Antigua

Mein erster Stopp in Zentralamerika ist in Antigua, eine kurze Busfahrt von der Hauptstadt Guatemalas entfernt am Fuß eines Vulkans. Die Stadt hat wunderschöne alte Kirchen und Ruinen und man kann stundenlang einfach durch die Straßen schlendern. Das gilt vor allem jetzt zur Osterzeit wo hier eine Woche lang die Luft nach Weihrauch riecht, jeden Tag Prozessionen mit riesigen auf Schultern getragenen Holzstatuen durch die Straßen ziehen und die Straßen selbst mit bunten Blumenteppichen verziert sind. Diese Teppiche werden in Detailarbeit stundenlang gefertigt nur um wenig später von der nächsten vorbeiziehenden Prozession komplett zertreten zu werden. Ich hatte in Antigua das Glück der Familie eines Freundes bei der Gestaltung eines Teppichs zu helfen, eine tolle Erfahrung mit einer sehr herzlichen Familie!

My first stop in Central America is Antigua, a short bus ride away from the capital of Guatemala at the foot of a volcano. The city is beautiful, full of colonial style architecture and you can wander around and get lost in these streets for hours. This is particularly true during this time of year. During the Semana Santa, the week leading up to Easter, the air smells like incense, big wooden floats are carried through the streets in large processions including funeral bands and the streets themselves are decorated with beautiful flower carpets. These carpets are created with beautiful details that can take hours to finish only to be completely destroyed by the next procession that comes by. I was very lucky to help the family of a friend make one of those carpets. It was a really great experience with a wonderful and very welcoming family.Read more
