    Broomfield Track

    August 17, 2017 in Australia

Heading back towards civilisation now, but first we had the coast road from Cooktown, through Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest. Jaw droppingly beautiful landscapes, deserted beaches, the bluest of seas and the best fun 4WD track so far - hair pin bends, 1 in 10 inclined, driving through creeks.
So much to see that we didn't have time to stop and do. Of all the places we have been, I think this might be the place that we would all want to return to.

    Great Barrier Reef

    August 18, 2017 in Australia

What a day! No complaints about getting up early for this one! 90 minute trip to the Outer Reef, and then three 'dives' at three different locations. We hired an underwater camera, but photos don't do it justice. Angel fish, parrot fish, zebra fish, rainbow fish, soldier fish, barracuda, reef sharks and giant clams. Fish of every colour and pattern. Only sad thing was to see how badly bleached the coral is. Not the amazing colours that I remember, but the fishes were incredible. We are totally exhausted after nearly 4 hours in the water!Read more

    August 19, 2017 in Australia

Late breakfast and a lazy morning after the excitement yesterday - Leila slept for 13 and a half hours and even then I had to wake her up! Then, a quick trip up the beautiful Captain Cook Highway to the outskirts of Cairns and Skyrail - three cable cars that took us 350m up the escarpment to Kuranda. Fantastic views over the sea and the coastal plains, and gliding over the top of the rainforest was pretty cool. Quite glad we didn't go for the car with the see-through floor though!
One other good thing - Leila lost her crocodile cap somewhere in central Australia and we had trawled the internet and searched every shop to try and find her another one. No luck anywhere - until we spotted one in the Skyrail shop today. One very happy Boo!

    Kuranda Scenic Railway

    August 19, 2017 in Australia

What goes up, must come down .... We did the return journey down from Kuranda on a narrow gauge railway completed in 1891. It took 12 years to complete and they moved 231 cubic metres of dirt in making it. Best bit definitely the bridge across the gorge with a waterfall falling underneath the bridge, and looking back you could see the back of the train curling round. Makes the Kings Cross line look a bit tame!Read more

    Sunset Sail

    August 21, 2017 in Australia

Our last night in Queensland, and we wanted to do something special. We went for a late afternoon / evening sail on a catamaran, out towards Green Island and back. Kids had great fun on the beanbags at the front, getting splashed - it was quite a swell! Craig was in his element, and I had an ice cold beer and watched the sunset!Read more
