3日, イタリア ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Rome was so much to take in, but what struck me was regardless of which denomination we belong to, all over the word we all serve the same amazing God!
The detail and art in the facades of these churches are breathtaking and difficult to capture in a photo but something I have not taken for granted to experience in person!!
The first stop was the Roman Forum, where 2000 years ago, the Romans had their markets. When we arrived at the Forum, a street performer played the most beautiful haunting performance, which I included in the video.
The next stop was Venice Square, a central hub in Rome. It is a monument to King Vittorio and the Unification of Italy.
In blistering heat, we continued on to the Trevi Fountain, where we only had one coin to throw into the fountain, so we shared the coin. Our other coin was used to get into the ladies room😂 nothing free these days!!
At the Pantheon, we had 15 min to spare, and carol-lynne bought us each two of the most expensive gelato's at a grand total of $49 AUD, but worth every cent!!!
Last stop after a very hot and long day of walking, we reached the Vatican State and St Peter's Basilica, another beautiful church. We were surprised to learn that the Vatican City mints its own coins, prints its own stamps, and has its own army of Swiss Guards 💂‍♂️
Stendhal once said about Rome. " When you find yourselves in the great company of these masterpieces, you should always behave as if they were individuals who demanded your respect, waiting in silence until they have chosen to speak to you." I could not agree more!!

    Day 10: Rome

    2024年7月2日, イタリア ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Went on an excursion to Rome today. What a day!!!! It was a walking tour of about 7km, starting at the Colloseum and ending at St Paul's Basilica in the Vatican City.
The Colosseum was built in 100 AD, and we were shown pictures by our guide of how it looked then, compared to now!!! The Collosem was used for gladiator fights with each other or with ani.als. for other occasions, the centre was filled with water and used for navy battles. Today, the bottom part of the arena below the arena floor is the only part remaining . Some copper in the Colloseum was also taken out to build a sculpture in St. Paul's Basilica! The original sculptures in each of the arches have also been removed and are housed in a museum.
With temperature over 33 C, needless to say, Carol and I ended the day hot and exhausted!!
We had an hour bus ride from Rome, back to the ship, and headed straight for the pool and a coctail!

    Day 9: Sea day

    2024年7月1日, Tyrrhenian Sea ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

Today was a sailing day on the cruise. We had a bit of s sleep in, went down for some breakfast, and spent the day leisurely checking out this amazing vessel!
Thought we might spend some of the day in the pool, but the weather was overcast all day!
The orange structure is called The Magic Carpet, which is mounted on the side of the ship. It is a bar that moves up and down the ship and opens at a different level each day! Managed to convince Carol-lynne to join me, and she actually loved it🙂
Had a lovely dinner in the French restaurant and then went to watch a show in the theatre. It was a song and dance production of all the residencies in Las Vegas. Absolutely fantastic!! 10/10!!
Tomorrow, we dock in Civitavecchia and a tour of Rome! So excited!!

Day 8: Visit to Castle de Belver

    2024年6月30日, スペイン ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    What an experience!.
Fun fact: water for the use in Castle is stored in cisterns below the casle and is purified by Eels! Yes, you read that correctly🙉 the eels feed on the rats and bacteria. This is still done today in the older houses in majorca, with no mains water. Our guide told us she was blisfully unaware of this until she was informed by the people testing her water she needed the eels replaced!!!!!

Back to the castle. On the top of the castle, there are 3 towers, North. East, south, and west. The north tower, the tallest, was used for storing food. The other three smaller towers were lookouts to warn the town against attacks from pirates and also as prisons. The names of prisoners are inscribed on the walls of the towers. In the case of enemies approaching, a fire was made on the top of the tower to warn the townspeople.

Also, the greenery growing on the walls of the castle and old buildings around town is actually capers! Yes, the green little things on pizzas and salads!

In the middle of the inside of the palace is a theatre where concerts are held every Friday as it has great acoustics!
Inside the Palace is a museum with original sculptures discovered/ dug up on the Island.
An experience that left us in amazement.

