    Our Trip Starts

    June 23, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

    Finally our great adventure begins! We can’t wait to see all the great experiences ahead of us. After checking-in and dropping of our bags we realized that we were really close to boarding time and had to run through the big airport of Frankfurt to get to our gate on time. A little stress at the beginning of our trip, but it all turned out well.

    Endlich ist der große Tag da und wir begeben uns auf die große Reise durch die habe Welt. Nachdem uns am Check-In Schalter ein bisschen Stress gemacht wurde, gab es nur eine kurze Abschiedszeremonie und wir rannten Richtung Security und Gate. Am Ende: alles umsonst, da wir immer noch beim Boarding warten mussten.    Read more

    Day 2

    Sightseeing in Montreal

    June 24, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

    First day of our trip and first day in Montreal. We started walking towards the city from Avenue De Lorimier, the place we are staying. We had a wonderful sunny day exploring the city by foot and saw Basilica Notre Dame, the Old Port, the Old Town, Bell Center and sind other nice Spots of Montreal.
    At the end of the day we met some friends for dinner at a restaurant calls Pizzeria Elio, close to Little Italy. We had a wonderful time. Spontaneously on our way back to the apartment we stopped to watch a parade for the Saint John the Baptist Day (a local Quebec holiday).

    Erster Tag in Montreal. Auf dem Weg zu einem Supermarkt stellten wir fest, dass am Feiertag - dem Saint John Baptist Day - alle Geschäfte geschlossen waren. Morgens um halb neun mit jeder Menge Hunger und Jetlag wagten wir uns also den Weg downtown, wobei wir in einer Boulangerie endlich Croissants und Schokobaguettes fanden. So machten wir uns in Richtung alter Hafen und Notre-Dame auf. Wir erkundigten zu Fuß Montreal und waren begeistert. Absolut sonniges Wetter und durch die frühe Uhrzeit vor dem Touri-Ansturm. Danach schauten wir uns noch das Bell Center und einige andere Teile der Stadt an. Am Abend trafen wir dann Freunde zum Essen in einem italienischen Restaurant „Elio“. Ein toller Abend mit leckerem Essen.
    Auf dem Nachhauseweg stoppten wir spontan bei der Parade des Heiligen Feiertages und sahen bei schöner Musik einige tolle Kostüme. Ein super Start in unsere Reise.    Read more

    Day 4

    Montreal Mount-Royal

    Today we drove up to Mont-Royal with a friend from Montreal. He gave us a perfect insight into the history of the city and Mont-Royal itself. On top of the mountain you get an amazing view all over the city of Montreal.

    Heute sind wir mit einem Freund rauf zum Mont-Royal gefahren. Dort haben wir eine kleine Wanderung zur Aussichtsplattform gemacht. Von dort hatten wir einen super Überblick über die Stadt. Unser Freund hat uns sehr viel über die Geschichte der Stadt erzählt. Super interessante Einblicke von einem Einwohner.    Read more

    Day 5

    Ottawa Jail Hostel

    Our second stop is Ottawa. We’re staying at this perfect location close to all the important places of interest. In Ottawa there is no subways just buses and trains as public transportation. First night we had dinner at a Keg Manor little west of the city. Food and the setting were phenomenal!

    Unser zweiter Stopp ist Ottawa. Wir sind in einem Mega coolen Hostel untergekommen. Das Gebäude und die Zimmer waren früher ein altes Gefängnis. Uhhh 💀👻. Eine interessante Sache über Ottawa: hier gibt es nur Züge und Busse und keine U-Bahn - und das als Kanadas Hauptstadt. Heute Abend waren wir mit einer Freundin im Keg Manor essen - Oh mein Gott, das Essen war so lecker!    Read more

    Day 6

    National Holocaust Monument

    June 28, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    Today we walked to the National Holocaust Monument of Canada. An extremely intense experience getting in touch with that horrible time of the past. As Germans and as a person we must never forget the horrors of the past and learn from the mistakes made. I also learned that Canada (as one of many other countries) hasn’t been the nicest country to Jewish and other refugees fleeing from the Nazi Regime. I think we should always see every refugee as a person who needs help and never neglect them to come to our country to start a new life without fear, violence and oppression. Most of them just want a fresh start - we should never colour everyone with the same brush - there is no “the” refugees!
    We really like this monument and the meaning of it.

    Auf unserem Weg durch Ottawa zum National War Museum kamen wir am Nationalen Denkmal für den Holocaust vorbei. Ein sehr intensiver Ort, der uns schnell an die schreckliche Vergangenheit erinnerte und uns noch eins mehr lehrte aus den Fehlern zu lernen und so eine Zeit niemals wieder zuzulassen. Wir lernten auch, dass viele Länder (eines davon Kanada) starke Regulationen für Flüchtlinge des Nazi Regimes aus Europa und anderen Teilen der Welt hatte. Nicht einfach war es für diese nach Kanada zu kommen und Schutz zu suchen. Wir finden, wir sollten Flüchtlinge immer als die Menschen sehen, die sie sind. Menschen die Schutz brauchen vor Gewalt, Krieg, Unterdrückung und unzumutbaren Lebensumständen. Diese Menschen kommen zu uns, weil sie einen frischen Start brauchen und eine faire Chance auf ein Leben ohne Schrecken verdienen. Nicht alle sind über einen Kam zu scheren, aber die meisten wollen sich integrieren und das Beste aus dem Leben machen. Es gibt nicht „die“ Flüchtlinge.
    Das Monument hat uns eins mehr daran erinnert, wie wichtig es ist sozial zu sein und so zu leben.    Read more

