    Kalgoorlie-Boulder

    January 26 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

    May 7, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today we visited the Hannans North Mine, which is not an active mine anymore but a tourist attraction. We learned a lot about the gold rush and the risks of the former days mining. Unfortunately we didn't find any gold there anymore, but it was a fun day!

    Kalgoolie

    May 14, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Arrived at 5 pm after 10 hrs on the road from Madura after leaving to a full moon and pink hue in the eastern sky. On roo alert , lots of eagles feasting on road kill - roos and a prime steer . Past three individual cyclists along the way. The Nullabor plain vegetation is mostly Acacia , Saltbush and Blue Bush. We started out on Australia's Longest Straight Road , 146 km. Angela at the wheel , immediately had 2 big red roo's jump across the road. Then encountered fog !
At Baladonna Roadhouse saw a piece of Skylab found from space mission in 1979. Nearer Kalgoolie trees were bigger , some species with copper trunks showing beneath shedding bark.

Big sleep and a sleep in ! Went the Big Pit look out. Doing a 1.5 hr Big Pit Tour tomorrow. Went to Gold Museum which we enjoyed and checked out Kalgoolie/Boulder.
At the museum we were lucky to see a silver exhibition on loan from the national gallery- one item on display was the Currie cup , awarded in 1862 to Scottish born John Lang Currie , awarded for the best sample of Australian grown wool . After leaving Scotland he purchased a property called Larra in the Western district -I wonder if there is a connection with our present day Lara , where he produced some of the finest merino wool in the country -Pic of the ornate silver cup complete with a sheep on the top. We also viewed one of the original Cobb and Co coaches from the area -pic attached .

    The Superpit and the Brothel

    May 9, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Today we had a look at the two most famous places in Kalgoorlie.

    The Goldmine.
Each dump truck (worth $4.4 million each) carries 250 tons of rubble out of the pit. Only one out of every 7 trucks carries the high grade rock, which after crushing and processing will yield about a golf ball sized lump of pure gold. The mine owns and runs 40 trucks and various other mammoth machines 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The tour was well worth it. The size and scale of the everything was huge.

    The Brothel
Questa Casa or The Pink House. Back in its heydey it had ten working rooms and as many girls who were kept very busy and apparently they made pots of money. It’s still a working brothel and the girls start at 7pm.

Now, the Questa Casa has just three rooms in use and there is only demand for two sex workers at a time. Prices are $150 for a half-hour and $280 for a full hour. (I thought you might like to know that vital piece of information).

To keep the brothel afloat, Carmel and her daughter (the madams) run daily tours for travellers. There was 18 in our group and at $25 a head that’s pretty good money for an hour or so.

We are in Kalgoorlie. Will be here for a few days while waiting for some stuff to arrive at the post office.

  • Day61

    Kalgoolie Boulder.

    August 26, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Last one to leave by a long chalk....the rest were away about 8am!
Lovely salmon gums line the roadside, and some of the gums have started flowering. I think we are probably a couple of weeks too early to see all the flowers in their glory. Apparently the season is late this year.
We stopped for lunch just after one, at another 24hr stop, which had it's own 'pet' magpie. She would sit on the table and catch the crumbs that Ian would throw.
We had another 200km to go, so we hit the road again after a pit stop.
Kalgoolie Centenial park is the next stop. It has flushing toilets Yeh! It really is a very pleasant place with lots of green grass. The flags in the park were at half mast because the Rt Hon Tim Fisher was being buried today.