What a beautiful city so rich again in history!! Just walked the street in absolute amazement!!! Took a thousand photos of the buildings!
First up was the Palma Cathedral. This Cathedral is also the work of Gaudi! This part of the city is surrounded by a huge wall of 40m high, built centuries ago to protect the citizens against attacks from enemies. They would come to steal the young men from the village and sell them on the slave market in Africa.
The quaint little narrow streets are residential areas, one of which is Rafael Nadal, of course!
We then stumbled upon a gorgeous park with fountains wherever you look!

    Day 7: Boarding the ship

    2024年6月30日, スペイン ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today, we said goodbye and headed for the Cruise Terminal to board the Celebrity Ascent.
First, though, we had to survive a crazy and very fast taxi ride🙉🙉🙉 not sure if he thought we were late, but he raced as if!!!
The ship is just amazing. We just walked around saying 'ooh' and 'wow' all the time.
Already met 4 South African and 5 Australian crew members!!!
After settling in, we went to have some pizza, did some more walking on the ship and then had some dinner.
Finally back in the cabin and off to the land of nod, ready for a day of exploring in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

DAY 6: A day for snacking

    2024年6月28日, スペイン ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Decided to do our own little walking food tour of Barcelona 🥞🥖🍷
What an amazing day we had!
Started with empanadas for brekky; delicious cakes and coffee; followed by tapas and sangria for lunch.
To work off all the calories, we did some shopping and was blown away by the beauty of the inside of Uni Clo. Just WOW!!!
After some more walking and admiring the gorgeous doors to the buildings that only opens through a small section of the door, we found a steak house restaurant for dinner!
From the moment we walked in, we were blown away by the super friendly staff and the most beautiful decor! Then came the food... I have no words, but to say it was the perfect end to the perfect day!!! When we left we were greeted like old friends and even posed for a photo!

    Food!!

    2024年6月28日, スペイン ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Just outside our apartment is a tiny little Cafe that makes THE BEST BAGELS WE HAVE EVER HAD!!!! Needless to say, it has been our brekky every day here!!
Then, of course, there are pastries, ice creams, and paella!! Yum yum yum

We also took a bus down to the beach front and casino. We had some Churos and, of course, chocolate! Oh, and did I mention I am in love with the balconies....???🤣🤣 so romantic!!

I will be trying all these when I get back!!

    Day 4: More of Barcelona!

    2024年6月28日, スペイン ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

I have been intrigued by the ancient water taps on the streets and thought they were just decrations and from way back in the past. A local explained that they are actually fully operational, and it is where they fill their water bottles. Some are hundreds of years old, and before an area is built, these are put in first!

On our walk, we stumbled upon a very unimpressive building but decided to pay a visit as people were streaming in and out. What a delightful discovery we made inside!!! The building is the Historical Archives of the City of Barcelona consisting of over 9km of historical documents of the city!!!!!! It is one of the most important archival institutions in the country. You step into a beautiful courtyard and then follow the stairs up to a lookout, viewing the Gothic city. I was so intrigued by the history and the gorgeous windows upstairs. Could have stayed there forever!!
On our way back, we found a Lego store with a Lego version of one of Gaudi's buildings. Of, and Carol and I nearly bought ourselves some wheels🤣🤣🤣
Our last stop for the day was some Tapas and Sangria for dinner! Yum yum

Day 4: Walking down Las Ramblas

    2024年6月27日, スペイン ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Las Ramblas is a famous street in Barcelona, similar to Hay Street with no traffic.
We enjoyed some yummy gelato and marvelled at the beautiful buildings all around us. All the buildings give a romantic feel with each their own unique balconies. We took soooo many photos of the balconies.
With much anticipation, we headed down one of the side streets on our way to The Gothic Quarter. On our way, we found a gorgeous little gift shop where we oohed and aahed our way through and also had one of the funniest moments of our trip so far. Let me try and set the scene......
In the shop, there are some exquisite masquerade masks, which we thought was a great idea to try on and take some photos. Next minute, a big burly man asks me whether I can speak and read English. Feeling very important and useful, as I thought he needed help, I replied;" yes I can !" . Suddenly, his mood and face changed as he pointed to a huge sign on the shelf, instructing, " please do not touch or try on." I realised we were actually being reprimanded and not asked for help. We stumbled out, unable to breathe as we laughed so much at my gullibility!! Why would someone ask me if I can speak English in Spain as its far likely to be the other way round🤣🤣🤣🤣
We did, however, manage to get the photo 😂😂😂
