      VICTORIA! At last!

      March 14, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We LOVE Victoria! We love the weather. We love the cold nights. We love the lack of humidity. We even like some of the people. Not all. But some.

Mallacoota was lovely just over the border. That was the first time I'd snorkelled in cold water for four years! I was so surprised, I got out and went back in again just to check I hadn't, I dunno, briefly transported to another dimension? But it's just Victoria!
And a change from the Coral Sea to the Tasman Sea, which gently wafts past Antarctica. I was so surprised, as the water was warm an hour north in NSW.

I decided to mix things up a bit, I'm so sick of caravan parks. So we did a farm stay at Tostaree Cottages near Nowa Nowa, and promptly fell in love with 'camping' again. Apparently, it's called camping. Even though we're in a caravan.

There was a huge barn with a bar for happy hour and a little pony called Vegemite in the paddock next to us, that I had to make a special trip to the 'General Store' (no supermarkets) to buy some sad, wilting carrots for.

The campground was right on the Gippsland Rail Trail, so I yanked the bike off the rack where it was growing cobwebs and we set off to look at old trestle bridges galore, of which there were a plethora in the area. It felt like I was cycling through mud, so mental note was made to trade it in for an ebike ASAP. No point lugging a bike around you never use because you hate everything about it.

We sadly waved Vegemite goodbye and moved onto Bairnsdale and we loved it there, too. Cute country town with lots of shops. Traded in the old rubbish bike for a new ebike - which I love and use every day. It's only a basic model with a very small battery that doesn't last for half the ride, but it's smooth and oh so helpful on the hills! Had my scraggly hair done, chucked out old ripped, stained clothes and got new ones. The lovely pool was next to our site. And there was a HUGE loud storm that I thought was going to end us. I really didn't want to leave Bairnsdale but my bank account needed us to move on 😁

Off we went to Maffra Golf Club (still avoiding caravan parks) where I was briefly reminded that human beings are awful creatures. The caretaker was a spiteful, micro managing piece of work who constantly over stepped her remit, so I went out of my way to annoy her every single day. The golf course was lovely and lush and green and I took great joy in running the ebike over it every single day, with Dick trying to keep up, practising my slides and leaving deep ruts in the grass that she'll be crying over tomorrow 😏

Now you find us at Dargo River Inn at Crooked River. We're in the Victorian High Country, not far from the Snowy River and amongst old gold mining towns. Which we all know are my jam. Lots of 4WD tracks here that take you to see old mining ghost towns, we'll be on those tomorrow.

Just watching a storm roll in after chicken parmigiana at the pub. Very content.

Dick has his final Public Access Test in Melbourne in a few weeks, which, if he passes, will make us a fully accredited Assistance Dog team - so we've been busy training on the buses and trains and sharpening up his verbal commands. I've unknowingly been training him with hand signals for four yrs which, for some reason, the organisation doesn't quite comprehend are vastly superior to verbally barking commands at the dog. Our genius goes unacknowledged and unrecognised, yet again!

      Dargo Hotel

      March 10 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

It was an easy run into Dargo. Lots of people around due to the long weekend. We're staying at Dargo Hotel, last time we stayed at Dargo River Inn, which was great, we just wanted to change it up. We found a spot, set up then headed up for dinner. It wasn't too busy in the beer garden, but absolutely chockers inside. A few dogs embarrassing their owners too while sweet Pup just ignored everyone ha! Lots of people stopped to have a chat, mostly about Pup, and we listened in to convos about the tracks people had been doing over the weekend. Most people had been on the drinks most of the day so were very relaxed. The wait time wasn't too bad considering how busy it was, we both got parmas, then headed back to the camper. We were pretty tired so fed the boy and turned in for an early night.Read more

      Quiet time and a swim

      March 11 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

On our way back through Dargo, we stopped off at the public hall again for some quick wifi access to check weather etc. We ducked back to the camper to relax for a bit, but not before going to check out the river. Pup ran! It was so bloody weird, he even went over and said hello to the neighbours, who is this dog? Making the most of his freedom without his lead attached to his harness. He did have a short nap when we got back to the camper but it was so hot at 35 degrees. We were flicking around the 4wd books and realised that our plan for the next 2 days might not work. We'd planned to leave the camper at Dargo and go for a 2 day trek around Wonnangatta hut, but looking at the maps, the majority of the tracks are national parks, which won't work to camp in the rooftop with Pup somewhere along the track. The main one Ben wanted to do is Billy Goats Bluff, which we were thinking we could make work on it's own for a day trip. We decided to go back to wifi to google some of the camping options along the original 2 day track. No luck though. So we'll do BGB tomorrow and figure out a way back, then head towards the western end of the Lakes on Wednesday, we've got a spot booked at Paradise Beach which Parks Victoria run, but it's dog friendly. It also works out well with the forecast, it's meant to rain late wed/Thursday morning here at Dargo, which would be a nightmare, as a wet pack up is always terrible. Even moreso since we have our originally planned airbnb booked for 3 nights in Lakes entrance, so if the camper was wet and packed up for a few nights, it wouldn't be good for anyone. Back to the camper to change into swimmers and to freshen up in the river. I went in first and Pup followed, walking right on in. He's never been anti water, but we definitely didn't expect him to walk in as deep as he did on his own, we didn't call him or anything. Pup does love being ON the water, often on our paddleboards or a boat, but in? His face will tell you otherwise, but considering he walked himself in and didn't try to walk out for a while, tells us he couldn't have hated it too much.
After a bit, we headed back, dried off and enjoyed being outside. Pup didn't enjoy that part so much, but he was too damp to go straight up onto his bed. Chicken wraps for dinner before some netflix and an early night.

      Last night in Dargo

      March 12 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We were back for a quick freshen up and to move the solar blanket before heading over to Dargo River Inn for dinner, where we stayed last time we were here. They've built some add ons with cabin accommodation and the beer garden is looking very fresh. Pup was met by some very enthusiastic dogs, Sarge and Major, both blue cattles and both real working dogs. One left him alonge pretty quickly, but the other was desperate to play, he was barking up the wrong tree. Very big for 5 months old too and reminded us a little of Titan when he tried to bully Pup into wrestling. I had a steak sandwich and another parma for Ben. When the other dogs left, pup had built up some confidence and was off running around the beer garden, often out of site. It's all fenced in so it was fine, but again, what the hell, Pup, who are you? A short drive back to the camper to prep a few bits and pieces for tomorrow. I had a quick, cold shower. It was fresh! But I just felt blah and needed it. All snuggled into bed and ready to move on tomorrow.Read more

      Victorian high country

      March 29, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Have had about 10 days or so up in the the high lands. Very scenic indeed but cold. Miss the part Tristan wanted to see because of bush fires 🔥 that are still burning up there and probably will until spring they authorities say. Still got another week to look forward to yet.Read more

      Dargo

      February 12 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Dargo is known for its groves of century-old walnut trees that line the valley floor.
A quaint village with its 1898 pub, general store and church and a population of about 105. Although a minor gold rush was experienced in the mid 1800s, the town was primarily a resting place and later a supply town for miners on their way to the Grant, Talbotville and Crooked River goldfields nearby.
This was where I had to visit the bush nurse 20 years ago just to get some Zyrtec - it took 20 minutes to get a non prescription medication for hayfever!!
