      Tom Price & Newman

      Eigentlich planten wir auf unserem Weg in den Süden einen Zwischenstop in Tom Price und dem Karijini Nationalpark einzulegen.
      Tom Price ist die höchstgelegene Stadt Westaustraliens und wurde in den 1960er Jahren gegründet als Stadt für die Bergbauunternehmen der umliegenden Mienen.

      Ausgerechnet an diesen Tagen hat sich aber ein starkes Unwetter angekündigt, welches direkt unsere Reiseroute treffen wird. Erste Strassen mussten bereits gesperrt werden und der Park wurde vorsichtshalber auch geschlossen. So entschieden wir uns, gleich weiterzufahren, dass wir nach 10 Std. Fahrt Newman gerade noch erreicht haben.

      Newman wurde von einem Bergbaukonzern errichtet, welcher heute gleich am Stadtrand die weltweit grösste offene Miene für den Abbau von Eisenerz betreibt. Obwohl wir keine Miene besichtigen konnten, sind wir überwältigt, ab der grösse dieser Mienen, welche sich auch aus der Distanz erahnen lassen. Ganze Hügel werden aufgeschüttet und riesige Löcher ausgegraben. Auf der Strasse sind riesige Roadtrains unterwegs, welche die Mienen mit Maschinen und Material versorgen. Züge mit einer Länge von über 2,5 km bringen das Eisenerz dann zum nächsten Hafen.

      Da grosse Gewitter auch für die Nacht angekündigt waren, gönnten wir uns zum ersten Mal nach über zwei Wochen eine Übernachtung in einem Hotel. Und auch hier, ausser uns, alles Mienenarbeiter:innen in ihren orangen Westen. Frühstücksbuffet war bereits ab 04:00 geöffnet 😴      Read more

      Back to reality

      After breakfast we went to say goodbye to the nice Dutch couple who were travelling in their campervan. We spoke for a good hour about Australia, their travels, our travels and corona. Then it was time to leave Karijini National Park and make our way south.

      After some hours of driving we arrived in the mining town of Newman. After a short visit to the tourist information center ("I'm afraid there isn't much to do here or on the way to Perth" is an exciting conversation starter) we caught up with the news and people after having been without reception for a couple of days. The past 48 hours had felt like a much needed break from all the sadness and worries.

      Now however, it was time to face reality again. And reality currently doesn't make us (probably actually no one) happy. For us it is clear that sooner or later our world trip will stop. Lots of questions are popping up in our heads. For how long do we need to pause it? 6 months? 1 year? Is it even feasible to start a worldtrip part 2? How do we fill the time in between? How do we get an income? Does it make sense to apply for a job we would like to have? Or is that impossible and we should just try to find work in areas that are currently looking for people? Parcel delivery, supermarkets etc? Where do we live? All these things just seem so different from how we imagined this year to go. Despite it sounding overdramatic, for us it feels like our dream is falling apart and that left us sad, hopeless and slightly panicking.

      Eventually we went to the local camping, which like the one back in Tom Price was also mainly miner accommodation, with the difference that this one still accepted tourists as long as we declared ourselves healthy. Not knowing how long we'd still stay in Australia, hence also not knowing if we had enough clean clothes, we anyways made use of the free washing machine.

      Around sunset, we drove up to the Radio Hill as we were told it had a nice view over the town and surroundings. While driving there we noticed lightning in the clouds. No thunder however, and it didn't rain either. The views were pretty great. Back at the campsite all cockatoos had collectively decided the tree above our van would be their stay for the night. At first their loudness was a bit annoying but when they all started sleeping it became cute instead.      Read more

      Newman and surounds

      We woke up this morning to another blustery day. For the last few days there were 2 things you could be sure of, getting covered in red dirt and almost getting blown away by the wind, but we are still loving it. Because it was so windy we decided to hang around a bit and if the wind kept up we could stay another night. I went for a walk along the edge of the escarpment, along a track that you could easily drive but surprisingly no wheel marks and I found a spot that actually had small trees growing in it, so I assumed no one had driven along it in quite a while. In this day and age I thought that was amazing.
      When I arrived back the wind had died down so we decided to head into Newman. The drive in was quite scenic as we continued the drive through the Hamersley Ranges. There is not much to do in Newman apart from the Whaleback mine tour which sadly was booked out till Friday. So we headed up Radio Hill lookout and then headed South.      Read more

      Anna Plains Station to Newman

      An early start today - we got up 5.45 and had the camper packed up and were ready to leave just before 7am. It was an easy drive with little traffic and no other vehicle insight for the first 60 kms. Silvie prepared breakfast the night before and we were hoping to get some coffee at Sandfire Roadhouse but no luck …….instant only. So we just kept going until we reached Port Hedland around 11.30am for our coffee. Needless to say the breakkie was already gone by then 🤣.
      The drive from there was pretty boring until we reached the Hamersley Ranges ….sadly we also hit a traffic jam there, but at least that gave us some time to enjoy the scenery. We initially planned to make it past Karijini, but in the end kept going until Newman and decided that if we keep going like we have today we can make it back home by Sat night - one less day until we get to cuddle our doggies.
      We are camping tonight at the beautiful Newman carpark (also called caravan park) and Silvie cooked the beautiful Salmon we were given from some nice fellow campers at Anna Plains. It was absolutely delicious and certainly has been the highlight of our carpark camping experience. We have done 825km today. Silvie is very happy about the carpark situation as there was no need to reverse, has clear marking where to park and as a bonus it is levelled - win win win 😂

      Long haul today, 712k. Drove through Meekatharra where I was christened years ago.
      I think it was in the church in the photo. The hose was where my godmother Aunty Edith and Uncle Bill lived for many years. I missed the opportunity to catch up with my cousin so we kept going and made it to Newman for the night. Only 2 hours to Karijini tomorrowRead more

      Day 7: We headed out to The Capricorn for lunch, after we had a big walk in the morning.

      Back free camping again tonight. About 10ks North of Newman. Wikicamps have it down as North Newman rest area, but really just a parking bay with room to camp out the back.
      Got the fire roaring again tonight. Will pop a lamb casserole on the hot coals.

      Basically just heading south over the next few days to Morawa for the wildflower festival.      Read more

      We drove from Meekatharra to The Gascoyne River to camp yesterday. It was a nice camp by the river, but the flies were horrendous, so stayed in side most of the time and no photos were taken.
      Today, we drove to Newman and are bush camping just outside town. Newman is an iron ore town with large BHP mines. The town is quite tidy and we were able to do some shopping at Woolies. The lookout was worth driving to. The town is surrounded by mountains and is quite picturesque. There is a silhouette of Stan and Ella on the hill coming into town, Stan discovered the iron ore, and Ella was his wife. The correllas that we saw have a problem with the red dirt and are red in colour.Read more
