Walking the lap

Today was the big day! Visiting Albert Park, traditionally the hosting venue of the first Formula 1 race of the season. Machiel was so excited he was already awake at 5. Or who knows, maybe he really had slept enough after 7 hours like he claimed 😏 Susanne wasn't aware of that, so we actually only left the apartment at 10. A short tram ride brought us close to the park, after which 5.3km of walking were waiting for us. The preparations for the race in just 3 weeks were fully going on. That was nice as it meant that it was largely closed for normal traffic so we could walk just on the track itself. We entered the circuit just before turn 13 in the 3rd sector. It was interesting to see the poor state much of the asphalt and kerbs were in. Not sure if that's still getting some maintenance in the next 3 weeks. The gravel traps weren't ready yet either, but the gravel was already delivered. We tried to sneak into the pit entrance, but were unfortunately stopped by some security people.

Walking onto the start/finish straight there was a supercar meetup of some sorts, with some of them also driving on parts of the straight being loud and looking expensive. We continued into sector 1, where the usual road cuts out a part of the circuit, which in everyday life functions as a parking lot. In sector 2 we spoke to some painters who were painting parts of the Pirelli logo on the wall, turns out they had to do hundreds of them. We continued but it was getting tough as it was very sunny and around 25 degrees. Before completing our lap we had a nap under the shadow of a tree along the back straight, right next to the golf course. After that we only had the challenging turn 11-12 complex to go, which didn't look as impressive because they straighten it a bit for the normal road traffic. Laptime: around 2,5 hours, including a nap.

Most of the afternoon we spend in the apartment before heading out to St. Kilda for the evening. We walked along the beach boulevard and had dinner at a nice vegan restaurant.Read more

Only 3km from the city centre, Albert Park is huge. It has sports fields, a lake, cafe and a 5k jogging track. I decided to walk the entire way around the lake which took a bit longer than expected but whilst making a phone call to home I sat on a bench and watched the sun set across the expanse of water.Read more

Heute Morgen wurde bei schönstem Wetter an der Brücke zu Philipp Island gefrühstückt und dann auf direktem Wege nach Melbourne gefahren. Wir fuhren zum Albert Park, wo die Rennstrecke der Formel 1 liegt. Unser Black Bull hat einen Teil der Strecke abgefahren und die Ziellinie passiert. Beim nächsten Rennen geht er dann mit an den Start! 🎉
Nach dem Fotoshooting haben wir noch das Phänomen 'Pink Lake' bewundert, der im Westgate Park liegt. Wahnsinn, das Wasser war einfach so leuchtend Pink, dass man glatt denken würde jemand hat dort Farbmittel reingeschüttet. Tatsächlich entsteht diese Farbe aber aus einer hohen Salzkonzentration, einer Algenart und einer Bakterienart. Verrückt!
Unser Campingplatz für die nächsten Nächte ist der Discovery Parks Melbourne, wo wir recht früh ankamen. Gleich wird noch der Pool getestet und dann gibt's lecker Reis mit Hähnchen süß-sauer.Read more

Am Morgen haben wir an der Brücke zu Philip Island gefrühstückt, dann ging es auf direktem Wege rein in die 4,4 Millionen Einwohner Stadt Melbourne. Zunächst fuhren wir über Straßen, die auch einmal im Jahr als Formel 1 Strecke des großen Preises von Australien genutzt werden.
Es war schon faszinierend dort zu sein, wo vor vier Wochen noch das Rennen ausgetragen wurde. Man erkennt es kaum wieder ohne die ganzen Werbebanden, Tribünen und Streckenbegrenzungen.
Nachdem viele Fotos unter anderem von der Boxengasse und der Ziellinie gemacht wurden fuhren wir danach noch in den Westgate Park, eo man den Pink Lake bestaunen konnte. Dieser See färbt sich meistens im Sommer komplett pink aufgrund einer bestimmten Algenart. Sieht jedenfalls ziemlich verrückt aus! 😁
Am Nachmittag checkten wir dann im Discovery Parks Melbourne ein, wo wir drei Nächte bleiben werden.Read more

F1’S

What an early start, we caught a 6:30am train from Little River and a tram from the train station to Melbourne, on Friday and Sunday to watch the F1’s. We were there all day and watched the practice on Friday and the race on Sunday.

On Friday we did a lot of walking around the F1 track, watching the F1s. While we watching the F1s we had to wear earplugs because they were so loud. While we were at the F1s we even saw F2s, F3s and V8s, the F2 and F3 were a lot louder than the F1s.

Sunday was race day, we got there as the gates opened so we could get front row seats, the only time we left our seat was when Lachie and I went to get a ginormous ice cream. Where we were sitting we even saw some cars crash, but luckily no-one got hurt. After we watched the race I went to my first concert we saw Sneaky Sound System and Birds of Tokyo, I knew some of the songs because dad has played them all the before.

After a couple of big days we slept like babies and had a heap of fun.Read more
