Baird Bay sea lions and dolphins swim

After finding out that we had to wait a number of days for a new condenser for our air conditioner to arrive at the Cummins Garage we went back out to the coast so I could do the Baird Bay Eco Experience. Dave wasn’t keen because these southern waters are freezing, so he stayed back and did the housework. 😉
It was a hot day but extremely windy, and overcast, even the skipper joked that we might have a “Gilligans Island” stranding.
A small group of 10 people, we were supplied with full length wet suits, snorkel and mask. A 15 minute boat ride had us at the sea lion hangout and they were soon in the water and playing all around us. They are super cute to watch with their big brown eyes and graceful ballet like movements. It was a magic experience.
After a couple of hours we moved across the bay to where the dolphins were swimming. This spot was much more exposed to the crappy weather and and we only had a very brief time swimming in and around them. These animals are so fast, there one second, gone the next. Traveler What a great experience Bess. We had the pleasure of diving among seals in Fiordland . We were looking for paua and came across their nursery and the mums were constantly coming and going out to the open ocean. They are so cute and graceful under water.

Yes, we pulled up and nabbed a spot in the small
but sufficient camp ground at Baird Bay, now we just need to wait for the sun so we can swim with the sea lions.

While we wait, Brett and the kids are more than happy to fish, so whiting for tea it is, not that I am complaining.

On the last night, Brett and the kids ducked out for one last fish, Brax got two big flat head (55cm) and Brett and Lachie got lots more whiting 😋.Read more

Brett’s Adventures - Seal Lions

The waiting paid off, the sun came out, so we grabbed our wetsuits and headed out to see the sea lions.

At first, we were a bit worried as they all seemed to be sleeping on the beach and not wanting to come out and play, but it didn’t take long and the next thing we knew nearly all the sea lions were in the water and ready for a play.

It was great, it was nice and shallow so we could stand and the water was crystal clear. The sun didn’t do much for warming up the water though! Lucky, the sea lions keep you very active which helped to keep you warm.Read more

We finally made it !

Car is kind of fixed for now.

Boat is off, stunning sunset and I think Dad is getting his first fishing lesson 😂.

Apparently, having dad in the boat is worse then having the kids in the boat 😳😆.

They caught some fish, but they were not dinner worthy, better luck tomorrow.Read more

Mum and Dad meet the Sea Lions of Baird

Today, we got to take mum and dad to one of our favourite places in Australia, Baird Bay. To do one of our favourite activities, swim with the sea lions.

We pulled up and were worried the sea lions had moved somewhere warmer for the winter, because at first we could not see any, we all started to get a bit worried. Then we spotted two playing in the shallows, phew! we made our way over. Mum was the first in, it did not take long for to more came to play, she was surrounded by at least six, including a big male. Dad was quick on mum’s tail getting some footage on their go pro.

After about 45min of sea lion fun we were all freezing 🥶.

The kids wanted to film Nan getting back in the boat, but we’re not allowed 😂😂.

It was time to get changed and sit in the sun for a while.

Once we defrosted, it was time for part 2 of Brett’s Adventures. The boat tour was now headed over to look for dolphins. We found them, another magical moment, there was so many, at least 80 maybe more, jumping, feeding and playing. Lachlan kept calling out and pointing out all the babies. The dolphins especially liked it when Brett speed the boat up and raced them.

I am so glad we ( the car) finally made it here to take mum and dad out to the sea lions and dolphins.

Another successful Brett’s Adventure.

Exploring and Fishing at Baird Bay

This morning we got up and went for a drive along the beach and up along the sea cliffs. Dad got to get some real 4WDing action done in his car, unfortunately the video just doesn’t do it justice.

The boys went fishing and got some salmon for something different. We weren’t sure about this whole salmon thing! But all the other campers were raving about it, so we gave it a go and it is actually quite nice.Read more

Baird Bay

A lovely day today at Baird Bay. Went to see where we needed to go for tomorrow's swim with the "Sea Lions tour ". Lovely little beach area, a few snacks/houses but no more.
Set up for lunch on the beach at the boat ramp area but the Pelican's thought we were cleaning fish and were going to feed them, they came up really close! Weren't sure if they'd become aggressive as we didn't have anything for them so moved further down the beach where they weren't interested in us.
Our lunch room sure beats the usual and we had another beautiful bbq on the beach before again walking the length of the beach.
Drove back passed Cape Le Batt Conservation Park so stopped to see the Sea Lions again.Read more

Brett’s Awesome Sea Lion Adventure

We could not resist going out for another swim with the sea lions. With their island home being so close and assessable it would be wrong not to and wow, there were two sea lions who were up for a play today. It was bloody awesome, we all had the best time, somersaulting, diving and swimming with these two very energetic sea lions.

Once they had had enough we began to feel the cold and jumped back in the boat. Once we got changed, more and more sea lions begun to swim over to the boat for a play, but by this time were were freezing and slightly exhausted from the none stop playing/swimming. We felt bad leaving but went over to view the pups playing in the rock pools. As we go closer we could hear the mums yelling at their pups. Just like normal children the pups yelled back 😂😂😂, but also seemed to be ignoring their calls and not returning to their mums.

What an epic experience.Read more

Swim with the Sea Lions/ Dolphins tour

What an amazing tour. Swim with the Sea Lions and dolphins at Baird Bay. We had wanted to do this for a very long time and was not disappointed. This tour delivered everything it promised and more.
Leaving the shore at 9:30 and heading out to Jones island about a 15 minute boat ride, we arrived at the area where we were to swim in the sea pool with the seals. Before we could even get into the water the seals come out from the island (approx 50-70m) to play. At times the 10 of us had about 10+ seals to play with. The more we played the more they played. Several even giving me kisses on my mask!
They were just like puppies, playing around with us, so much fun.
Eventually we headed back onto the boat to go across the other side of the bay where the dolphins hang out. As soon as we got there the word was out, dolphins, quick in the water. So in we went where a pod of approx 15 dolphins swam around and under us for about 15 minutes, they loved swimming very close and giving eye contact!
The weather was warm and waters so clear making it a terrific day for the trip.
Lunch on the beach again and another big beach walk where there were some beautiful shells made the day just wonderful.Read more
