Another free camp on the way west. This one is very popular as it is a short walk into central Mitchell and has amenities and water available. We were able to catch up on some washing while here.

After leaving “Old Cork” we came through Longreach a few days ago, a lovely, lively, neat and clean town, very stockman, cowboy orientated. Then onto Charleville, which was a bigger but a much quieter and tired looking town than Longreach.
We spent two days out on the Ward River, catching up on some washing and Dave tried his hand at fishing, but nothing jumped on his line.
We got to try out the “Jackstrap”, a small winch for lifting the tyres when the tyre monitor started beeping, telling us we had a flat. It worked a treat and made the job much easier and safer.
So here we are in “Mitchell” at the Neil Turner Weir, a free camp 4K out of town. Its a brilliant free camp, although we are amongst about 100 others also camping here, but it is a huge area, so we don’t feel overcrowded. We will head into town sometime today for a look at the town named in honour of Dave. 😜😹Read more

We walked the 4k into Mitchell from the campsite and found the little town pretty much deserted. Well it is Sunday after all 😆. The atmosphere of the town is pretty much no atmosphere. 4 or 5 pubs were operating here once upon time. But only two are open now and they both have for sale signs on them. After a wander around the main st of town we had a beer at one of the pubs before walking back to camp. But after chatting to people near us we heard that the they send a shuttle bus out to this camp most days to take people into town so they can shop and enjoy the hot mineral spa that is located in the aquatic center. The Great Artesian Spa

It rained last night and we woke to a partially cleaned car and caravan. A bit of a bonus although it made hitching up the caravan just a little more awkward with a bit of mud around.
We have mentioned previously the Great Artesian Basin which extends underground over more than 20% of Australia. Scattered around the Basin area are numerous hot water springs and spas with mineral water that has come to the surface. Some of the caravanners we have met have even made their travel theme to visit as many of these spas as they can, and they travel from spa to spa, to hot springs, to mud baths. What a life!
One such hot spring is at the central Queensland town of Mitchell which is on our route along the Warrego Highway. So we stopped here to go to the Mitchell Great Artesian Spa. Even though there was a little drizzly rain we still went into the spa and spent about an hour in the 37 degree mineral hot springs. It was very relaxing and therapeutic. In fact it was so relaxing that we forgot to take any photos!! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷‍♀️
We then drove down to the free camp at the Neil Turner Weir on the outskirts of Mitchell. Immediately we were amazed at how big was the camping area and how picturesque, and how many caravans were already there!! With so many caravans staying at this free camp you have to wonder how the caravan parks in Mitchell are faring.
We found a really nice very large campsite right on the banks of the Maranoa River. This will suit us very well for tonight.
While we were relaxing this evening a bus RV pulled up not far away and a couple got out and set up their camp. Peter noticed that they had a big sign in their front windscreen “BARBER”. Peter was needing a haircut so after a quick chat with our new neighbours a barber chair appeared along with hair cutting utensils, and Peter was having a haircut! It felt good to support fellow travellers and help them financially with their travels. After the haircut was finished Carolina announced Pete’s haircut was good and met with her approval!!Read more

Day 1 of The Madigan Fat Bike Challenge.

So started the journey to Birdsville then across to Mt Dare before we start the Madigan. Planning on getting to Mt Dare on the 8th July or so. First night at Neil Turner weir.