    Day 6

    Sight Seeing Ottawa

    Sightseeing by foot again:
    Walked trough Ottawa toward Parliament Hill. On our way we crossed Rideau Canal and a war sculpture. Unfortunately Parliament Hill is “under construction”. They are preparing the area for Canada Day on Monday. Unfortunate for our pictures of these beautiful buildings, but a really nice idea for National Day. We’ve also been to the Rideau Falls - actually they are supposed to be close to the city, but if you walk all the way it’s kind of a long walk 🤣
    We really do Ottawa and the buildings in the city. On our way back to the hostel a thunderstorm came up and it started pouring rain! ☔️

    Auf unserem Weg zum Parliament Hill liefen wir über den Rideau Canal, eine militärisch gebaute Konstruktion (die nennen es Meisterleistung), die Zentralkanada im 19. Jahrhundert an den Handel und Ansiedlungen anband und Lake Ontario und Ottawa River verbunden hat.
    Parliament Hill und die Area drumherum ist momentan in den Vorbereitungen für den kanadischen Nationalfeiertag. Eine schöne Sache, nur doof für unsere Bilder 😂. Außerdem haben wir uns auf den Weg zu den Rideau Falls gemacht. Eigentlich sind diese sehr nah an der Stadt, aber in Birkenstock bei 30 Grad sind 4 km doch recht lang 🙊 aber der Weg hat sich gelohnt. Wir mögen Ottawa bisher sehr, die Gebäude und die Stadt selbst gefällt uns super.
    Auf unserem Weg zum Hostel hat uns ein Mega Unwetter erwischt. Es goss wie aus Eimern und es hörte nicht auf. Sobald der Regen ein bisschen nachließ, wagten wir uns den Weg weiter nach „Hause“ - natürlich absolut Klitsch nass!    Read more

    Day 7

    Ottawa 2.0

    June 29, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    Another day in Ottawa: we tried our first Canadian Beaver Tail (a deep-fried pastry) - reminds us a lot of Spanish churros 😊 while eating a really good and friendly street-musician gave us some background music. After that we walked through Rideau Shopping Mall and ran some errands.

    Ein weiterer sonniger Tag in Ottawa. Heute haben wir klassische kanadische Beaver Tails probiert. Ein frittiertes Gebäck, welches uns sehr an Churros erinnerte. Während des Essens hatten wir einen schöne und nette musikalische Untermalung von einem hiesigen Straßenmusiker. Danach sind wir durch das Rideau Center - ein Shoppingcenter - geschlendert und haben ein bisschen gestöbert.    Read more

    Day 8

    Off to Toronto

    June 30, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    We took the Greyhound from Ottawa to Toronto, took us 4,5 hours. The ride was ok, unfortunately we had no WiFi 😨 but still we arrived in Toronto late afternoon. As soon as we checked in our bags at the college backpackers hostel we met friends/family for dinner. We had a lovely evening with great food and even better people. We got so lucky because our friend Pat offered us to stay at her place for tomorrow night, so we could get out of the shitty hostel - so nice! We gladly accepted! The perfect start of our Toronto experience.

    Heute ging es für uns mit den Greyhound von Ottawa nach Toronto. Eine recht angenehme viereinhalb Stündige fahrt die uns sicher nach Toronto brachte. Dort angekommen checkten wir ins - nicht wirklich schöne oder nette - College Backpackers Hostel ein, ehe wir Freunde / Familie zum Abendessen trafen. Wir hatten einen wundervollen ersten Abend in Toronto mit tollem essen und netten Leuten. Dank unserer Freundin Pat können wir die morgige Nacht bei ihr verbringen und müssen nicht noch eine Nacht in dem unschönen Hostel verbringen. Ich bin wirklich nicht wählerisch, aber die Unterkunft ist echt nicht akzeptabel für das Geld. Trotz des schäbigen hostels also ein guter Start.    Read more

    Day 9

    First day in Toronto

    Off to our friend Pat’s place. She has an amazing condo where we’re gonna spent tonight. Inside her building: a gym and a pool! We’re so happy 😊💪🏼 did a little workout this morning and went for a swim.

    Auf geht’s zu unserer Bekannten Pat. Sie hat hier direkt in Deer Park eine große Wohnung in einen riesigen Gebäude ziemlich zentral. Dort haben wir erst einmal das Fitnessstudio und den Pool genutzt 😍 Mega cool!😇    Read more

    Day 9

    Canada day in Toronto

    July 1, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

    Later tonight, after some salad for dinner and Nutella Pizza (Matthias immediately fell in love ❤️) for dessert, we went to Mel Lastman Square to celebrate Canada Day a little and watch some fireworks with nice live music. One of the artists is Julie Black - a RnB soul singer from North York in Toronto. She sang the National Anthem - such a great voice! All in all a great first Canada day for us 🇨🇦

    Am ende des Tages sind wir nach einem leckeren Salat und köstlicher Nutella Pizza (in die Matthias sich sofort verliebte) Richtung North York zum Mel Lastman Square gefahren. Dort ist mit viel live Musik eine Show für den heutigen Canada Day. Wir hörten Julie Black, eine RnB Soul Sängerin aus Toronto, und einige gute DJs. Am Ende des Festes gab es noch ein abschließendes Feuerwerk. Was für ein schöner erster Canada Day für uns.    Read more
