      A Visit to Durres

      March 4 in Albania ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

There are a few things to see in Durres, so we thought we'd drive up to visit. Because it was supposed to rain on Monday, we decided to head up on Sunday. Ok, that was not a good idea. Remember I said Albanian roads were a bit of a challenge? Try it on a Sunday! Let's just say it took a couple of hours to drive into Durres, turn around and come back.

So despite the rain, we tried again on a Monday and we made it through. There are a few Roman artefacts around and the streets are interesting to walk around. But after a few hours the rain finally hit and we headed back, but still enjoyed the visit.

      Dürres

      June 12, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

      Day 17: Durrës

      October 30, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Well, today I left the hostel with the intention of having a relaxing beach. I was walking for around 40 min until I arrived at the famous Durrës Beach. I believe, a storm recently came in here and brought a lot of seaweed and mudd. As the season anyway is already over, the beach hasn't been cleared at all from that and also the promenade seemed to be abandoned already. Just a couple of coffee shops and very few hotels still were open. Therefore, it wasn't worth it staying there and I made my way back to the city center. From there, I tried my luck in the opposite direction. The water already looked much cleaner and clearer and finally I found a spot at the beach!

The highlight of the day, however, has been definitely the sunset...

      Day 16: Durrës

      October 29, 2023 in Albania ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Even though, the bus ride today from Kotor to Durrës took "only" 8 hours, patience was asked. There has been almost no highway and the bus has been completely full. Also the border crossing between Montenegro and Albania took a while, as the entire bus needed to show the passport at both customs.

After having checked in at the hostel, I went out to check the neighborhood. I really struggle to describe the vibes of Durrës. For sure, I arrived in the heart of the Balkan and I'm getting closer to the Orient. The atmosphere, without judgement, changed compared to the countries I've visited in the last weeks. Tradition and culture are clashing with modernity and development, that's the feeling I have so far. Let's see, which other impressions I'll gain tomorrow of Durrës...

      Durres, Albania

      October 18, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We rented an apartment in Durrës for 6 nights and enjoyed the second longer stay of our trip so far. With an apartment with a kitchen and living space, we were able to get into a good routine of exercise, work on some projects and beach time. Everything we’d been wanting at this stage.

Durres is a coastal town with a city centre set around the port and a long beach extending south. The entire beachfront was lined with large hotels and restaurants that gave the impression that in the peak season this would be a busy place. Similarly to our experience in Sicily, we arrived in the shoulder season and found most places completely closed down for the winter. The water was reasonably warm still so having the beach to ourselves was a treat. Amongst the large hotels along the beachfront, we found a small bar owned by a local guy who had a handful of umbrellas out and the cheapest beers by far. This became our regular afternoon session(sometimes morning 🤷‍♂️😂). The perfect place to stop by for a beer, some sun and the sunset, all while he tinkered away at minor improvements.

Of all the time we spent in Durres we only got up to the city centre once. Now realising that the bus system would benefit from a recce to confirm the correct terminal location for our next destination. The problem was that everything we found online about buses to the Riviera told us something different. Also was the issue that now being in the off-season we weren’t sure if some of the comments were even still relevant. We caught the local bus to the city bus terminal. And even there we were told different things. One opinion was that we would need to go back to Tirana (the opposite direction) and another suggestion was that buses heading south went from a different terminal outside of Durres.

After wandering around the centre which included an old ruins of a Roman-eta amphitheater, we set out to find this 2nd terminal. Fortunately, the local bus line consisted of one route that ran from the centre, down the coast past our apartment, and directly to the place we were told about. As we arrived, almost freakishly, we stepped off the bus and were greeted by a mini bus stopped on the kerb with a sign in its window saying “Vlorë”. Exactly where we were trying to get to! Except it was leaving literally at that moment. Being on our recce, it meant we didn’t plan on leaving till the next day. So now we needed to figure out if this chance encounter could be replicated the next day. We tried unsuccessfully to get some information from the driver who was keen to get us onboard right there to get an additional 2 fares. What we decided was it was likely that at least there would be a similar minibus at the same place/same time the next day. So with the plan to just pack up and bring our gear down early in the morning, we had enough information to at least sleep a bit easier that night.

The next day we caught the local bus down to the spot and instead of the shuttle was a taxi. The driver enthusiastically displayed a handwritten sign saying “Vlorë” and offered us a private shuttle for €10 each. Done! Funny how our lesson from Morocco of “trusting the system” seemed to be just as relevant here.

      Durrës

      August 14, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

      Durres

      May 9, 2019 in Albania ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Durrës ( Dyrrah ), founded in the 7th century BCE by ancient Greek settlers from Corinth and Corcyra, is another of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.
During the Roman period, 5th century BCE. Epidamnos as they renamed it, was a main harbour during the Peloponnesian War. After the war it expanded and changed its name to Dyrrhachion; Dyrrachium was used in Roman literature and known as the battlefield between the legions of Caesar and Pompey (49-48 BCE). Dyrrhachion was a vital Roman port of The Egnatian Way (Via Egnatia). This trade route was one of the main roadways which connected Rome with Byzantium and Durres prospered with it. A result it had the largest Roman amphitheater in the Balkans which is now a pile of rubble and easy to overlook. (I did, though I saw it.)
      =================
This is the so called Durres Castle, aka Venetian Tower.
It dates back to the 400s, during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I who was born here. Although it's only a single tower and wall reinforced by the Venetians just before the city’s conquest by the Ottomans.
It's seen some serious action right up to WWII but s you can see, the Martini rifle is no match for the Martini cocktail whose umbrella battle standards now fly triumphently above the parapets.
      =======================================================
The Great Mosque was built in 1931 by King Zog I on the site of an earlier Ottoman building. After 1967 its minaret was destroyed and the building was used centre for local youth organisations. It survived the Communist repression and is now fully functional as a religious centre.
There is another, smaller and older one; the Fatih Mosque, which dates to 1503 in the first decades of Ottoman rule. This was also closed down during communism but was declared an Albanian cultural monument in the 70s. I found it down a side alley, all boarded up.

      Die Tage sind gezählt..

      July 19, 2021 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Read more

      Durrës 2.0

      October 24, 2021 in Albania ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
