Day 12, Ho Chi Minh City

Today we started with a tour of District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City, Old Saigon. It is surprisingly western, with expensive designer shops, large French colonial style buildings and modern office blocks. There are tree lined areas and plenty of green spaces. The traffic is still busy with lots of motor cycles but they do stop here at crossings and traffic lights.
We saw the Opera house, the Continental Hotel, the Hotel de Ville, the Presidential Palace. We then went to the War Remnants Museum, showing the history of the Vietnam war. There were many photos of atrocities committed by the US and also the effects of agent orange. We then visited a house that had an underground bunker used as a secret armoury for the Independence Palace attack by the Saigon Special force in the Tet Mau Than in 1968.
