Don't forget to cap your razor

    May 24, 2017 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

    Anddddddd we're off!!

Take off from Montreal to Halifax 🛫

    Pretty uneventful flight.

Yes, mom & dad, we safely landed in Nova Scotia.

Now to get some dinner before the red eye.

  • Day 2

    Me, lucky? Who knew.

    May 25, 2017 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We landed in Halifax & got off on the tarmac since it's such a small airport.

Oh! I forgot to add in my last post that when we took off in montreal, I realized that it was my first time actually at the window seat while flying out east of Canada.... the view of Montreal from my window was absolutely stunning.

    So back to current time:

We grabbed some food at Legends Nova Scotia (literally the only thing that was open)..... and possibly some beer to properly kick off the next 3 weeks.

As we boarded the plane, we were told that it's a full flight. Turns out that the seat in between me and this super kind lady is EMPTY. Every other seat is taken. IM FINALLY THE LUCKY ONE.... But actually I'm not sure anymore. It was obviously too good to be true. She told me that since I'm sitting beside her I have the most important job..... to wake her up if she's snoring..... then she went on to tell me ALL about her sleep apnea. Oh, she also has this wicked smokers cough (please send help).

Fast forward to 2 hours into the flight. I'm watching sex in the city trying to get comfortable. I put my feet up on the the middle seat and she told me that I could stretch out my legs even if it touched her... after I kindly declined she grabbed my legs and forced them. I can officially say that this is the strangest experience I've ever had on a plane so far in my life. Ps. I think shes going to cough up a lung soon... oh yeah, she also told me all about her diabetes.

We're about 45 minutes out now. It's finally starting to sink in that we're here..... in Scotland, the motherland.

    What time is it?

    May 25, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This morning (which seems like an eternity ago) we landed in Glasgow. We decided to grab an uber to get to our airbnb since we were already exhausted. Our airbnb host gladly let us in early so we could drop our bags off & go tour the city until check in.

Our hosts Imogen & George are so kind. They gave us some ideas of what we needed to see before heading out. We walked along the canal for about an hour and along the way passing the BBC Scotland and this giant science center. We continued on to the riverside museum (entrance was free 🎉) where we look around but most importantly sat down. The jet lag was really starting to kick in at this point. Our hosts told us to go to the west end to see some cool stuff but we decided to walk another HOUR AND A HALF to city centre. Yes okay i agree 2 and a half hours of walking isn't THAT bad but holy crap we were tired. Once we got to city center we were in desperate need for some real Scottish food.... MCDOS 😂

After somewhat recharging, we walked around downtown a little bit and obviously walking up "The Style Mile"... no mom I didn't buy anything. We got to the top which I have to mention was uphill (I feel like I'm making excuses to be so tired at 12:30 in the afternoon ... as if jet lag wasn't a good enough one). At the top was Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall where there were tons of people sitting on the steps listening to a live musician singing Ed Sheeran.

We continued to George Park Sqaure. It was absolutely beautiful. There was a statue of Walter Scott (a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet) where people had put dozens and dozens of flowers and notes down for the shooting that happened in Manchester the other night.

We sat down on some grass in the shade where it was evident that we needed to get some sleep. We hit up the grocery store to grab some food for the next couple of days before taking the subway back to our airbnb. Now if you thought the Montreal metro was bad.... oh my my. Even the decor in this place was awful.

Fast forward 4 hours & I just woke up from the best nap of maybe all time.

No set plans for tonight but don't worry, you know I'll keep you updated 😉

    21,180 steps later

    May 26, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Last night we ended up just staying in, making pesto (which was pretty nasty) and going back to bed so we could make the best of today.... and that we did.

Woke up and made the breakfasted champions: oatmeal, yogurt and tea.

We caught the metro into the west end. We decided to start with the University of Glasgow aka Hogwarts. Little did I know that Hogwarts was based off of U of Glasgow .... or maybe U of Glasgow was based on Hogwarts 🤔😉 Consider transferring there until I googled the tuition price for nursing school.... a whopping 13000£ a year... that dream was crushed fairly quickly.

We then walked to Kelvingrove Park where we looked around a little bit.

We went to the botanical gardens where we sat and ate our homemade peanut butter and banana sandwiches for lunch (for those who don't know, thats basically all we ate on my last euro trip.. I had to bring them back). We sat on the grass with all the other Scots enjoying the beautiful 28 degree weather. We walked around the greenhouses enjoying the LOVELY smells of the flowers until we decided to go find the Glasgow cathedral.. we initially found a church that we thought was it but turns out we were on the wrong side of the city ... oops

Back on the subway (SQUEAKY AF).

