    Tiahuanacu

    January 6, 2019 in Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Pre Incan site, possibly going back as far as 1500 BC, and UNESCO world Heritage site. This is a major administrative and religious center. First is the only complete stele. Most had at least the heads removed by the Spanish in the name of evangelization. Then a pic of some of the stonework found here. Next is the partially excavated Pyramid of Akapana. The pyramid is 7 levels tall as 7 is a sacred number in the Tiahuanacu cult. The next pic looks into the main temple through the main gate with the Estela Ponce visible. Next is the altar in the main temple. It is adobe and rebuilt each year for festivals. For you biblical types, take a good look: this altar seems to meet the design specs given to Moses for the Tabernacle. The last is an artist's redition of what the site might have looked like. You'll need to blow it up to really see it as this is a very large archaeological dig.Read more
