    Glacier Bay NP

    August 1, 2019 ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

So unusually today was spent on the ship despite being a 'visit'. We sailed into Glacier Bay National Park around 6am, and we were on deck for much of the time from then until about 3pm looking at glaciers and for wildlife with the on-ship naturalist. We saw bald eagles, puffins, otters, whales, arctic terns, seagulls, porpoises, harbour seals, mountain goats and there was also apparently a bear although we couldn't spot her. The ship sailed to two massive glaciers (Johns Hopkins and Margerie) and past many others, sadly all in retreat due to climate change. The National Park Rangers boarded the ship and provided commentary throughout the day as well as regulating strictly the traffic into the Bay. The views throughout the day were simply stunning, and well worth the hours on deck despite the cold. This is definitely somewhere we would love to canoe.Read more
