    North of Huaraz

    September 17, 2017 in Peru ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today we travelled North of Huaraz to some interesting and picturesque townships, a buried city and one of the most beautiful lagoons I've ever seen.

The trip started early in the morning with a quick breakfast, then started our trip North along the Santa River. Our first stop was the town of Carhuaz, which contrasting with the coldness of Huaraz, had plenty of sun so we took advantage of this and had some ice creams.

From Carhuaz we continued along the highway to the buried city of Yungay, here we learned that in 1970 a strong earthquake triggered a massive avalanche that ended with life of over 20,000 people in a matter of seconds, the old city is buried under more that 3 metres of mud.

After Yungay, we started an hour and half climb on a dirty road to the Llanganuco lagoon. The lagoon has a beautiful turquoise colour and has a relaxing environment. We stayed for nearly an hour before returning down to lower grounds.

Our final stopped was the town of Caraz, where we had a delicious lunch with trouts.
