It was only 30 minutes drive, but worlds apart to our next stop! We'd booked Mandalay Holiday Resort, fully aware of its touted kid-friendly set up. Half an hour after leaving our last campsite we arrived and were informed we'd scored the "best site in the park" (enjoying this recurring theme...think there might just be something sensible about booking in advance when you can!). We pulled up to site 22 (and were subsequently congratulated by numerous others about our amazing site) and were pleased to find we had only 1 neighbour and a fine view of the oval, playground, jumping pillow etc etc. Kids set up in record time and disappeared in all directions - yep, we had arrived in kid's paradise! The kids enjoyed all that was on offer (and additional fun like movie night, disco night, laser tag, water slide, indoor pool) and Jen and Roy tolerated the school holiday festivities by indulging in some delicious food truck catering - Indian, French and Spanish delights! Thankfully, the beach was just across the road so the kids could be persuaded to leave the enclave occasionally for some beach cricket, snorkelling or sand scratching!
We managed to convince the kids to leave the caravan park (not sure how!) and hopped on our bikes to ride to the Busselton Jetty. Busselton has a great bike/walk track that stretches for kilometres from the centre of town and we used this to ride the roughly 5km to the world's longest jetty (1.8km) and walked out to the end of the jetty - gloriously clear water and enough squid ink sprayed all over the boards to convince the kids and Roy it would be worth coming back with some rods!
In between some serious kid fun-times and squidding at the jetty, we ventured into "Cape" territory with a lunch out at the Eagle Bay Brewery. Fabulous food with local beers and wine and rolling green grass and a sandpit for the kids - everyone was happy! A brief stop at the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse after lunch to check out the views (the 100+ year old surrounding cottages were all being renovated) and note that it was one of the shortest lighthouses we'd ever seen!
Overall, the weather for our few days wasn't great but we're not sure the kids even noticed!Read more
