    9. joulukuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We had booked into the morning performance of the dance show, so we all arrived in Redcliffe nice and early to enable the girls to get ready for the show.
We wandered down to the sea front to pass some time prior to settling down in our seats at the Redcliffe theatre.
What followed was most impressive - two and a half hours of dance to the theme of "Christmas Wonderland" based upon The Polar Express.
There was a cast of 150, all from the 5th Element dance School, and the ages of the performers ranged from 18 months (dancing polar bear) to 22 years. The costumes were very colourful throughout.
Sammy and Sophie impressed us, once again, with their efforts.
After the morning performance we left the girls to get ready for their next performance in the afternoon, and we returned to Eatons Hill to prepare ourselves for a week long camping trip with the family to Stradbroke Island.

    8. joulukuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

The last day of our road trip saw us complete the drive north to Brisbane. 200km all on the Pacific Highway passing through the Gold Coast.
We arrived in time to spend a little time in the pool with Sophie and Samantha before they needed to go off for a dress rehearsal of their dance show.
They were scheduled for 7 hours dancing at the theatre in Redcliffe where the performance was to take place tomorrow.
Thereafter we enjoyed the company of Summer, Jamie and Renee at home by the pool. We drank our Friday fizz to accompany a wonderful bbq cooked by Jamie.

We took a morning walk along the trail through the woods behind the beach, then walked along the beach to the river mouth. There were a number of people already enjoying themselves in the surf. A little bit further there was a pod of about 20 dolphins swimming up the bay.
We enjoyed a splendid ice cream sundae in the village before taking ourselves off to the beach.

Another baking hot day was on the cards so we got up early to strike the tent before the sun rose too high, and made our way north once again.
Evans Head is tucked in between two places we had visited previously.
By mid afternoon we were all set up, once again so we made our way to the beach to dive into he surf. There was a nice off shore breeze running so the surf was quite strong.

Today we drove off site to visit Arakoon en route to a place called South West Rocks. At Arakoon we walked the Monument Hill trail, so called as it features a monument to Germans interned during World War 1, 2 of whom died in the local Trial Bay prison. This walk led onto the Bridle Path
and then ono the Powder Store trail. a small black snake slithered across Karen's path along the way. At the end of the walk we visited the Trial Bay cafe/restaurant but were disappointed to be told that only items on the lunch menu could be purchased. Karen was looking forward to a cool cider - but alcohol not allowed without food. Alan fancied a piece of hummingbird cake with a coffee, but cake was not allowed during lunchtime!! Seemed stupid rules to us - but rules are rules!!!
In the afternoon we drove the short distance to South West Rocks, where we found Horseshoe Bay (a spot that had been recommended by people we had met on another trip to Oz) and another delightful beach. Again we were in and out of the sea in an effort to cool off.
On our drive back to base we encountered a couple of dingoes, our first ever in Australia. They were very timid and scuttled off into the bush as we stopped the car to have a closer look.

    4. joulukuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We awoke to a hot and sunny day. In the morning we walked from our campsite over the Creek to find the start of the Korogoro walking track. The track was easy to find and took us around the headland, once again with stunning views. At times the path became quite hairy, with steep uphill stretches across small rock faces. Once we reached the viewing point at the tip of the headland the return journey was much easier and less daunting. After lunch we took our books to the beach at the campsite - again crystal clear sea and white sandy beaches. We were in and out of the sea to cool off at regular intervals.Lue lisää

Another travelling day. We are getting a little closer to Brisbane.
We moved 200k north to Hat Head, where we intend to stay for 3 nights.
We stopped off at Kempsey to restock at Aldi, Coles, and the bottle shop.
The heavens opened whilst we were shopping and the sky cleared overhead as we left the bottle shop.
We travelled due east to Hat Head, and we could see that the downpour was hanging over the area we were about to get to.
As we neared, the sky cleared, and we were able to set up once again in the dry.
According to reception at the camperground, it had been a fierce storm. People soon had equipment out drying off in the sun.
We went for a stroll around the site to see the beach and fell into the bowling club for a beer and cider reviver, much needed due to high temperatures.

    2. joulukuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We had a look further up the coast on another fine day, our last day in this area before moving north once more.
We had been told that the tallest tree in NSW was nearby, so we took a detour to have a look. At 80m high, it is quite impressive, but too crammed into the bush to photograph, especially against a bright sky.
We followed that with a trip to see the lighthouse at Sugarloaf Point, another sharp walk up a steep hill in baking temperatures.
Our afternoon was spent on the beach beneath the cliffs.

    1. joulukuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We used the ferry to cross to the seaward side of the lakes and drove a short way along the road to The Mungo Bush campsites. From here, we walked the Mungo Bush Trail to where the lake discharges via a river to the next lake in the chain. Tomboi, on the other side of the river, is home to fishermans huts. The fishermen were after prawns.
After completing the walk we drove along the headland further, having our lunch at a lookout onto the sea. In the distance we saw a pod of dolphins, but they stayed out at sea and soon disappeared. We stopped off once again to walk across the sand dunes to have a look at Dark Point, where an ancient aborigonal midden is being preserved. A very hot walk across white sand.
The Tea Gardens Ice Cream Shack did us proud once again, prior to us spending further time on Jimmy's Beach.

    30. marraskuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

There was a serious downpour overnight, which meant that the lakes were full and the interconnecting rivers running fast. This prevented the ferry at Bombah Point from running the next morning, so we drove to Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest using the inland route.
At Hawks Nest, we walked the bush trail to Yacaaba Head, which lies at the entry to Port Stevens. The view of the coast line was once again pretty spectacular. At the head, we persuaded ourselves that the scramble to the summit would provide more impressive views of the harbour, so we did that too.
The walk took in the beach, where at the southern end the sea was green with seaweed in the surf. A very large goanna was feeding on the insects prior to scurrying across our path to the bush. We met other goannas on our walk through the woods.
The weather was hot and humid. We treated ourselves at the Ice Cream Shack at Tea Gardens prior to spending some time on the adjacent Jimmy's Beach.
