      Breakfast vibes

      November 17, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Now, I've realised I am a morning person. I prefer to wake up early and get out and about before the day really begins. I was placed on breakfast which means I started at 6,30am, I was looking forward to it. It was not interesting.

At the Hilton if we had anything less than 80people in for breakfast, it was dull. I had 12 on Wednesday and 15 on Thursday. I was bored to say the least.

Once done with breakfast at 12, I also get to help with lunch until 3pm. Cause why not. It was not fun either. 2 very easy shifts in the end so cant complain too much. The sunrise is also very pretty outside my room.

On Thursday I also managed to make an ok looking coffee. It is the best pattern I have managed so far! I'm on breakfast again next week so I'm gonna keep trying and teach myself how to barista.

      Writing mania

      November 23, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I had to Google how to spell nephew. I tried everything. I thought maybe it was a 'ue' not an 'ew', I couldn't figure out if it was 'ph' or 'f'. And one point I thought maybe there was a silent 'a'. Why is english so HARD!!!

Today was a day for relaxing. After coming back from the sunrise at the beach I waited for someone from the RSA to call me so I could finally finish that thing. After the most awkward conversation of my life, I passed. I now have both my RSA and my RSG! Bomb, it only took me a month!!

From there I went for a little swim because it wasnt yet that hot out. Had a chat with the cleaner at the site. She is honestly one of the nicest people I've ever met.

Then went to the coffee shop and wrote. Two hours later, I had nearly 3,000 words and a sore neck. Took a break to eat something because I'd been awake for 6hours and it was time for lunch! Yes, I ate lunch at 10,30. Wild. And went right back to writing. A further 2,000 words and I had a headache.

Got kicked out of the cafe at 1pm as they closed which was annoying cause then I went back to my room and suffered. Whatever illness the others have, I think I got aswell. So felt like death for ages, tried not to fall asleep because doing that would mean I didnt sleep tonight. So continued to suffer alone.

Made some food for dinner. Basically just cooked a bunch of veg and stuck it all together in a pan. Not very inventive but I think itll make a good pasta sauce as well as soup which I had it as tonight because I could not be bothered. I also used two pans, a small achievement but I'm proud of myself.

      ITS CHRISTMAS!!!

      November 3, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Yes that is correct, we did put the Christmas decor up today. I was very proud of my tree, understated and pretty. It's also really bright so theres that.

I spent the morning moving into my official room. It is a shared accom so there is two single beds. I surprisingly prefer the single bed, it feels more comfy. There is the same amount of storage but as it is half the price of the double and odds on I wont have to share, I'm happy. The guy who was here before was here for 6months and he never shared in that time. The demand is not high at all and, for me at least, I'd have to wait for another female to come through to share with. I dont think I'd care if it were a dude but we'd have to both sigh off on it and even then the likelihood of someone coming through is super low.

Work was very slow today. I spent most of it decorating and cleaning. It's kinda funny because a couple of the girls have spent my last two shifts running around d stressed because theres so much to do. But if they stopped for a second they'd realise there really isnt and they are just trying to do everything at once. Perks of working in somewhere twice the size I guess, you learn how to prioritize better and keep things calm for the billionaire guests.

Today definitely went a lot better than yesterday. Because I wasnt shadowing anyone, I had more freedom to do things my way and figure it all out on my own. Had a couple sticky situations with the till and not understand its layout, but I know now so it won't happen again. I am also getting better with the lingo which is good. I spent the evening dinner shift running the bistro alone with just one other girl. She's underage so I was alone on the bar and taking orders, all she did was run food and clean. So that was super nice, got to learn it all and speak with customer properly which I haven't done in forever.

Customers still suck obviously. Had one guy inform me and the manager that the food we served them was no better than the 'dogs dinner'. Tbat dog must be living with mum, the ribs were unacceptable apparently. He had to excuse himself and left his wife to deal with it, because it was all too much for him. People are weird.

Ended up finishing late because the manager instead of showing me how to close decided to go home. She sprouted some bs about full time/ casual pay and clocking out on time. She is also the person who chose not to come in yesterday leaving them short staffed with 3 newbies at dinner. So she is a delight, just going to try and stay on her good side and leave the others too the gossiping. I wont be there long enough to get involved.

