    Mountain Zebra NP

    March 10, 2018 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We went out on a drive this morning and on the way back to camp we stumbled upon 2 cheetah trying to subdue a red haartebeest, while a 3rd watched from under a thorn bush close by. We think that perhaps she was the mom of the other 2 and was teaching them to hunt ... Needless to say they were not strong enough to keep the fully grown male down and even though they took turns at trying to suffocate it, it kept getting up.

Eventually they were both so exhausted they went to lie in the shade. After a short0 while the Hartebeest managed to get up and hobbled away. Don't think it's going to be around too much longer, as it looked like one of it's back leg's was broken and he had a huge hole under his tail 😓

When the 3rd cheetah got up and we saw she had a really bad gash in her side... Don't know of this was an injury from an altercation with the Hartebeest or an old injury 😭

I reported the cheetah's demise and was told that the rangers would check it out and if necessary a vet would be called in as their cheetah are highly valued.

    😢😢😢😢