We got off & guess what walked some more.

Found the Glasgow Cathedral and let me tell you... it was worth the walk. Simply stunning. We went inside and lit a candle for Auntie Karen & sat in the pews watching a woman & her ring bearer & flower girl practice for their wedding.

Leaving the cathedral we found the Glasgow Necropolis. The view from the top was a panorama of the city... pictures will never do it justice.

Back to city centre to see "the lighthouse" which is a Centre for Design and Architecture and designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In the Mackintosh tower there was helical staircase that lead to the uninterrupted view of the Glasgow skyline. (So many nice pictures already)

We walked around some more (obviously) until we stumbled upon this cute Mexican restaurant that we ate dinner at. I had a Long Island ice tea and kaylee had a Miami vice.. perfect after walking in the hot sun all day. We asked the waitress if it's normally this hot out, she responded by saying "no this is mental" hahah she also told us to tell people back home that "Scotland is warm and sunny... no one will believe you" (apparently the rest of the week, Scotlands weather will be back... raining and cloudy wohooo)

After dinner, we went back to the west end to get some icecream (YAYYYYY). As we're sitting there, I logged on to see if my teachers had posted my final grade yet..... turns out that I OFFICIALLY passed nursing (I'll also be starting as a nurse the day after I get back from Europe... the jetlag hurts already)

We got back to the airbnb now where we showered and started packing for our 3 day trip up to the isle of skye.

Look out for more pictures & more blog posts coming your way soon enough ☺️

  • Day 4

    Canadians in shorts

    May 27, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We check out of our Airbnb this morning & our hosts were amazing. Really went out of their way for us.

We went to our meeting spot to start our 3 day isle of skye tour. With a full bus; 3 ppl for Philippines, 2 from china, 3 from India, 1 from US, 1 from Sweden & 1 from Denmark... and of course 2 from the best country in the world CANADA.

As we start moving, the Swedish lady asks me to switch seats cause she gets car sick (ps. I had the best spot on the bus) then the Indian people had a kid who wouldn't stop crying & they were always late.. it just wasnt starting off well hahaha.

Anyways, here are a few facts & what we saw on our first day of the tour:

City chambers has the largest marble staircase in Europe and also has the same marble as the Vatican

    Glasgow 600,000 population

Queen Elizabeth Hospital with helicopter pad is the largest in the EU

60% of the whiskey industry in Scotland is owned by the Japanese

Paisley is largest town in Scotland- 50,000
City of Inverness (capital of the highlands has a population of 45,000)

The west highland way is a 96 miles hike- takes between 5-10 days from the city of argyll to the city of Fort Williams

When the bottle whisky, they lose about 20% of by vaporization. That's what they call angel air & it turns the trunks of the trees near the whisky plant black & if you walk by them you can actually smell the whisky coming off the trees. The trees are black because they grow a type of fungus due to the whiskey.

Scotland has these "like" mosquitos called medges but apparently are 100 times worse ... there's even a song about them that our driver played for us. "They bite like pirañas, they'll drive you bananas"

First stop- The city of Luss, we stopped to take some pictures by the water & pet some dogs.

We stopped at Drovers inn for lunch: a pub built in 1705, nothing has changed on the inside or out except the food a little bit. It is called drovers in because people used to drive their cattle through there back in the days. "Do you know why it's called a kilt? cause the last person that called it a skirt got kilt"

Brocken long a song played during the Second World War while drinking whiskey (movie whisky galore)

We passed by the railway bridge that was used in the scene is Harry Potter when the dementors were chasing the train.

    Lochs are lakes
Lochans are smaller body's of water
    Glenn is a valley
Ivern is a city at the end of a loch

    We then stopped at Glencoe
In 1691 there was the massacre in Glencoe. There was the MacDonald Clan that were sent to Iveranne to pledge allegiance but ended up in Fort Williams by accident then were sent south to the city of Iveranne but they were too late. They went back to glencoe where the Campbell's Clan were sent to kill all the MacDonalds under the age of 17 by King William. They came and stayed with them for 12 nights and on the 12th night they killed 38 ppl from the MacDonald Clan. The rest of them fled but didn't survive because of the harsh weather conditions.

