Fitzroy Island - letzter Tag in Cairns

      November 3, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Fitzroy Island Turtles; Bats in Cairns

      August 19, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Our last morning on the ship started with an early morning, steep climb to the summit of Fitzroy Island—for those who were keen. From the top, we could look out over the channel and islands to the sea in a beautiful clear day. Dani pointed out a type of palm tree that ‘walks,’ as it grows new roots in search of water (inspiration for Tolkien’s Ents?)

The hikers got ‘second brekky’ back on the beach, then we got our snorkel gear on for our last time on the reef. There were beautiful jellyfish, which we steered clear of, even though we were told they were not the stinging kind. Darryl saw a small reef shark, and we both hovered over a single green sea turtle a couple of times, and watched them drift to the surface for a breath of air. They looked just like Crush in ‘Finding Nemo.’

After awhile, we were called in from the water to visit the turtle rehabilitation center on the island. One of the founders, Jenny, talked to us about their work, and about the threats to turtles (single-use plastics, and hunting, primarily).

Back in Cairns, we said our farewells to the amazing crew of Coral Expeditions, checked in to to our accommodations and headed over to see the flying fox bats we’d been told about. The bats gather in huge numbers in trees on the library grounds. A sign said their wingspan can be up to 1.5 meters, and they looked 3-4 times larger than the bats we’re used to seeing. The close-up photo on the sign looked just like Erin & Nick’s Rico pup! We tried to wait until the bats flew off in mass at dusk, as we’d been told they would, but after an hour, we were hungry for dinner. We still saw a good showing of bats flying around in the dark.

      Fitzroy Island

      August 17, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Fitzroy Island is just off the coast of Cairns and so we spent the day here. Went to Nudey Beach and enjoyed the very steep walk to the lighthouse. Well worth the visit when staying in Cairns. It’s about a 45 minute ferry ride from Cairns and the water is amazing. Warm and clear.Read more

Fitzroy Island - im Great Barrier Reef

      August 13, 2015 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

      Fitzroy Island

      November 19, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

      Fitzroy Island !

      May 4, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Read more

      Fitzroy island day 1

      November 7, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Fitzroy island 🌴 is a beautiful place to chill and doing water activities. We stayed just for 1 night and 2 days, good enough, the view was breath taking. First day of our arrival on the island we had lunch in Foxy’s bar&grill while waiting for our room to be ready to check in. Then relaxing in pool before going hiking toward Nudey beach (Name only 😁). Back to the hotel getting ready for dinner in Zaphyr’s restaurant, really good food.Read more

      Fitzroy Island

      November 6, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

Fitzroy Island (originally Koba or Gabar or Goong-Gan-Jee) is a continental island offshore from Cape Grafton, 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. It is a locality in the Cairns Region. In the 2021 census, Fitzroy Island had a population of 85 people.
We visited to snorkel with turtles 🐢 and view coral as well as have a go at stand up paddle boarding.
Fitzroy island is a national park area and a sanctuary for the conservation and re introduction of turtles into the wild.
The highlight of the paddle boarding was Jen getting on her board backwards and not being able to paddle forwards because of the fins being at the front of the board instead of the back.
      Hilarious…
We also walked around to one of the more secluded beaches to Nudie Beach 🏖️.
