    Day 591: Mystras

    Something a little different today - no ancient ruins! Well, not really. Drove a couple of hours south-west, past Sparta, to the town of Mystras. Here, sitting high on a mountaintop was a crusader-era fortress and citadel. It was founded in the 12th century by Franks from the Fourth Crusade, and eventually grew into a regional powerhouse.

    Lots of stuff to see here, up and down the hill but it was quite tiring work walking around. Several interesting churches as well, since it was surrounded by a city and monastic community too. Spent most of the afternoon here, then headed for our apartment just outside the city of Sparta.

    Arrived just in time, as a huge wind storm blew up with heavy rain as well - thankfully we had dinner supplies! The hotel was out of town and sitting on a ridge line, so we got pummelled by the wind basically all night. It was very intense, and felt like the house was going to blow away a couple of times!
