      Zurück in den Reisemodus!

      After four months of work it is time to have fun again! On Friday is our last night shift before we leave Kalgoorlie :) But the four months we spent here was worth it. We were able to apply for our second year visa and we have saved up enough money to travel around Australia. But now we are looking forward to exploring Australia.

      From Kalgoorlie we will take the Great Central Road, known as the longest shortcut of Australia to go from Western Australia to Queensland. Huge parts of the road are unsealed with no towns for days. It will be a good adventure to start with! By the way: From here to the coast of Queensland it is a distance of around 3600km (comparable with a trip from Cologne to the Nordkapp plus an extra 500km).

      Nach vier Monaten Arbeit ist es endlich wieder Zeit weiter zu reisen! Von Freitag auf Samstag arbeiten wir zum letzten Mal und am Sonntag geht es dann wieder so richtig los. Auch wenn die Arbeit nicht wirklich spannend war hat sich die Zeit hier in Kalgoorlie für uns gelohnt. Die Reisekasse ist wieder ziemlich gut gefüllt und wir können nun auch offiziell unsere Visaverlängerung beantragen. :)

      Von hier nehmen wir die "längste Abkürzung Australiens" nach Queensland: Die Great Central Road. Eine Straße auf der wir das Outback so richtig kennen lernen werden. Bis nach Queensland haben wir eine Strecke durch zwei Zeitzonen und mit einer Länge von ca. 3600km vor uns (vergleichbar mit der Strecke von Köln bis ans Nordkapp plus 500km). Davon wird vor allem der erste Teil spannend, denn kurz nach Kalgoorlie werden wir die Zivilisation verlassen und über 1000km ungeteerte Outback Straße vor uns haben. Lediglich drei Roadhouses (Raststätten) werden wir bis zum Uluru ansteuern können, ansonsten heißt es Natur pur!

      En Suite Camping in Kalgoorlie

      We’re at the Discovery Parks Kalgoorlie Goldfields Campground … here for two nights.

      This is an older campground with amenities similar to the other caravan parks we’ve stayed in during this trip … spacious; power, water, sullage point at the site; central black tank dump point. But our site has something extra. Something they call an en suite … a small building that encloses a toilet and shower. I imagine this comes in handy for long-term campers … of which there looks to be quite a number. They don’t have to worry about dumping tanks every few days.

      The en suites look big from the outside. Until you open the door and realize that you only have half the building … the other half belongs to the site behind you. The facilities are a little tired-looking … reminds me of the bathrooms of the old motels along highways. But they are clean, and they come with amenities like washcloths, soap, shampoo, etc.

      Kalgoorlie: The Rest of the Story

      After our interesting insider tour of the Super Pit, we were free to do as we wished in town. My haircut appointment was at 3:20, so we had plenty of time to while away.

      First up … lunch at the historic York Hotel. It was just opening up when we arrived at 11:30a. We placed our order for food at the bar and headed upstairs to the terrace to have lunch with a view.

      Afterwards, we hopped in the motorhome and drove the 2 miles or so to the Super Pit Public Lookout. A different perspective across the big hole from where we had gotten out of the tour bus. Lots of information and a shovel bucket for a photo op. There is a nice place from which to look out over the pit that doesn’t have a mesh safety fence.

      Returning to town, we stopped at Coles to pick up some more water. And then meandered a bit, finding a few more of the murals from the now-defunct HeArtWalk program. We also checked out the Kalgoorlie train station where we will stop on the Indian-Pacific for our off-train experience on 3 April.

      We still had some time on our hands, but there was nowhere else for us to go. So, we found the barbershop I spotted yesterday, and while Mui got a haircut, I sat in the shade outside on the sidewalk. Then we reversed positions. I went to the salon for my haircut and he sat outside on the sidewalk … comfy thanks to a nice breeze.

      It’s interesting how amidst the rundown or closed shops there are new, modern ones. The salon — Ahead of Time — fit the latter description. The hairstylist, a young woman who has lived in Kalgoorlie all her life and has no desire to move anywhere else, did a great job cutting and styling my hair.

      Gold-Minenstadt Kalgoorlie-Boulder

      Gestern trafen wir nach 4.5 Stunden fahrt in Kalgoorlie ein. Die Goldminenstadt schlechthin. Hunderte von Kilometer durch das "nichts" gefahren und auf einmal fährst du in eine "Stadt" mit 30k Einwohnern.

      Zuerst gingen wir zum Lookout, der grössten Mine, in Kalgoorlie. Zum Super Pit Lookout. Als sich da, Nino den grossen Zehen verletze, 🤕 beendeten wir den Besuch abrupt.

