    T2 - Kakadu NP

    July 20 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Kakadu (Mardugal & Yellow Waters Cruise)

    July 18, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We deflated our tyres a bit for a slightly more pleasant return trip from Gunlom to the main highway and then continued north east to Mardugal.
Another short day's drive past enormous termite mounds meant we ended up at the campsite with plenty of time to find a nice shady spot and relax for lunch before heading 5 minutes up the road for a swim in the pool at Cooinda...we'd heard it was free access and no-one questioned us so we made the most of being able to cool off!
We had a pre-dawn start on Wednesday so we could enjoy the sunrise over Yellow Water Billabong (apparently named because of the yellow colour of the water early/late in the day from the ti tree leaves) on a river cruise. It was a great way to start the day! We had 12 sightings of crocodiles (super big ones!), saw thousands of birds (apparently Kakadu has one third of all birds found in Australia) including the iconic Jabiru, and plenty of wild pigs (a serious pest that is almost impossible to eradicate), brumbies and a lone wallaby! After the cruise we headed to Cooinda for the buffet breakfast that was included in our ticket price - needless to say this was a highlight of the day for the kids! Multiple servings later we headed back to the campsite and Marley had a much-needed nap while the rest of us relaxed outside.
We rounded out the day with another swim at Cooinda (it was super hot at the campground in the afternoons), had another fire created solely for the purpose of cooking and got all the 12 volt fans going for another warm night's sleep.
