    Stop 1: El Valle

    September 17, 2022 in Panama ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Wow! I am at a loss how to sum up the last three weeks in just one post. What an incredible start to my first solo adventure. My time in El Valle de Anton was filled with sunrise hikes, new friendships, bad attempts at Spanish, and so many new experiences (including learning to cook patacones and how to salsa dance). So grateful for the people I met and the experiences I had in this gorgeous mountain town, thanks for making it so hard to leave.Read more

    Weekend Trip to Boquete

    September 26, 2022 in Panama ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

This weekend I took a weekend trip to Boquete, where I joined someone I had met at the previous hostel I stayed at. Our first stop was a coffee tour/tasting, where we learned about the coffee industry, the coffee making process, and got some caffeine in our systems to keep us awake for our hike later that night. From Boquete you can access the tallest mountain in Panama (and an active volcano!), Volcán Barú. We decided to do this hike for sunrise, leaving at 12am. Roughly 11 hours of hiking later, we made it back to town where we enjoyed good food, a long nap, and a drink at the local brewery while listening to live music!Read more

    Boquete Pt. 2!

    October 7, 2022 in Panama ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Couldn't leave the area without making one more trip to Boquete. What can I say, I'm a big fan of any town known for coffee and chocolate. This time, I went rock climbing! These rocks were formed 600 years ago from a volcanic eruption, and climbers from all over travel to try out the routes. Had a great morning with my guide and some other locals who introduced me to the wall. I was also lucky enough to stay in Bambuda Castle. Despite the lack of pictures, this a beautiful hostel and the only castle in Central America!Read more

Stop 2: Lost and Found Hostel

    October 12, 2022 in Panama ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I spent the last three weeks volunteering at Lost and Found, a hostel in the middle of the jungle in Chiriqui, Panama. The first day that I arrived at the hostel, I almost stepped on the biggest snake I've ever seen - not the best introduction to the hostel. The remote location of this hostel is what makes it such a unique experience and ideal for spotting wildlife, like snakes. Each day I was there I saw something I had never seen before, including monkeys and glass butterflies (photos included!). Being so remote also came with a lot of challenges, like having to walk 40 minutes to the closest grocery store and getting really comfortable being around bugs. This experience reminded me to appreciate some of the things that I usually take for granted. Putting up with these inconveniences was well worth it for the ability to spend my time hanging out at swimming holes, visiting waterfalls, and going on adventures. Although I wouldn't have guessed it if you had asked me my first week there, I was really disappointed to say goodbye to this place and to the friendships I made here.Read more

    "Cacao Tour"

    October 30, 2022 in Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

I have been in Puerto Viejo for two out of four weeks now and I was planning on waiting until I left to give another update, but I felt that this weekend deserved its own post. I signed up for what we was described as a "full day cacao tour" with three other people that I met in my Spanish classes and some others that joined once we arrived. After a short walk around the small indigenous community, the tour began. We started off by tasting the cacao fruit, then learned about the roasting process. Afterwards, we ground the roasted cacao beans with a large stone and added honey and lemon to create our very own flavored chocolate! Once our chocolate was finished, we were able to try some of the other delicious flavors they make on site. Little did we know, the tour didn't end there. The cacao section of the tour was finished, to be followed by a jungle survival course that no one seemed to know we had signed up for. In the course, we learned about which plants could be used for medicine, fishing, and other lifesaving purposes. We also sampled one of the jungle's most readily available sources of protein - termites (find penguins won't let me post the video so I provided photo evidence of my reaction instead). But the tour still wasn't over! After the termite tasting session, we headed to a sweat lodge to participate in a traditional Bri Bri ceremony. During the ceremony, we each lost about 5 lbs of water weight, drank a mysterious unknown liquid, and attempted to strengthen our connection with the universe. Lastly, the group was served a delicious homecooked meal out of a leaf and we took a group photo to remember the day by.Read more

    Bocas Del Toro

    November 10, 2022 in Panama ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

This cluster of islands off of the coast of Panama is incredible! It was my first experience with the Caribbean and it went above and beyond all expectations. I spent my days exploring new beaches and got to see a parrot, jellyfish, lots of starfish, and my first sting ray. I was lucky to have visitors while I was there (one was a volunteer from my previous hostel, and another from the US). My only complaint is that I was only able to spend five days here in total.Read more