      Anschliessend gingen wir zum Campingplatz, dieser, mit dem kühlen Pool sorgte für Freude bei den Kids und gleichzeitig Abkühlung für Jung & Alt - 🏊‍♂️ bei doch 35 Grad 🥵

      Eigentlich war der Plan für heute, eine kleine "Touristenmine" zu besuchen und "nur" zwei Stunden fahrt hinter uns zu bringen - aber der Drang nach Meer, Strand und Küste ist zu gross. 🌊🏊‍♂️🩳Desshalb fahren wir heute nochmals einen "vier Stünder", damit wir heute noch nach Esperance kommen. 😎 Die Kids werden keine Freude haben, aber dafür ist die Belohnung in Form von Spielplätzen, grünen Wiesen und grossen Sandstränden, hoffentlich eine Genugtuung ✊️      Read more

      Goldrush

      Heute haben wir einen eher etwas faulen Tag. Da morgen Weihnachten ist, bauen wir mit Alex (der 5-jährige Sohn von Taniece) das Lebkuchenhaus, welches wir ihm aus Deutschland mitgebracht haben. Er ist total begeistert von dem Zuckerguss, da sie ihn in Australien normalerweise mit Butter anstatt Zitronensaft machen. Also müssen wir noch eine zweite Schüssel Zuckerguss anrühren, da nur ca. die Hälfte auf dem Haus gelandet ist.

      Anschließend fahren wir mit Jock zu der Goldmine in welcher er früher gearbeitet hat. Die Minenschächte verlaufen unter ganz Kalgoorlie, sind heute jedoch nicht mehr in Gebrauch. Anders als die Mine selbst, welche auch heute in Betrieb ist. Somit gucken wir den riesigen Baggern und LKWs einige Zeit zu, wie sie das Gestein aus der Mine transportieren. Das ist ziemlich beeindruckend, da die Mine fast so groß ist wie die gesamte Stadt. Gold haben wir allerdings leider keines gefunden 😉. Laut Jock wird in ca. jeder achten LKW-Ladung ein golfballgroßes Stück Gold gefunden. Wir fragen uns, ob sich der ganze Aufwand dafür denn rentiert. Aber sonst würden sie es wohl nicht machen 🙂 .

      Als wir gerade wieder fahren wollen, entdecken wir noch ein Babykangoroo. Eine Frau hat das Kangoroo dabei und kümmert sich darum, da die Mutter gestorben ist. Das Kangoroo muss die nächsten 18 Monate alle 4 Stunden mit Milch gefüttert werden, kein ganz so leichter Job. Dafür ist es aber super süß und so fluffy, ein perfektes Haustier 😀. Leider würden wir aber wohl Probleme mit dem Zoll bekommen.😕

      Zurück bei Taniece toben wir noch einige Zeit im Pool bevor wir relativ früh ins Bett fallen. Wir wollen dem Weihnachtsmann ja genug Zeit geben, die Geschenke vorbei zu bringen 😉 und mit einem 5-jährigen Kind wird die Nacht vor Weihnachten wahrscheinlich nicht allzu lang.      Read more

      18. Travelläum

      The first time we missed our Travelläum! :( Now it is time for our review of the last month, but to be honest we haven't done very much. We worked a lot (6 days a week with 10hrs daily) and stayed in Kalgoorlie most of the time. Till end of August/beginning of September this won't change, but we already have so many plans for the time after that!

      Zum ersten Mal auf Reisen haben wir doch tatsächlich unser Travelläum verpasst, aber um ehrlich zu sein so viel haben wir im letzten Monat auch nicht gemacht. Mittlerweile haben wir eine 6-Tage Woche mit je 10h Arbeit (Samstags nur 8h :)) sodass sogar Wochenendausflüge wohl eher selten werden. Zumal der Winter hier nun auch so richtig angekommen ist. Es ist kalt, nass und windig. Es hat etwas von einem Kölner Winter. Aber wir schmieden schon Pläne für die Zeit nach der Arbeit. Dennoch ein kurzer Rückblick auf die Zeit in Kalgoorlie und unseren Ausflug nach Esperance.      Read more

      Travelläum-Time! We are now in Kalgoorlie, somewhere in nowhere and waiting for a job. Nevertheless it is time for a short review of the last month.

      Kalgoorlie-Boulder Super Pit

      The Super Pit lookout in Boulder is amazing. A very deep mine they still find gold in. It is really huge and a good point to learn something about the mine and the gold rush in the early 20th century.

