We limped in to Venus Bay Caravan Park to assess the damage a bit more. At least it didn't look any worse than what we saw yesterday. The van park was pretty basic but at least offered power and water. Well, water flow was so slow we had to fill our tanks and then use the pump. Oh, and the power went off for our second day so we were back on gas and battery. 🤷‍♂️
Found a lovely headland walk though around South Head that passed a couple of hours.
Next day we headed off to explore the Talia Caves that were a few kms south. The Woolshed Cave was spectacular but the path in was too sloping for our liking so no photo looking out from inside. A little further along the coast was some extraordinary rock pools.Read more

Eyre Peninsula. Venus Bay

Our first stop on the Eyre Peninsula was Venus bay. A tiny town consisting of a shop/tavern and a small caravan park in a beautiful bay with a stunning cliff top walk.

Close by was Port Labatt seal colony and the amazing Talia limestone caves.Read more

Arrived in Venus Bay after a drizzly morning. Caravan Park is right on the waters edge. Nice walk around south Point on coastline. Picked up some really nice curries from Shell servo in Streaky Bay before we left. Nice drive out to Tahlia Cave about 20kms south. Saw the cave which was weathered limestone and "the tub"- no Lloydy they haven't named a place after you!. It would've been a cave but the roof had collapsed. Finished the arvo with another walk around South Point and then the scones and coffee deal at the kiosk where my newly acquired snap swivels fell out of my pocket and straight through the wooden floor boards. Toasting fork to the rescue and after a bit of mucking around the $2.40 swivels were saved. Phew!!Read more

“Uncle” John’s old shack at Venus Bay (just gone out of the family) - trees were planted by John. Many family summer holidays were had here. Views over the jetty and also on the ocean coast and the bay entrance.Read more

Nullarbor to Venus Bay

The plan was to head to Poochera but when my cousin Anthony wrote out of the blue to see where we were and to say he was at Venus Bay it was perfect timing.

Either way it was gonna be one of our longer stints at just over 5hrs but our arrival at Venus Bay was pushed out by a sizeable stop at Head of the Bight. There we saw, by my count, 7 Southern Right Whales (including mum and calf) and innumerable Humpbacks jumping and breaching off towards the horizon.

We arrived at Venus Bay just in time to catch Anthony at reception as he was heading for a fish at the jetty & then we saw him again later that night for a beer and a chat. It had been so many years since I’d seen Anthony, I was so glad we could catch up on this trip (and we all loved his dog Bruce).Read more

Streaky Bay

Arrived at Streaky Bay via Venus Bay. We are staying in a bush camp owned by the same people who owned the bush camp at Elliston. This bush camp is right on the beach front with views of Streaky Bay. Not the best beach we have been to, lots of rocks and pebbles and very little sand. Celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary at Drift Restaurant in Streaky Bay, a beautiful seafood platter and a glass of Chardonnay.
We had a day trip to Point Labatt and Port Sceale. We saw the sea lions at Point Labatt, the largest colony of sea lions in the world. We went on to see Murphy's haystacks, large boulders that stand on their own, and are awesome. Our last day here was spent watching dolphins frolicking and kayaking in the ocean.Read more

Another day in Paradise

We went to Talia caves this morning. They were about 20 km away. Another stunning location. Wild wild seas and pristine beaches. I wonder how long SA can keep these places untouched, and largely unknown. The caves where down a staircase of 98 steps, and the most notable thing was a ?bee swarm on the roof. The rocks leading to the cave were polished by waves, with channels cut through by their force. Magnificent.
This afternoon we walked along the Southern coastal walk. It was 2.2km long and hugged this crumbling cliff top. Heading out of Venus along the path was calm, with two dolfins feeding below us, and then we rounded the corner into the wind and huge waves. It was quite a dramatic walk. Ian got talking to our neighbour about his collapsible boat, which he had been out fishing in all day. He had caught a ton of fish in it.Read more

We were given a prime spot in Venus Bay, and parked by the ocean. Then we walked down to the pier. One guy at the very end was catching Salmon, Tommy's, and whiting. The sun was shining, and although strong winds where forecast for later it was perfect when Ian fetched his rods and went fishing. He did catch a tiddler, but rest was weed.. we went to Port kenny for some grog, and had a drink on the pub
The woman behind the bar was a dog groomer and owned 4 salons, but she had no idea what type of dog Frankie was. She thought he was a bitsa. She took a photograph to put on the pubs web page. Ian was talking to a guy who was an abalone diver. As his father had been before him. Fish and chips tonight from the CP. Whiting for me Fish basket for Ian. Crap TV reception, and strong winds tonight.Read more