Glencoe has 3 towering peaks which began 470 million years ago when the ancient continents of Laurentia and Avalonia collided. Over a period of 5 million years, at least 8 massive volcanic euruptions lifted the rocks of the continents thousand meters above sea level. These peaks are now called the three sisters; hope faith and charity.

"What do you call a deer with no eye? No eye-dear. What do you call a deer with no eyes or legs? Still no eye-dear"

We arrived in Portree where we will be staying the next two night in the cutest little hostel. Every wall has a different color & the shower floor is hot pink & sparkly (now that's my kind of shower)

We went out for dinner & had fish & chips in the Harbor. This is such a cute little town (mom you would love it here!!)

We are just hanging out at the hostel & getting ready for the big day tomorrow: ISLE OF SKYE

  • Day 5

    Sheep Shipper

    May 28, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

So day 2 of our skye trip & I'm seriously at a loss for words.

We met the group at 9 am after making breakfast at our hostel. The Indian family was 20 Minutes late... again.

Our first stop was Glen Ferry. This was incredible. It looked like something right out of Lord of the Rings. It had small rolling hills that were greener than the best grass I've ever seen.

Our tour guide, Andrew told us that 60% of the ppl in Skye speak Gaelic. There are golden eagles on Skye & will eat the baby lambs :/. Black faced sheep are the most populated in Scotland. There are more sheep then there are people.

We got to drive by and saw where Skye meets the Atlantic Ocean ( HI CANADA!!)

Quirang, which was a stop along the way, was out of this world. The scenery here is spectacular. (See pictures)

Old man of storr: legend says that there were 2 giants climbing the mountain and they saw something they shouldn't have and they were turned to stone. There's only one left standing today.

Quiring and Old man of Storr are both in Harry Styles music video for "change of the times". Our bus drivers brother and sister in law were paid to let harry land on their property by helicopter... they were also paid 10,000 pounds (20,000 Canadian) to keep quiet about him coming.

After coming back from lunch we went to the Dunvegan castle, where he gave us an option.. to either pay 10£ to go in or to go for a walk along the beach. Since it was such a beautiful day out today (and we're going to a castle tomorrow), we decided to choose the walk and we were definitely not disappointed. I just have no words left. Pictures can't even do it justice.

After the castle, he dropped some of us off at Cullin mountain to go see the ferry pools. This was probably one of my favourite places so far. There was 3 GIANT mountains and waterfalls right through the middle of them. We can go dunk our feet in the crystal clear water (super cold) and hike for about 2 hours.

We missed our dinner reservation but they managed to squeeze us in a bit later. We grabbed a local beer from the bar and waited to be seated. I had macaroni and cheese with garlic bread and salad. SOOOOO good. (Took some to go to eat for lunch tomorrow)

We are now back at the hostel, showered & ready to sleep (we both didn't sleep much last night)

Tomorrow is our last day of the tour (thank god I'll never have to see some of these people ever again 🙃)

Just a side mark, if you're reading this and you ever want to travel Scotland, use timerberbush tours and ask for the tour guide Andrew. He is sooo kind & is an awesome driver on the single high speed roads!!

  • Day 7

    Can I pet your dog?

    May 30, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

So at 9am, back on the bus to go to the east highlands and to Edinburgh.

First stop: The sligachan river has a legend that says if you dunk your head In the river for 7 seconds you'll have eternal youth (I'm looking about 15 years old right now)

Gruska are soldiers from Nepal. One was staying at a hotel and a man bet him that he couldn't get up a mountain and back down in less than an hour. He ended up doing it.... bare foot. Now there's a race every year & the fastest time today is 44 minutes. (This mountain is huge okay? I can't even comprehend how fast they must be going)

The Eilean Donan Castle started being built in the early 13th century as a defensive measure against the Vikings where the 3 lochs meet (long, alsh, Duich). The name traces back to a colony of otters that once lived here. The King of Otters had it seems, chosen this place as his residence, and was easily recognizable to all by his coat of pure silver and white. Eventually when he passed, his robe was buried beneath the foundation of the castle. In recognition of this event it is from the Gaelic for otter (cu-Donn) that the island is said to take its name. There have been many famous movies shot at this castle James Bond 007 days of bond, Loch Ness, highlander, Made of Honor (and many more)

Lt colonel John McCrae was a famous Canadian soldier, physician and poet. He died on Jan 28th 1918 in Boulogne France. He left them his legacy to the world renowned poem, in Flanders field.

