Next stop today was the Stedelijk Museum, which is the modern art museum in Amsterdam.

There was a temporary exhibit here for Miriam Cahn. For those who may not be aware of her, Miriam is a Swiss artist. The first photo here is from her exhibit but I didn’t take any other photos in there because the works feature sexual violence and other things that didn’t really feel appropriate to take pictures of. Miriam’s work deals with heavy themes and particularly looks at war crimes.

Modern art is really interesting because it often requires a lot of reflection on history. Some of the works deal with colonisation and its effects on culture and identity for people of colour. Also in here were some cool feminist pieces, pieces that deal with religiosity, and pieces critical of greed.

Many people don’t like modern art. Of course these things are matters of taste and preference but if you allow yourself the time to really deal with what the art is saying, I think you can garner a lot more respect for form.
