    SoHo and Lan Kwai Fong

    December 4, 2016 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Spent the whole morning walking around in SoHo (South of Hollywood Road (no joke :-) and Lan Kwai Fong quarter. The old quarters of Hongkong; even if developed and modernized over the last decades; I feel and sense they preserved their original character. You discover small, narrow roads, busy life, tiny restaurants and bars, small businesses of all kind, art galleries ... the quarter is not posh at all - but very intimate and sometime queer. Had a nice lunch with a spectacular view at Stauntons - just have a look :-)Read more

    Commuting in Hongkong

    December 4, 2016 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Beside the busy Ferry traffic in Victoria Harbour, Hongkong features an extremely good and organized subway system (buying a ticket from A to B is, for a foreign visitor sooo easy and straightforward to do, VBZ could learn a lot here :-). There are also bus lines and a Trämli. Interesting to discover that the Trämli line was more or less the shoreline of HK Island in the early days - and today skyscrapers are seen all over to the north into V harbour (lots of land filled up here). And some pictures of THE escalator; connecting a long part of the upper parts of HK Island (Soho) to the financial distrinct (in the morning it goes downtown; in the eveving it goes uptown -> just to help and adjust the flow of people going to and coming back from work. Well, we learned recently that Bern Hauptbahnhof introduced a similar system (yes, on
a very smaller scale, but what a WOW for cowland).

    Sham Shui Po Market

    December 3, 2016 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

If you ever have visited our "famous" northern italian mercati and think they are exciting - forget about them; they are nothing compared to an asian market - like this one ... (I know what I am talking about - my mother was born and raised in Baveno (near Stresa) and I know by heart all the markets around that area .. :-) Here it is different, interesting, fascinating, you feel the scent of Asia.Read more

    Helicopter flight over Hongkong
The Peninsula - apparently the oldest and one of the renowned Hotel in Hongkong (and for sure the most expensive one - unfortunately I could not afford a room there :-) has on the top of its two hotel towers (new build some years ago - see old picture and today's one) the helipad for sightseeing flights. The helicopter company is owned by the Pensinsula Group of Hotels. The top floor and "departure area" is called the China Clipper Lounge. These Asia Clippers, as they were called, were in the early years of the last century the big seaplanes connecting the USA with Asia.Read more

Nope, was there some "many" years ago and liked it; checked out it's situation today and ... it developed to be now the world's biggest players paradise - looks like Las Vegas. In my opinion - not worth to go there - rather invest the time to discover and enjoy some Hongkong treasures.

    Stanley

    December 2, 2016 in Hong Kong ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Visited Stanley on a recommendation - I was told it should be a nice market. Big disappointment - lots of stores and more a touristical attraction than a market. Well, will visit tomorrow some real markets in Kowloon. Took the bus down to Stanley (with all the stops and traffic jams it took an eternity - wanted to be smart and took a taxi back to Central - took also an eternity ... Friday evening traffic jam - oh boy, I spent quite some time in buses and cars today. Last picture is the best - I had to leave the place when i saw it ....Read more

    Hongkong December 2016

    December 1, 2016 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Some first impressions - night and day - bustling city mingling western and eastern culture. Did the "peak" by cablecar and walked around the top on Lugard Road, a nice walk far away from town. In the evening had an excellent dinner with friends at "Wooloomooloo" restaurant (also the name of a quarter in Sydney - situated south of Harbour bridge) with a stunning and spectacular view of Victoria Harbour including Laser show.Read more
