Getting Settled In - Exploring

It took nearly two days to get here, but I’m here. I’m staying in the lovely neighborhood called Miraflores. A last minute change had me switching from a room in an apartment to a “mini-apartment”. Honestly, I really like my mini-apartment. I’m very much used to spending my days without chatting with lots of people. I will be spending 6 hours in school every day of the week so a space by myself will make it sane.

It feels like I’m not stuck in a room hiding from other people though. Ana María Talavera is my “house mother” for this usual home stay. There are two other students who I have yet to meet living upstairs.

The place is small but quite cozy. I have a nice bed, dining area table, my own bathroom, and a kitchenette - heavy on the ette part. It has a decent size half frig, electric tea kettle, a blender (really, a blender?) and an electric skillet. I can make most things that require one pot, not too big. I can also use main house kitchen if I need to. Very serviceable.

The one very weird thing about this place is that it does not rain in Lima. I repeat. It does not rain, so the kitchen area does not have a roof! Yesterday afternoon I came home from doing a little grocery shopping and found part of a bird’s egg shell that is obviously nesting above me. It is nice to wake up and open the door to the kitchen that has a cool breeze from above.

Something else one needs to know about Lima is that the water out of the tap is not potable. I brought with me a light wand that can sterilize clear water in 90 seconds. This also means no ice, no fresh salads, cut fruits and fresh raw vegetables. So sad.

First day was spend getting a phone, groceries and some supplies. I also scoped out where the laundromat is located. Everything is close by in this safe and elegant neighborhood.

Today I wandered around looking at shops, noticing the birds (no identifications yet), strolling through the parks and along the cliffs above the ocean. I saw many people launching their paragliders off the cliff. Looked fun/scary.

Viajé por dos días para llegar aquí, pero estoy aquí! Me quedo en un district lindo que se llama Miraflores. En un cambio de última hora, tuve que cambiar el lugar para quedarme. En vez de un dormitorio en un departamento, tengo un poquito departamento. Realmente, me gusta mi poquito departamento. Estoy acostumbrad a pasar todo el día sin hablar con muchas personas. Pasaré 6 horas cada día de la semana en las clases, así que un espacio privado y sola me hará seguir cuerdo.

No me siento como si estuviera atrapado en una habitación escondiéndome de otras personas. Ana María Talavera es la “madre de la casa” para este lugar. Normalmente este es un alojamiento en familia. Hay dos estudiantes que no he conocido todavía que están viviendo en el piso arriba.

El departamento es pequeño pero muy cómodo. Tengo una cama matrimonial, mesa de comedor, mi propio baño, y una cocina pequeña - muy pequeña. Tiene un refrigeradora mediana, tetera eléctrica, una licuadora (en serio, licuadora?) y sartén eléctrica. Puedo hacer casi todo lo que requiero en una sartén, pero no tan grande. Puedo usar la concina en la casa si es necesario. Muy factible.

Una cosa muy extraña sobre Lima es que no llueve en Lima. Repito. No llueve entonces la cocina en mi departamento no tiene un techo! Ayer por la tarde cuando volví de comprar comida y otras cosas encontré una parte de la cáscara de un pájaro que obviamente vive encima de mí. Es simpatico que cuando me despierto y abro la puerta de la cocina tengo un fresco viento desde arriba.

Algo más hay que saber acera de Lima es que el agua del grifo no es potable. Traje conmigo una “varita mágica a que puede limpiar agua en 90 segundos. Eso significa tampoco es posible consumir hielo, ni frutas y vegetales frescas o ensaladas. Es tan triste.

El primer día pasé buscando un plan de servicios telefónico, comida, y algunas cosas para la casa. Yo investigué donde está la lavandería. Todo está cerca de esté barrio seguro y elegante.

Desamblé alrededor mirando en las tiendas, viendo los pájaros (no los he identificación todavía), paseando en los parques y a lo largo de los acantilados sobre el océano. Ví a mucha gente volando en parapentes por los acantilados. Parecía divertido/aterrador.