Loch Ness: it is so big you can fit the world population three times inside. 71 km long, 702 deep. Also the same Loch where Nessie the Loch Ness Monster has been spotted. The first sighting was in 880 and over 1000 sightings have been seen since then. Scientist believe that there could have been eggs left there before the last Ice age & thawed. They think it could be a dipladocous. The Loch Ness is an average temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. This dinosaur is warm blooded therefore would not be able to survive in extreme cold. The last sighting was 30 years ago.... until today when I swam with Nessie (I stuck my hand in the water.... close enough)

John Cobb was a boat racer. He was racing on Loch Ness where the water was said to be flat and still. Out of now where, I huge splash that happened and made John Cobbs boat crash and he actually died.

Meaning of whiskey: the word is actually "Uisge Beatha" in Scottish Gaelic which means "water of life"

Pattack falls nature trail in Cairngorms national park where we stopped for a quick look at a beautiful waterfall.

We stopped in Pitlochry where salmon are known for swimming up stream on River Tay. Also on this river, a woman caught the largest salmon in the world. I tried some whisky that was called sweet dream & it was the BEST whisky I've ever tasted.

We arrived in Edinburgh around 7:30pm... & left the tour group!!! Finally!! But not without saying goodbye to Andrew with some cuddles (that's what they call hugs haha) We walked around central station, trying to see if there was somewhere where we'd be able to store our bags for the day. It was 12£ for 12 hours (what a rip off).

So we walked towards our flat & it's about a 15 minute walk from the centre of town and let me tell you..... it is BEAUTIFUL (I'm also writing this from my heated bed at the moment) We met our Airbnb host and she is the sweetest little scot ever. (she is also going to let us keep our bags here until our flight tomorrow night)

We headed out to go find some food & see some of the city since we only have tomorrow to see everything. I'm getting pretty good at this whole jwalking thing here in the UK (trick is to always look right first)

We're now back at the flat, showered and cozy as ever. Ready for our big day tomorrow of lots of walking & traveling!!

  • Day 7

    4 seasons 1 day

    May 30, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

So we were up and at em this morning since we only had a couple hours to explore Edinburgh.

We walked over to old town (the city is split up into 3 sections, old town, new town and the west end). Our first thing on the check list was the Edinburgh Castle. The thing was freakin huge.

We walked down the Royal Mile aka tourist central and went into all the little stores. Whenever I travel, I always get a patch from the country and also a mini bottle of whatever the country's specialty is (this time its whisky)

We walked up to Cilton Hill where we got an amazing view of the city. We saw Arthur's seat but we didn't have time to hike it with everything else we wanted to do. The parks highest point is Arthurs Seat, an ancient volcano, and sits 251m above sea level; it is also the site of a large and well preserved fort.  This is one of four hill forts dating from around 2000 years ago.  With its diverse range of flora and geology it is also site of Special Scientific Interest.(gives us a reason to go back)

So we walked around new town for a bit going into some European shops. Before grabbing dinner, we had to find somewhere that kaylee could try haggis for relatively cheap because for those who don't know; haggis is sheep liver, lungs, stomach and other nasty stuff I can't remember. Kaylee said it takes like meat loaf but I can't seem to see how haha

We are at an old Scottish pub for dinner with a Scottish brewed beer. We sat by the window & people watched as ate. Well,, I didn't really eat. I ordered a veggie lasagna and the tofu was gross and the noodled weren't cooked. I ended up taking it to go and giving it to a homeless person on the street. It wasn't great but it's still food, right?

We went back to the flat to grab our bags and caught the bus from city centre to the airport.

When we got through security, we decided to find out how to get to our Airbnb from the airport. Turns out Oslo is an hour train ride from the airport and the last train leaves 20 Minutes after we land. We checked how much an uber would be & it's about 100$ Canadian to get us there.

Our flight was delayed about 20 minutes but we're supposed to make up for it in the air. if we don't make our train, we're spending the night at the airport cause we can't afford that uber 😂 good news though, we're sitting at the front of the plane... bad news? Our bags are about 6 rows behind us.

We're 15 minutes out from landing and we're on time...
please keep your fingers crossed for us. Ps. Flying over Norway at night is beautiful.

Update: we made the train (super high tech). We arrived at the Airbnb easily. Let me tell you.... this city is spotless clean, gorgeous flowers everywhere & our apartment has all automatic doors, the fridge, microwave and dishwasher are all hidden in cupboards. Most importantly the beds are comfy.

