    • The Blockhouse and Shirley Heights

      November 25, 2023 in Antigua and Barbuda ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The Blockhouse is an old fort constructed by the British in 1789 on a high headland giving great views of the west coast of Antigua. The buildings are ruins, but the great views remain! Also saw thousands of the native butterflies in this area!

Next we went to Shirley Heights, a viewpoint used by Sir Thomas Shirley to see who was coming in and out of English Harbour, and behind it Falmouth Harbour, Antigua.

Again fabulous views, especially of the area between the two promontories, with Fort Berkeley on one side and Fort Charlotte on the other, at the entrance to English Harbour. They had a ‘boom’ chain attached to both sides which they lifted to sink unfriendly vessels!

Amazing views and this tour was described by our best guide, the enthusiastic, knowledgable and funny Natalyah, so I took her picture too!
