    Chichicastenango

    About 2 hours (and 3 chicken buses) away from Panajachel is the small village of Chichicastenango, which is famous mostly for its Thursday and Sunday market. Even on Saturday, there are more than 100 stands packed with fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, household supplies and, most importantly, delicious dishes from black tortillas all the way through chicken soup. If you ever want to try your labyrinth-escaping skills, try out getting lost in a Guatemalan market.
    Moreover, we visit the colorful cemetary up on a hill. We even get the chance to see some Mayan rituals, but in order not to intrude we keep walking. Our last stop is the church, which is shared by catholic and k'iche' (the Mayan group in this region) believers. The church was built by the Spanish conquerors on the ruins of a k'iche' temple.