We're off to bed & up early to get some laundry done before we head out to explore the (already) beautiful oslo

    Judgemental eyes

    May 31, 2017 in Norway ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Our plan didn't go as we thought this morning. We did get up at 7 to put on a load of laundry. We both went into the bathroom to try to figure out the machine... because it was in Norwegian. Long story short, we ended up putting our clothes in the drying with laundry detergent 😂 we quickly realized and had to put everything into the washer except half the clothes didn't fit (small then the dryer). Kaylee scooped our all the laundry detergent as fast as possible (our host was waking up) We successfully got 2 loads of laundry done expect we put the clothes in the drying & it took a solid hour just to dry bras and underwear. We hung some clothes up in the room and threw everything in the dryer and left (in hopes that when we came back it would be dry

We went out and visited the opera house which was made out complete marble on the outside and the inside was just as spectacular. We went to the top of the building to get a good view of the city.

We then went into Oslo central station to try to find where we're going tomorrow and ended up at the visitors centre. We grabbed a map and quickly look at what we wanted to see. We walked the main road and saw parliament, city hall and the royal palace. We also went into the Nobel Peace Prize Centre.

It started to down poor so we wanted to get to the mall or somewhere where we could get food. I took out my Canadian poncho and rocked it with my sunglasses. Ive never seen so many people stare because of a poncho. A girls gotta do what she's gotta do to stay dry.

We walked by Burger King & we decided to check the prices for fun cause we had no idea what it was going go be like.... I was floored. It was almost 15$ for JUST a hamburger. We then went into the grocery store where i soon found out that i will be starving myself until we get to Germany. The prices are almost triple what we pay at home.

We got a oven pizza and brought it back to our place to make. We ended up having dinner with our Airbnb host who is a huge fan of Leonard Cohen. We talking for a good 45 minutes until I crawled into bed. This is where I plan on staying for the rest of the night.

We also face timed with momma who I miss so much. It was nice to talk to her ❤️❤️

  • Day 9

Why is it snowing in June?

    June 1, 2017 in Norway ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Woke up this morning in Oslo, ate some breakfast before we went to go catch our train.

Considering everything is in Norwegian, it was pretty easy to navigate around the city and to our train.

The train was absolutely GORGEOUS. tons of leg room and a whole 4 seater to ourselves. So off we went to Mydral (our transfer to the Flam Rail). The first 10 minutes kaylee was already asleep. 20 Minutes into the train ride the scenery was beautiful. It looked kinda like canada with the big mountains and pine trees... and then this is what gets interesting... then all of a sudden it turned into full blown Canadian winter. The snow was at least 7 feet deep, the rivers were covered in ice sheets and we dropped about 12 degrees. Although it was beautiful (& I can say I've seen Norway in winter), I panicked a little bit. All we have are leggings, running shoes, a sweater and a wind breaker in terms of "warm" clothes. When we stepped out at Mydral, it was 6 degrees and windy. Not Canadian cold but still cold enough to not stand out side to wait for the train.

The flam rail pulled up and i got so excited. I've been waiting for this for my whole trip. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. There are just no words or pictures that can make any of it seem as it is. It's one of those things that you need to see for yourself.

Arriving in Flam, we checked into our hostel. It is in an old farm house with crooked floors and squeaky floors. Its cute and clean and that's all that really matters (cant be worse than the one in Mykonos or Barcelona last year). We quickly dropped off our stuff and went for a hike.

This hike was to a huge waterfall overlooking the small city of flam. So as we got closer, we were like meh not so bad, it says it's supposed to take about 1.5-2 hours to do the hike. Then we started hiking...... STEEP UP HILL the WHOLE way. My thighs were on complete fire. My favourite part about this hike was not the end view but all the sheep we met along the way. They were so friendly (but kinda scary). They walked right up to me and were sniffing my legs.

We managed to get to the top (probably one of the hardest hikes I've ever done). & the view wasn't even that great. 😂 We stopped by the waterfall to eat an apple before heading down. I went a little closer to sit on a little hill and as I was climbing up, I smashed my head on the tree branch & broke my sunglasses. The people behind me had a good laugh.

When we were walking down, we saw this look out that people were standing on and taking pictures. We walked out on to it and damn that was a nice view (about half way up the mountain -.-) We took some pictures and we were on our way.

We went to the train station where they have 4 restaurants and one store (this town is super tiny ahah) We are some fish and chips from a cafe that came with a salad and it cost us 25$ Canadian. At least it was freakin delicious. We sat out right on the fjord to eat dinner.

I'm so in love with this place. I can see myself coming back to Norway one day .... maybe as a nurse 😉
