    Charters Towers Day 2

    August 17, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Went out to the Venus Mill for our tour, Very interesting and informative. With a good talk about the history of the battery and displays with holograms etc. The Battery is of national cultural significance as the largest surviving Battery relic in Australia and the oldest surviving Battery in Queensland.
Constructed in 1872, it was a public or custom mill in its prime and became a State Battery in 1919 to provide ore crushing facilities for small miners long after other mills had closed. It ceased commercial operations in 1973 after a century of service.
After the tour had a look through a few shops and then drove out to the weir on the Burdekin River, Returning to the town we drove up Tower Hill. Went to the Tors Drive-In, one of the few remaining drive in's left in Australia, has bee operating since 1966.
