Izzy's birthday!
Morning: stopped at Port Lockroy, i.e. the penguin post office and got an Antarctic stamp. Went kayaking in the bay around Port Lockroy.
Afternoon: weather turned bad so we were on route off the Peninsula toward the antarctic sound.
The staff forgot my birthday so the party/BBQ photos are from my fake birthday, the 11th when I got my cake!Read more

Shopping in der Antarktis - Port Lockroy

Heute morgen ging es auf eine kleine Insel. Dort sind 3 Engländer in einer Forschungsstation ausgesetzt. Zum Zeitvertreib betreiben sie noch ein kleines Museum und einen Shop, den einzigen in der Antarktis. Es waren tatsächlich viele auf dem Schiff so verzweifelt und sie haben den Laden quasi leer gekauft. Auf die Insel durften immer nur 40 Passagiere, in den Laden maximal 20. Größer war dieses Aussenstelle des Königreichs nicht.
Die Lage war sicherlich einmalig mit einem großen Gletscher im Hintergrund. Pinguine und andere Vögel nisten auf der Insel und machen auch vor den Häusern nicht halt.Read more

Port Lockroy

Former British research station and post office now primarily a tourist location and post office. Started during WW II for research into long distance radio transmission. The original building has been restored as a museum, store and post office to show how things were, including the original equipment for ionosphere research for radio. And yes, the Gentoo penguins are neighbors, including some nests to under the buildings.Read more