      Der Aussichtspunkt in die Super Pit Mine ist richtig cool. Die Mine liegt direkt vor den Toren der Stadt und ist gigantisch groß bzw. vor allem tief. Auch heute wird hier in circa jeder siebten LKW Ladung noch Gold gefunden.      Read more

      Haus, Fahrrad, Arbeit & die 30er

      Some good news: We do not sleep in a tent anymore and moved into a cabin with bathroom, kitchen & huge terrace. It is almost freezing at night here in Kalgoorlie so it is much more comfortable than sleeping under two blankets and sleeping bags in our tent.

      Last week we celebrated my 30th birthday and the 300k km birthday of Balu with a chocolate cake and a great steak in a restaurant for dinner. It was the first time since we are in Australia we have had dinner in a restaurant, it is just too expensive to do it every day.

      Some more good news from last week: I found work in the mining industry! Now I am crushing and milling rocks coming from the gold mines for 10 hours a day. It is hard and very boring work, but it is also payed very well so I won't complain. Janine is still looking for a job but hopefully she will find one as well soon.

      For the next three months we will probably stay here in Kalgoorlie now to save up some money for new adventures in Australia!

      Es gibt ein paar gute Neuigkeiten: Wir müssen nicht mehr im Zelt schlafen sondern wohnen jetzt in einem kleinen Häuschen auf dem Campingplatz. Wir haben jetzt unser eigenes Bad, eine Küche und eine riesige Terasse. Da hier so langsam der Winter auch so richtig ankommt und die Temperaturen nachts auch kaum über dem Gefrierpunkt liegen ist so eine Hütte viel wert. Den ersten Outback Regen haben wir nun auch erlebt und wissen jetzt, dass man ihn nicht unterschätzen sollte. Straßen verwandeln sich in Flüsse oder Seen, denn Gullys oder gar Abflusskänale gibt es hier nicht...

      Dieses Wochenende haben wir haben wir dann auch gleich einen doppelten dreißigsten gefeiert. Am Freitag mit Schokotorte (von Janine heimlich gemacht) und leckerem Steak im Restaurant haben wir meinen 30. gefeiert und heute haben wir noch mit Balu die 300.000km geknackt.

      Eine weitere gute Nachricht ist, dass ich seit einer Woche wieder zur arbeitenden Bevölkerung gehöre. In einer Fabrik ganz in der Nähe zermahle ich Steine aus den Goldminen. Es ist ein wirklich langweiliger aber auch sehr anstrengender Job, aber er wird dafür sehr gut bezahlt und er zählt als Arbeit für eine Visumsverlängerung um ein weiteres Jahr (bis April 2021). Witzig ist, dass hier jeder Arbeitstag mit einer Alkoholkontrolle beginnt... :D Janine sucht noch weiter nach einem Job aber wir sind guter Dinge, dass wir auch hier bald einen Erfolg vermelden können.

      Fakt ist aber jetzt, dass wir wohl für die nächsten drei Monate hier bleiben werden bevor wir wieder so richtig mit dem Reisen beginnen. Erstmal heißt es: Kassen füllen und die Pflichtarbeit (88 Tage) für unsere Visaverlängerung erledigen. Die Footprints werden dementsprechend jetzt wohl erstmal deutlich seltener!      Read more

      Kalgoorlie

      Kalgoorlie was awesome! Big trucks, big diggers, big holes, big pipelines! (You may have gathered already that Rebecca isn't writing this description 😊 )

      Kalgoorlie is an iconic old gold mining town. It has gone from thousands of prospectors descending on it in a gold rush, to one of the largest gold mines, and holes, in the world.

      The result is not exactly picturesque, but it is quite fascinating. Some random points of interest:

      - There were many beautiful old pubs and other buildings
      - There were many goldmines dug over the years, some of them are in the town and fenced off so people don't fall in
      - An Australian billionaire (Alan Bond) was the impetus to combining all the mine rights into a single entity and digging a huge open pit mine instead
      - Many early miners simply died of thirst as they were from places like Ireland and they had no concept of a place with no water
      - Water was brought in on camel train, now it is pumped in through a 566 km pipeline from Perth!
      - The main street is so wide to allow a camel train to do a U turn
      - Out of 6 huge truck loads, 5 are just waste rock, and the one with gold ore has a total of a golf ball sized amount of gold

      On our second last day there were some big storms which caused a power outage, which turned out to be quite severe. We spent a very hot night (28 deg) and next morning the entire town had no power, mobile or internet. And hence no shops, petrol, or even Google maps! And it was going to be 42 deg!

      Thankfully we were leaving that day, and filled up with fuel the day before. So we got out and to Esperance OK, but it turned out to be a multi-day fiasco for Kalgoorlie, worst in 30 years apparently.      Read more
