      Red Baron Flight - Sydney

      September 10, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Wow, what a day! I headed out West from Sydney this morning to an aerodrome where I was to fly in a sports biplane over Sydney Harbour. I was strapped into the biplane but, unfortunately, it wouldn't start. The pilot gave me 2 choices - come back when it's fixed (er, not much chance of that!) or have shorter flight in their Extreme Extra 320 stunt plane! Of course, I agreed to fly in this one (which happens to be the most extreme stunt aircraft in all of Australia). The flight over Sydney was just incredible, but the aerobatics we did over the sea just up from Bondi Beach were well, insane!Read more

      Sydney

      February 1, 2015 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We left Asia with a tear in one eye - because this part of the trip is over and cheap beer is no more - and a smile in the other as we now get to explore two new countries. We landed in Sydney on Friday and were picked up by Adam, the husband of Karsten's sister. At their home in Chipping Norton, a suburb of Sydney, we then waited for Frauke who had no clue that we were coming. We think the surprise was a great success!

Later that evening we went for her birthday dinner and had the perfect food to start eating Western food again: Pizza all you can eat! Last night we went out with our friend Michelle who worked with Karsten at IUCN. To our great pleasure she showed us hipster Sydney which has some great places to offer with great beer and amazing ice cream. With the "Hop Hog" we tried an award winning beer - the hoppiest we ever had! But to be able to go to social events we had to borrow clothes from Adam and Frauke, cause some places might have had objections against people with outdoor outfits ;).

Sunday we headed into the blue mountains and guess what we encountered in the beautiful Australian summer. A freakin hail storm!!

      work weekend

      November 12, 2016 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Thursday I arrived at the house of mohamad. I waited till they came home. At 22:00 they made some dinner for me. I slept in my car in their garden.

The next morning I had some decent breakfast and started to work. We had to sort all kind of boxes with michelangelous stuff. The idea was to sell this Sunday at a market. So today helping packing and Sunday selling stuff. The dinner was with thin bread like the bread you use for eating rotti. Together with stoved meat and unions. It was pretty good. Never had it And it's something else! They are so kind to me, I get everything, drinks, food. And as much as I want.

Saturday I fixed their lawnmower and did some cleaning in the shed and outside the shed. The dinner was raw meat, Some vegetables and some potatoes. With the meat you put some olive oil on it together with some raw onions and with the thin bread you pick some raw meat and eat it. It was pretty good, I didn't expect that. So hopefully I'm not getting sick from the raw meat :-P.

Sunday we woke up early to pack the ute and trailer for the market. I went together with the dad of mohamad. We put all our stuff on the tables. And a few people where coming. It wasn't that busy. We sold some stuff. But it was not successful enough. So we had to bring a hole lot of stuff back home. It was a fun day and learned a lot about selling products.

Afterwards mohamad and I cleaned in frons of the shed. I also managed to make my 2nd battery system working in my car! Another thing finished. In the evening I had also a goof conversation with the father of mohamad about religion and moslims.

Now only new engine oil and filter. And I have to finish the floor properly. Tomorrow I'll also help mohamad with some stuff.

      car fixed, check!

      November 10, 2016 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

This morning at 6:00 I woke up because of loud knocking on my car window. I opened my eyes and saw the police! Oh shit.. I opend the door and asked me if I was Allright. Then they said a neighbor has called because of noise pollution. Probably I was snoring to loud and now I gonna Get an ticket. Wft man, what were these guys thinking. Go fetch some criminals man!. Haha no just kidding, they asked me if I was Allright, and a neighbor called because he was worried. So they Said, go back to sleep. Crazy thing to start the day with. But I slept for a short time.

Finally they started to fix my powersteering of my car. I was asked by the mohamad (mechanic shop owner) to do some work and sell some stuff and get some money. So I got some work pants.

I helpt the another mechanic to get my back door fixed, he couldn't get it open. And I could, he looked surprised and thought I was joking. Haha so happy my door and powersteering is working!

Now refreshing oil, replace oil filter and airfilter. Get my dual battery system working and make the floor for the Matress better.

I went to Bunnings (kind of gamma) and I had to laugh about the power plugs and switches they use for power.

This evening I stayed @ the house of mohamad and had dinner over there, it was so nice! He has 5 children and needed a big house.

Tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday I'll be working.

      Sydney

      September 15, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I stayed at my friend in adelaide and we did some slack-lining. That was really cool! It's basically walking on a rope without holding anywhing.

In Tuesday evening I started driving with my car towards Sydney. I drove about 250km. The next day I drove to gulbourn. I had to stop there because my car started to run really crappy. So I slept there and started the car the next day and everything was fine. On my way to Sydney the car started to run crappy again. But after 10 minutes it was over again.

I drove all the way to my friend mohamad. And helped him with a job. The next day I met up with another friend and did a hike in the royal national park. That was really nice.

In the end of the afternoon I drove towards the city centre. Halfway my car started to run really crappy and I could barely get to a side road to get a safe spot.

There I called road assistance and they came after an hour and told me the pickup sensor from the Ignition was bad and had to replace it. The car still runs fine if it's cold but when it's warm then it gets problems. it was to far back so I got towed away for free because I was an premium member. Then I got an free cab to the the hostel I was staying (normally $140 for the taxi!).

      Drive to Sydney

      February 19, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

This morning I woke up later. And I left around 10 am. First went to 2 waterfalls. They were really nice to see. On the way in the car I could see the mountains where I drove yesterday on the Dirt bike.

I drove to the bigger city Albury to get some fuel. It was a few cents cheaper over there. And then I took off towards Sydney. When I turned up the main motorway I saw on my navigation I had to drive 500km straight! Damn that's a long road. And I didn't have cruise control, so I made my own cruise control :-P it did work okay but not perfect because you go uphill slower and downhill faster. But it's better than a deaf feet. On the way I saw an rocket car pass me! How cool is that? In Sydney I made my tea in some park, I was there around 6 and at 7 closed the park so I had to hurry a bit. I was just 18:59 outside the gates :-P

Then I went to my friend mohamad and I stayed there for the night.

In the end it took me 7 hours to drive to Sydney it was almost 700 km from wandiligong.

      Home

      May 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

All good things come to an end!
Home at last after a lovely last evening at a local taverna recommended by Christos the rooftop barman.
It’s a bit of an effort to get everything back into our bags but Royce is a packing genius.
A light breakfast and we say goodbye to the Acropolis.
Our driver is waiting right on time and we head to the airport. We have upgraded to business for the first leg- second leg was way too expensive. We access the skyserve lounge - it’s sparkly and has nice options for eating. The business class seat is amazingly spacious and the air stewards are greeting us by name and with a very beautiful rose champagne. The food and wine is delicious even though they run out of fish I am not disappointed by the poached lobster entree and the mushroom barley risotto.
We rush to our next gate after seeing if we can wrangle another upgrade - but lines are too long.
It’s a big plane and it takes a while to board and then we wait and wait and then taxi and then wait and the pilot says we have to get off and get in a different plane!
It’s a few hour delay and Royce and I explore the airport. Back on the plane and it’s a bit different from our previous experience however we have extra leg room and preordered vegetarian meals that are quite delicious. No more alcohol for me!
I actually sleep which is very unusual for me and I watch a couple movies.
Our bags are first off and our driver is waiting and it’s a quick ride home.
It’s lovely to be home. What a fabulous adventure we have had. Thanks Royce for being an amazing companion in travel and in life!
