      Darwin: Top End Birthday

      April 11 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 82 °F

This is a skip-ahead footprint as our April travel schedule in Australia isn’t affording me much downtime to write and process photos between our mini-adventures.

Not only is The Ghan rail journey now in the “check column,” so are several days on Kangaroo Island (yes, we saw kangaroos galore in the wild) and a museum-day in Adelaide. I’ll eventually catch up with the missing footprints.

This morning, we flew from Adelaide to Darwin. This time for just an overnight before we embark on an expedition cruise around the Kimberleys … our “joint” birthday experience gift to me. I can call it my birthday cruise because back home in the USA, it will be the 11th when we embark the cruise … even if it is the 11th here today!!!

Here are a couple of sunset shots from our stroll back to the hotel from Shenanigans tonight … Mother Nature’s celebration of my special day.

      Darwin: Morning Swim

      April 1 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

      A good night’s rest.

A decent breakfast poolside, enjoying the low humidity before the day began to warm up.

Mui couldn’t resist the siren call of the empty pool. So, after breakfast, he donned his swim gear and went for a swim while I read for a bit poolside.

A relaxing start to our day.

      Darwin

      May 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

I am glad I came to Darwin, if only to ease myself back into reality.

Bali was a whirlwind dream of meeting people, beautiful views, amazing foods and and relaxation. Now, back in Australia, I am forced to return to reality. Flights need booking, accommodation needs sorting, busses organised and budgets figured out. I need to find a job, and do my own laundry.

And, I dont want too. I'm am forcing myself to do those things, but in between? I am rewatching the hunger games, because they are all over my fyp with the new movie coming out. I am finishing my bali journal, a labour of love. I am reading a rather twisted book that is somehow amazing and the most difficult thing to read. And I'm writing. 2 weeks to fill a journal with stories, ideas, poetry. Anything and everyhting, a personal challenge to myself after having written nothing in Indonesia.

Perhaps I am wasting my time in Darwin, but I dont have the budget to do a 4hr $200 tour. And honestly I dont want to. The whole crocodiles thing doesn't sit quite right with me. I am content to slowly ease myself back into reality while also be creative. Finding the balance is making me feel a little guilty but I only have a few more days until I start working again, I'm going to enjoy them how I want. Even if my brain is telling me it's a waste.

The common area has a massive tv and it was playing the British channel over here covering the coronation. According to hat nobody is looking forward to the coronation tomorrow and they made it sound as though 90%+ of the British population doesn't care. Interesting to see the foreign media portraying it in this way. I imagine the BBC is putting a very positive light on it so definitely a contrast.

I headed back to the library in the afternoon to utilise their beautiful wifi and getting some more stuff sorted. Namely, my flight home is booked. Didnt think I'd stay away forever did ya? Also, it means I just past half way. The 30th of April was half way.

      Kakadu Nationalpark - Darwin

      January 23 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

      August 6, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

      Explorations

      May 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Darwin is a strange city.

I woke up after not great sleep thanks to the bar being super loud until 12pm. The window in our room is broken so there was no blacking the heavy music playing. The musical was also bad which didnt help.

But I got up early so I could eat some of the free breakfast and head out for a walk around the city before it got too hot.

Now the thing is, every city should have a draw, especially a capital. And I cant figure out what Darwin had to offer long term.

I mean, Melbourne has coffee and the 'hip' young scene going for it. Sydney, is Sydney. Cairns has the GBR and the rainforest. Hobart had mount Wellington and the saturday markets. Every city I have been too has a draw, the reason why people go and stay. I dont know what Darwin's is.

That being said, the city is nice. A lot of things are designed for outdoor living which makes sense given the climate. The waterfront has a lot of communal areas where it is windier and lots of water activities. There are parks dotted about and a good view, it's a nice city. I just dont know why you would choose to live here over so many other cities that have more going on.

Maybe the solitude. The one thing darwin does have is geographical solitude.

      Darwin - Crocosaurus Cove

      May 8, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Today we went to Crocosaurus Cove with a VIP tour. The tour was insightful and the aussie guiding us knew lots of facts and knew the crocodiles well! We started the tour in fresh water aquarium before moving on to looking at the big crocs, and learning abit about them and where they came from. We went on to feed Burt, the famous 80 year old from crocodile Dundee who is a bachelor, after attacking most of the females in his life. We fed him some suspicious looking hearts which was our first experience of hearing the jaw 'pop'. We also held the baby crocs, along with a snake and the frill necked lizard. We learnt that the big crocs have all been captured due to being deemed a hazard to humans in the wild. Although Croc farms aren't natural, the guide made a good point about the fact these farms protect the wold crocs from being hunted for their meat and their leather and told us the population is 1 Croc to 1 human in the northern territory. Burt had a missing leg, which unlike Randall, is from an operation (Randall's was most likely from a fight with a fellow crocodile). The guide told us how these injuries don't affect their abilities at all and that their bodies can stop the blood supply from leaving the limb. Burt also had a missing eye and a tooth hanging off! We found out they go through 3000 teeth in their lifetime as they regularly fall out and gain new teeth. There were only 2 crocodiles cohabiting there, which we were told is very rare as crocodiles are very territorial, but Will and Kate have been living together for 30 years now, and have babies each year. The size difference between them was vast, with Kate only being around 2 metres, and Will, like the others was 5 metres. We were told this didn't make her any less scary!Read more

      Darwin

      September 25, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C
