Day 3 at Anton Golino Stable

      March 12, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Another early morning for me. Same routine today as the other days.
Also today the owner came with something to eat for us.

I started to get to know the horses more and more and also the paddocks and other stuff.
I always try to clean up the stuff, take care of the wash and roll up all bandages so the others don't need to worry about these kinds of stuff.
Tracey and Jack left around 11 am to go to the race with Pepper, the only existing Pacer with Ready Cash as a farther.
It didn’t go good for her, it’s was her first race and everything went wrong. So she galloped from the start.
      Next time!

We got ready around 1 pm today and Marika and I got the chance to take a little nap after lunch before it was time again to go out in the stable to fix the horses for the races today.

We are taking with us Pinky and Ally. Ally got a little tie-up on Tuesday after training, I fixed her and told the guys that she is walking strange and felt a bit hard in her muscles, so I gave her a quick massage.

So we were a little bit unsure how she gonna be today, though everything was ok with her yesterday and in the morning today.

Around 2.45 pm we left the farm with Anton. It took us just around an hour to get to Maryborough Racetrack. It’s really warm here, around 30 degrees! Soo nice! It’s so ich colder in Ballarat than it was on the west coast the last couple of weeks, so I am usually freezing a lot here 😬

Same today as yesterday, load off the stuff and horses and let them have a wee.
We were pretty early so we had some time to watch some races before we started to fix the horses. We met Marika’s friend Abbey with whom we were celebrating the new year last time I was visiting Australia. So that was nice to see her again.

Marika went first out with Pinky and after that with Dolly to warm them up. While I fixed the other horse ready for the warm-up/ race together with Anton.
Pinky was really stressed and running over us a few times, but she did a really good race and was actually winning it very easy 🤗🤩
She had to go to the doping test, and while Marika was gone with her, I fixed Dolly ready and even she did a really good race and got second! Anton was very pleased and happy.

We fixed the horses and while they packed together the stuff I walked with them so they can dry and Pinky don’t get to stressed.
We stopped on the way home to get some chips and beer as Anton wanted to celebrate today’s results with a beer on the way home 😉😂

Back in the stable, he helped us to fix the horses and kicked out Dolly as she is sleeping outside. Marika and I went to Ballarat to get some food and had a nice evening before we went to bed around 9.30 pm.
It has been a long day again.

      Maryborough, Victoria

      July 31, 2016 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Arrived at Maryborough and all set up by 2:00. Ecka has checked out the place and agrees that these are some nice digs. We have a resident Plover which is giving us some grief on our way to the toilets but I suspect that there is a family near by as I can hear some noises in the bushes.Read more

      Maryborough

      August 4, 2016 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Today I will venture out for a walk. The weather is sunny and just the inspiration I need to get out and walk. We are situated just next to Lake Victoria. It is not as big as Lake Wendouree but for that I am grateful as I walked the lake and found that by the time I returned, the knees couldn't take much more. It took me half an hour at a slow pace. The lake is surrounded by water fowl an what appears to be domestic ducks although they have interesting colors on them. Very pretty in fact and funny enough Steve has taken to feeding them.Read more

      Family Checkin

      June 28, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Our first stop on the way to Maryborough was the public weigh-bridge. We weren’t sure of our rig weight so a quick check showed us that we were up to total weight limit but overweight on the front of the caravan. So a little re-distribution of items and we should be all legal. We were also running with full water tanks and easily 50kg of stuff to drop off to the kids at Maryborough.

Then only 1.5 hrs to spend time with Gareth, Jess and the grandkids. We hired a cabin in the camping ground for the family and provided an excellent idea as it gave us more space and a warm place to hang out together as a family. Camping in an Victorian winter is not for the faint hearted.

Two days filled with playgrounds, bike rides and games of UNO, Lola is the reigning champion with a late winning streak. Safe to say Granny and Gramps are pretty tired tonight. It has been fun starting to see Sonny’s personality starting to emerge as he becomes more comfortable with us. It will be a wrench to leave them in the morning knowing we won’t see them quite as regularly as we have.

We have decided to travel to the Big Red Bash via South Australia. It is quite daunting as we will tackle the Birdsville track which is 500 km of dirt road however we will have a few days to break it up into smaller sections. The track was closed last week due to severe flooding so who knows what we will find. Tomorrow we are aiming for Renmark which is just over the SA border. This appears to be the safest route to avoid any covid questions at the border although we will be required to take covid tests soon after entry. Such is the life of any traveller in this country presently. We hedged our bets yesterday and gained entry via declarations for SA, NSW, and Queensland just in case we changed our minds tomorrow.

      Avoca

      November 10, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

After booking our caravan in for a product recall service in Maryborough, the weekend finally arrived. Earlier in the week we made the decision to combine this trip with actually using our van as it needed to be brought here anyway. We packed up the van Wednesday night, both worked Thursday and left home Friday at 7:15am. Whilst walking around in Maryborough waiting for the van, we decided to head across to Avoca and stay in a free camp on the river, which happened to be in the middle of town. It's a pretty place and not too noisy. A short walk across a road was the RV park with a toilet we could access.
As we set up the Van on Friday afternoon we discovered 2 annoying things; 1. The pop up roof was stuck, so we could only pop it half way up at one end and 2. The caravan toilet wasn't flushing. Cue a large sigh and some unskilled owners trying to fix the problems.
When it became clear we were not up to the task we just decided to enjoy the day and settled down for a G&T and dinner.

On Saturday we worked out that it was a failed gas strut causing the roof issue so we (meaning Jamie) disengaged the strut and up popped the roof. But no such luck with fixing the toilet.

We took a drive out to the state Forrest and a look out which was a lovely view of grape vines and mountains. We had lunch at the Blue Pyrenees winery and then headed to the Mount Avoca (organic) winery for a tasting. Some lovely wines and a fantastic lunch in a pretty patio setting.

Both of us have work to do and neither of us are making much headway. Thank goodness today is nowhere near as hot as yesterday.

      Avoca

      July 22, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Decided to leave the Botanical gardens about 1.30 as a cold wind blowing. Drove down the Avenue of remembrance. This avenue contains approx 3000 trees and is in remembrance of soldiers of WW1 who enlisted from Ballarat and surrounds. It covers 22 kms. Drove onto Avoca where we had a coffee at a cafe that specialises in gluten free. Bought a GF roast chicken for dinner. On the way back to the Caravan Park went to Ryans IGA store which had a huge Gluten free selection.Read more
