    Day 461: Wadden Sea

    May 21, 2018 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today we went to the Wadden Sea, a large World Heritage site that covers much of the North Sea coastlines of Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. It's basically mud flats, but there are other areas as well like marshes, sand dunes, shoals and a bit of farmland too. Some interesting bird and animal life, though we didn't see a lot of it.

Originally we planned to go to the nearby island of Fano on the ferry, but it was quite expensive. So we drove about an hour south to the island of Mando which proved to be a great idea. It was very quiet and not crowded, and we got a really good understanding of what the site was about.

In the afternoon we headed further south to the next island, Romo, but this was much bigger and more touristy - it had a proper bridge from the mainland rather than six kilometres of dirt road leading across a mud flat with a "check the tides" warning at the start!

Back to Esbjerg in the evening where we found cheap local pizza for dinner. Surprisingly, our last night in Denmark!
