    Kawa Ijen

    February 24, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

After having climbed Mount Bromo, we headed towards yet another highlight of Java, 7 hours drive away: Ijen volcano. The crater is full of sulfur and every day, dozens of sulfur miners climb up the very steep hill to the top of the volcano, then down the crater for another 800 metres. There, they collect between 80kg to 100kg and carry it all the way out of the crater, and down the mountain!
We set off around 1am to aim to get into the crater while it was still dark. Sulfur masks compulsory! There, we were also able to enjoy the blue fire, only visible at night, created by sulfur and gaz! No good photos though...
But when we climbed back up we were able to enjoy yet another beautiful sunrise, and a stunning view of both the crater and the blue lake, as well as the surrounding view!