Then headed back home, had some pizza from work. Never going to turn down free food. And had some timtams for dessert. I know, I'm so healthy, but free food!

I also found a song that encapsulates my NaNo so downloaded that and with listening to it on repeat. It's also a great song that I completely forgot about so yay.

      I clearly hate myself

      November 28, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

So I may or may not have just cried over my own story.

I've mentioned it a few times, particularly recently as it is NaNoWriMo. But I write, very badly and with little success. As mum knows well from the amount of times I have spoken about something religiously for like a week and then never mentioned it again. I have never once finished a story, always abandoning them cause I got bored, they were taking too long or i ended up writing the entire thing in my head and never on paper.

Today I finished my story. And I cried. Not because I finished it, no relief would have been a better reason for such ugly crying. No instead I cried over the end. I was writing it, crying.

So now I have a complete story with an ending I hate and love. I change a bunch of things half way through it, so it needs serious editing but the plot is down. Except the ending. I have that but I hate it.

I am a lover of romance and fantasy, and I dislike sad endings. So what did I do? I wrote a sad ending.

I have no clue what I am going to do tomorrow. I will probably end up writing a different, happy ending. As I have a plan for a happy ending I just chose not to write that.

So other than that, my days been great.

This last week has been difficult, lots of ups and downs. But I feel a little better today. Hopefully tomorrow I will feel better again still. My cold was worse this morning but is ok now sl that's nice. And it was overcast and drizzly all day so it was only about 27° out which makes such a difference when it's been 30°+ all week.

Who knows what will happen tomorow, I don't have a plan for it. But I feel as though I will be woken up at some point tonight. My roommate was supposed to arrive at 2pm today, which was 7hrs ago. I have no clue what happened so that isnt helping my anxiety over a stranger moving in all that much. But meh. Today has been an emotional roller coaster.

      New year

      January 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Well it's been an eventful few days.

Ended up getting sick my final day in Adelaide. Was very concerned I would end up not making my flight but I braced myself and did not have fun, but made it. The flight ended up being 1.5hrs delayed, so o did the only thing that can be done when waiting for something. I took a nap in the sun. Felt a thousand time better after. And before anyone worries about my safely/ stuff while asleep. I was in the corner, next to the gate desk under CCTV with staff right next to me.

Arrived back in Mission Beach, realised how much I want to not be here anymore. So very glad to be switching it up soon.

Work is not something I am going to discuss. I have had enough. That is all that is needed to be said.

I am slowly counting down the days before I leave and will be spending my free time planning my next steps and figuring everything out.

I ended up rewriting the second half of my story. I dont know if I like it. But I dont hate it. I dont really like the original way but this isnt right either. So that's annoying cause now I'm not sure what to do about it. There was also a massive bug. Ergh!

Somehow I was watching tv yesterday and fell asleep, at 5pm. Ended up waking up again at like 9pm and being super confused. Had the intention to get some sort of food, feel asleep again. My alarm for 5,30am woke me up the second time. I slept for 12hrs, completely unintentionally. That is how hard my weekend has been!

Today I took down the final Christmas decorations from work. Yes 5 days after new year, that's just how it be. And found this tinsel. I put this up two months ago outside. It was red all over when I put it up, the bits in the sunlight turned gold. A clear example of why you should not put anything outside here. It's crazy how strong the sun is.

Beyond that, not much is happening. I'm just ticking down the days. I realised that the only part of Mission that I am going to miss (other than the people), is the cafe. So that's interesting, really shows my priorities!

      Days off

      November 9, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Tried to wake up early, failed. Work up at 7,30 instead. I had a lovely oaty breakfast before hitting the beach.

This beach is just insane. It is about 9km long so theres no breaks, no rocks, just pure sand right round the headlands on either side. I tired my best to walk some of it, figured after 20mins I must be at least near south mission. Nope, still in Wongaling. It's crazy because its tiny in population but the town extends down one road along the coast so its really long.

Did a spot of sunbathing before going for a dip. The water was warm and the floor was sandy, it felt all wrong. But was really nice. I didn't go too far as it was high tide so the beach is very flat meaning that to go deep I would have had to go a good hundred meters from shore. Which on my own was not something I was willing to do.

