Woody Point Beach

A stop over site for one night, as we could not get into the Scarborough Holiday Park until Saturday.
After setting up in the morning we took a 6 k walk around the Woody Point headland into Redcliffe where we briefly visited the Information Centre. On the way we wandered along the Woody Point pier to observe the fishermen and women. There was an abundance of small herring visible from the pier but the fishermen were all after different fish, either snappers or Australian mackerel. There was definitely some mackerel about as every now and then a surface frenzy arose where the herring were jumping out the water to escape the predators.
There was a very large chap with his wife at the end of the pier with 9 rods out - she looked totally disinterested in the whole affair. After about 10 minutes he got a bite and pulled in a long fish with a long sharp beak and loads of razor sharp teeth - it looked like a Garfish but was a Barred Longtom - not a flicker of interest from wifey.
Other guys were out with nets looking for Red Mullet below the pier which they would hope to ensnare with a deft throw.Read more
