Day 8, Island cycle tour and Coracles

This morning we took a boat across the river to an island where our bikes were waiting for us. It was pouring with rain, but no problem, they gave us plastic coverings that come down to the knee, which the locals all wear. We then set off on our cycle tour, stopping in to meet a few families and see their local crafts.
The first was a man who makes coracles. These are circular boats made from coconut leaves, woven, put into a frame of coconut wood and then made water proof by coating with buffalo dung and then a varnish. these will then last for years. They are used as tenders by fishing boats and most people have one at home to use when it floods in the rainy season.
Next was a couple who weave the mats that people sleep on as well as table mats of various sizes. We then visited a family who make noodles which they sell to the locals and also to local eateries.
It was a really enjoyable trip, despite the rain, which was at least warm!
In the afternoon we went out in some coracles. It was fun to see them in action but it was very touristy.もっと詳しく