I then headed back and did some more admin stuff, but I did it beside the pool, so it wasn't too bad. Then just headed back into my aircon room to escape the sun and relaxed.

At 6 I met Kahan at the resort, we had a schooner (what a stupid size) and got the courtesy bus into north mission. We met James there and I had a surprisingly good night with them. They are chill, older as well so no teenage boy adolescent BS which I was thankful for. They did talk about video games a lot so I got bored a made friends with a local instead. Genuinely no clue what his name was but he'd done some travelling and had some good stories and tips for asia. The more I speak to people over here, the more I want to visit asia. Because it's so much closer here than it is to UK, a lot more people have travelled their. Most of them are extravellers, so have so many stories to tell.

Gracie then picked us back up in the courtesy bus, which was great. Headed back to the resort and had a few more there. I didn't because I know my limit, Kahan is only just 18 so he did not. He definitely has a headache this morning. Spent some time hanging out there in the gaming room. As employees we arent allowed to gamble on premises at any times so I mostly just tried to figure out how on earth it all worked. Spoiler alert I did not succeed.

As someone who had never even bought a lottery ticket, all of this stuff is very foreign to me. I think the closest I have even been to gambling is one time we were at an event that overlooked a dog racing ring or something. Mum gave me 20p to bet, if I won I got 40p of I lost, I got nothing. I remember deciding not to gamble because I was happy with my 20p. But I have been placed in gaming and sports this weekend so they are going to throw me in the deep end and let's hope is swim. I fully intend to not do anything without someone present for a while on the first shift. If they win and I give them the wrong money, I am so screwed. But we'll see what happens. One perk is if I mess it up, they'll never make me do nights in gaming!

Anyways, had a very nice night. Everyone at work is welcoming, just next time I'll try and drag a girl along too so I'm not listening to video games all night. At least I now know the differences between playstation and xbox, and why now is the time to buy an xbox not playstation. As I said before, full of useless knowledge.

      First day back in reality

      November 2, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

I started my first shift at work at 12 today. So woke up, did my NaNo and some stretches for a bit then headed off to work.

As always, being the newbie sucks. I know what I'm doing, but not in this bar. I don't know where anything is, I dont know how to till works or the procedure with the tables. I hate being the newbie.

But everyone was super nice and welcoming. I think I annoyed them a little but all newbies annoy people so hopefully it's all good. There is another newbie aswell, Sarah. She has clearly been doing this longer, and it was her second shift, so she was a bit intimidating but there we go.

The job its self is pretty easy. There is no floor team just bar, so we do a bit of everything which is nice. There are three bars, bistro, gaming and sports. I will be stationed in bistro this week as that is my experience. It is essentially a restaurant with a bar in it, nothing special but it's the only place in an hours drive that's any good so it can get very busy. We had two functions on last night but as I'm new I didn't have to deal with them which is a plus. The gaming bar has all the machines and things in it, as well as the ticket lottery machine I think. As I have zero experience there, I tried to steer clear of it. The sports bar is essentially a pub. They have the same food as bistro, but have various games and races playing as well as a betting till. Again, zero experience so I only ran food for that section. Their events rooms are practically none existent, there is one. So that's a plus as the same team does that aswell.

Overall it was a good shift. A little stressful for the others because it was busy and I couldn't do much except run food and clean, but ok. We also get a 30min break, and 50% off food from the kitchen which is lovely. We also get a discount card for Woolworths so will be getting that asap as it's the only food place locally and I'll take a 5% discount any day.

I have been scheduled in 12-9 until sunday which will be interesting. Two months of not working then 5 back to back 9hr shifts. I will be dead by monday but it's so I can learn asap and stop being a pain to the others. And hopefully understand more of the slang. I few times I had to ask them to repeat because I had genuinely no clue what they had said. I also now have to learn the sizes of all the glasses and different uses. UK is simple, pint or half. Here, confusing. Bottle, pot, scooner, pint, jug. There is also little and talls for spirits and soft drinks. Why do they need so many!

Walked back to my room and spotted the moon again. It's a really bad photo but it is now half full, and rotated clockwise so now sits half way between sideways and upside down.

