Day 499: Daytrip to Birka Island

    June 28, 2018 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Next World Heritage spot on the list were the islands of Birka and Hovgarden. These are viking archaeological sites on an island to the west of Stockholm. The easiest way to access Birka is to take a boat from central Stockholm, so that's what we did although it was expensive - 40 euros each!

The boat ride was about two hours of sitting in the blazing sun, which was nice in the morning but also quite tiring. Arrived around lunchtime where we munched on a sandwich and then followed the guided tour around, though Shandos was feeling sick and missed a bunch of the tour.

Sadly there's not a whole lot to see here - the vikings mostly built with wood so their cities are long gone, you just have to use your imagination. It's going to be a difficult video I fear! But a lovely spot, and quite a lot of locals just here for a summer day trip.

The two hour boat ride back was quite long, though we managed to get some uncomfortable seats out of the sun - win some, you lose some!
