    Last day and flight home

    Just a quick cross over the Aqueduct and packed up the car.

    Dropped off at Liverpool airport and killed a few hours there. I am always sad to be leaving a holiday, but to my surprise when I landed back home, there to greet me at the airport were my two little nieces, best girls on the planet and loves of my life ♥️ if I continue to come home to them I think coming home is going to be worth it from now on!Read more

    Day 4 and our slow return home

    Last actual day on the barge, need to get back to Pontcysylte Aqueduct, will need to queue up for our turn and return the barge in top condition by 9:0 am.

    This is a particularly memorable day as I spontaneously booked my ticket (2nd row) to the Dara O'Brien comedy show in Malta!!!

    Just before we got to our mooring spot I got to raise and lower a bridge for the first time, it's the little things that make me smile :)

    Barge day 3 and the never ending rain

    Made our way back to Frankston Locks, timing is is key for those locks ;) we made friends with the lock keeper, who's father was stationed in Malta during the war. I intend to spend at least one season of my life time being a lock keeper.

    We rerouted to Ellesmere were we spontaneously met up with our Welsh family once again, I got introduced to Hunters Chicken .... Yum! New pub favourite 😍    Read more

    Barge Day 2 and the many locks

    Early starts are the norm on this part of trip, the moving is slow and we have places
    (and special locks) to get through. We lucked out and booked a passage through Frankston Locks, these are special locks that form part of a special nature area and the locks only allow a select number of barges to go through every day and with very specific times. There are 3 sets of locks to go through all very well timed and with lots of cooperation and expert steering, I obviously did not steer, like a good sailor I assisted with the locks. It really is such a fun trip.

    We stopped for the night at Navigation Inn, had another great dinner and were met by our cousin who spent the night after dinner.    Read more

    Day4

    Bell Tower and Barge Day 1

     May 6, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

    Early starts while on holiday should not be allowed, but alas early start it was; lots of packing and loading the car then set off for one last meet up with the Welsh clan.

    We met in front of St. Giles church and started the tour of the bell tower. 151 steps up a winding narrow flight of stairs at 10 am is a lot more of a work out than first expected but the views were worth it.

    Once back on lower ground we made our way to Norton to get our barge, since it was late afternoon we didn't have far to go, although, in barge world far is not exactly far, you could actually walk the distance just as fast, but that's the joy of barge holidays.

    We crossed Pontcysylte Aqueduct and a few bridges and tunnels including 2 that were 191 yards and 459 yards each! We stopped at lions Quay for dinner. Back on the barge we had a few gins and some family chatter down memory lane.    Read more

    Walk along the Roman walls

    Walked along the east route along the Roman walls, we were lucky with the weather, sunshine and clear skies.

    We went to Holt for a delicious carvery dinner at the Nags Head and caught up with the Welsh clan.

    Wedding Bells

    Day started with a good and proper breakfast, because when in Wales do as the Welsh do!

    Relaxed and explored the hotel all morning in preparation for the wedding celebration, and a good thing too as this wedding went on till the early hours of the morning and I made sure to dance every minute of it!

    What I love about family weddings is getting to catch up with family you haven't seen in a while, this was even more so as we got to meet up with family who live overseas so we hardly get to meet at all, that being said, this particular family are probably some of my absolute all time favourite people, would not have missed this day for the world!     Getting there

    Got collected at 4:15 am, yes you read that right! 4:15 am .... the things we we do for travels.

    It being stupid o'clock, traffic was a breeze and the airport were fairly empty, we sped through security and settled in for the long trip to Wrexham. Our flight to Leeds was on time and uneventful, l as per usual I slept most of the way, the insomniac who sleeps like a baby on planes and trains with ease may I add... there is some irony in there somewhere.

    From the airport, we got a taxi to Leeds train station, then a train to Manchester where we changed train and headed to Chester and one last train change to get to Wrexham, (I did say we go to lengths for our travels).

    Once in Wrexham we walked around, it is a very pretty place and I could happily spend a couple of days here exploring, if we had the time, after quick bite to eat at the Crafty Dragon (don't ask) we made our way to the Hotel

    At the hotel:

    Catching up with everyone was great fun, the excitement for tomorrow's wedding can be felt by all and I don't think we have ever all been together at the same time before, at least not anytime that I could have been old enough to really remember.

    We had a lovely dinner, drank lots of gin and did NOT manage to have an early night ahead of tomorrow's wedding! Day one down let the holiday commence :)    Read more