      Fridays

      November 19, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Yes that is my only photo of today. But today has not been great so theres that.

I woke up at 7am and could not get back to sleep. So got up and went for a walk in a direction I haven't gone yet. Discovered a fish and chip shop so might get a chippy next week. Then headed back to find woolies which doesn't open till 8am so grabbed myself an iced coffee and a muffin for breakfast and waited. Because it was so early it was only 28° so was nice to sit outside in the shade and not melt.

Then did my shopping and headed back to my air conditioned room. Genuinely not sure what I did now. Just vibed in the cool air and rested.

I started work at 3pm and honestly why. Fridays are seriously busy between 2 and 6 so have only one person on the sports bar, sure why not. Anyways was not pleased. Come 6pm Eloise arrived to help and it was so dead. Was bored again for a bit before helping bistro. Then went to the function to help there.

No clue what happened while I was at the function but I came back and there are had been a huge argument between two of the staff. As a result the guy closing had walked out. So guess who got to work until 4am to cover him. Yep, me. Started at 3pm finsihed at 4,30am. Was not fun, genuinely thought I was going to fall asleep at 2am but made it.

      Saturdays

      November 19, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After being woken up a thousand times, I finally got up at 11am. Probably ended up having only like 5 or 6 hrs sleep which is not enough but there we go. I had to decide last night which was more important, sleep or food. I chose sleep and as a result was starving so made myself a lunch and breakfast at the same time. Top tier, highly recommend.

Tried not to fall asleep before heading to work again for 3pm. When I arrived found out the guy who threw the hissy fit wsnt coming in again. So instead of covering him, they just switched one of the people already on to close. This would have been an issue even if we weren't already a person down. One of the other quit this week with no warning so we were down 3 members of staff. 4 people to run three bars on a saturday night. Who thought this was a good idea.

Anyways, I worked both sports and gaming bars while the other three dealt with the bomb site that was bistro and the kitchen. It had been busy all day, and chefs can be fairly temperamental on a good day so was very glad I was away from all that drama. All in all a pretty good shift. Busy, but not chaotic for me and I got to close down early cause it died at 9,30 which is a plus.

      Weekends

      November 12, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

So it turns out working behind a bar is the same in whatever country you are in.

I have been stationed in the public/sports bar the last two days and believe me when I say it is the easiest thing. Everyone is ordering schooners for the most part, or cocktails. So get easy pouring beer and fun cocktails to make.

It was super busy on Friday. I arrived and didn't stop for about 3hrs, then it went dead for the next two, but at 9pm it seriously picked up. Everywhere else locally (I say locally, within a 30min drive), closes around 9pm/10pm. But not us, we close at 4am. So anyone out for the night calls it then or comes to us for the remainder. Great as it kept us busy and the time went fast. Not great as I was supposed to finish at 12 and didn't clock out till 1.

Today however was dead all day. Well it was sort of busy between 3pm and 5pm, but then it went dead. At 6pm they asked me to work Bistro, so I was cleaning tables and running food for 3hrs until I was finally allowed on break. My supervisor had the never to ask me why I wasnt on break, while I was doing two things and there was a queue at the bar. Genuinely don't understand some people.

Later on when Bistro closed, I went back to Sports and was reay bored again. A few people came in later and I had them make me look like and idiot infront of the same supervisor as earlier. After I had to explain that I did know why I was doing, I was trying to test them as they came in drunk and I wasn't sure if I should serve them. Apparently the supervisor wouldn't have served them except for the fact that one of the group worked with us. I still think they shouldn't have been served, but it's not my call so there we go.

I finally was allowed to begin closing at 11,30 and was out by 11,45 which is lovely. I felt bad for my colleague as he was covering a shift and a large group arrived just as I was leaving. He is in for a long night, a shift I hope I never have to do.

I realised I had some eggs left so made myself a nice breakky this morning and dinner was what I got from the function. The food from that was inedible so I made food when I got back. It is astounding how often the function food is beyond vile. But it is free so it's not too bad. I also tried to capture the sky again. The moon lights the edges of the clouds beautifully but I am unable to capture the full effect with my phone camera.
