      A wet ride to Salzburg

      Passau to Salzburg was going to be a two day ride or one veeery long day if I went for it. It started off decently dry, but got more and more wet as I went. Wet, muddy and cold! I opted for a hotel in Salzburg, threw the (wet) towel in and hopped a train the last stretch! I spent the last day and a half hanging out in Salzburg and drying out all my equipment in the hotel. This morning I’ll be heading to an adjacent valley with a nice camp site by a little river, a sauna, pool and all the amenities! Also the salt mine tour that I want to check out is right next door! As long as I set up camp before it starts raining, let it rain! I’ve got a few hours of dry this morning, so I better start pedaling!Read more

      A small snippet of Salzburg

      Again we’ve been a bit slow on the posts over the last few days. Probably not a bad thing as it must mean we are busy or too relaxed haha. Salzburg was lovely and I would definitely go back there again if we ever return to Austria! Although I feel like we covered a bit of ground in the time we were there. We visited the house where Mozart was born and spent the first few years of his life (was fascinated to hear about his very talented sister who I believe was overshadowed by her brother!), went to Mirabell Gardens (a little bit more colourful in summer I assume but very pretty!). We saw a fantastic interactive exhibition about some historic musical instruments, caught the funicular up to the Fortress Hohensalzburg and then walked everywhere else we could. The NYE vibe was a bit tamer than Amsterdam 3 years ago although there were still fireworks going off everywhere. We had a great view of the festivities from one of the pedestrian bridges on the river. The weather was perfect and we felt like we had a chance to relax a bit on the last day of our stay.       Mit vielen, mit ein, ganz allein

      Die Woche Hochkönig war wie immer wunderbar, aber irgendwann geht alles vorbei und meine Reise geht wieder weiter. Eigentlich war das Ziel ja nur bis hier hin zu kommen, aber jetzt habe ich den Spaß daran gefunden und die Zeit weiter zu machen.

      Unterwegs habe ich einen Termin für das nächste Bewerbungsgespräch am 16.04 ausgemacht und bis dahin werde ich die Zeit auf dem Rad nutzen...

      Wie nicht anders zu erwarten, habe ich mal wieder großartiges Wetter am Tag meiner Abreise und die Sonne brennt genau so wie meine Bremsen bei der Abfahrt bis Bischofshofen. Dort wird eine Radpumpe und Kettenöl gekauft, damit ich noch ein bisschen Pflege betreiben kann bevor mein Zug kommt.

      Zug? Ja genau. Es geht erstmal zurück nach München und die Strecke von Bischofshofen bis Gollingen war auf dem Hinweg das schlimmste Stück, also werde ich das Abkürzen und stattdessen mehr schöne Strecke fahren. In München trifft sich dann die ganze Familie bis Sonntag und dann geht es für mich in die letzte Etappe der Radreise... Witzigerweise will die Autokorrektur ständig Raserei aus der Radreise machen 😁

      In Salzburg treffe ich mich wieder für eine kurze Tour mit Walter an der Burg. Sehr schöne Aussicht von oben, sehr sehr Steil da mit dem Rad hoch zu kommen. Die Leute haben mich sogar angefeuert 🎉 Bis Freilassing habe ich also noch etwas Gesellschaft und wir Palavern so vor uns her.

      After delicious Apfelstrudel and hot chocolate on this cold spring day, we took the fenicular up to Fortress Hohensalzburg. Views from the top are amazing, over the historic town, and to the south towards the Alps. The rain eventually caught up with us on the way back to the train station, but we were grateful it held off for most of the day.Read more

      Next on the agenda for this morning was a visit to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Hohensalzburg Castle looms over the Old City of Salzburg from its lofty position on top of Mount Festungsberg, and the easiest way up is in the funicular. It was built in 1077 under the orders of Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein and later enlarged at the end of the 15th century. This is the largest, fully preserved castle-fortress in Europe, measuring 250 meters long and 150 meters wide. It was intended as a retreat for the Bishops and Prince-Bishops of Salzburg.

      In order to get supplies and building materials to the mountain top an elementary “Reisszug" or cable car was devised in 1495 and it functioned until 1504. This is considered the oldest operating funicular in Europe.

      In more recent history the castle fortress was used as a prison for Italian prisoners of war in World War I and later in 1934 it held Nazi activists, before Austria was invaded by Germany. The history of this place is so interesting and we got to walk through the spaces, see a collection of historic weapons and other interesting artefacts, and climb the tower to admire the views of Salzburg below. Being it is off season not everything was open to see but what we did get to see was impressive. I am so glad we finally had good weather to get up here.      Read more

      Mit dem Bus ging es in die Stadt. Für uns, die täglich mindestens 20 000 Schritte gehen, sind alle Sehenswürdigkeiten fußläufig. Für alle anderen hat Salzburg ein tolles Busnetz für 5€/ 24h. Mit der Salzburgkarte kann man alle öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel nutzen und jedes Museum besuchen. Mit Inka an der Seite müssen wir unsere Urlaube mit etwas weniger Kultur planen. Ohne Anhang kann man hier die tollen Geschäfte und historische Orte besser genießen. Wir haben jedoch unsere Wahl getroffen🐶😘
      Mit der Zahnradbahn ging es in Windeseile hoch hinaus auf die Burg. Hier probieren wir eine österreichische Besonderheit: Salzburger Nockerln. In der Auflaufform sind über Vanillesoße und roter Grütze drei Welten aus Eischnee gezaubert. Das alles ist gebacken. Also eine warme, zu süße Kulinarik vom Profibäcker. Für uns eine einmalige Erfahrung. Die Portion hätte wahrscheinlich auch für 4-6 Personen gereicht. Es sieht jedoch sehr schön aus!
      Die Burg selbst ist beeindruckend in ihrer Größe und mit ihren Panorama-Aussichten.
      Wieder im Zentrum sind Markplatz, Mozartplatz, ineinander greifende Gassen mit Geschäften und Gaststätten sehr gut auch bei großer Hitze zu erkunden, da durch die Enge viel Schatten entsteht. Besonders eindrucksvoll ist ein Besuch im Dom. Wunderschön. Ich habe hier versucht mit 360 Grad Bildern euch die Stimmung einzufangen. Leider kann die App das hier nicht darstellen.
      Um die Ecke befindet sich der Mirabellenpark. Der ist durch seine tolle Bepflanzung berühmt.
      Leider haben wir zu wenig Essen für das Kind eingepackt. So mussten wir 20 min zum Fressnapf laufen. Mit Inka dauerte es dann 1h. Zwischendurch dachte ich sie kollabiert. Mehrere Zwangspausen mussten eingelegt werden. Auf dem Rückweg nutzen wir dann den Bus.
      Als letzter To-Do-Punkt auf unserer Liste stand Sushi. Wir haben hier ein Restaurant gefunden, welches einen aus den Socken haut. So habe ich Sushi noch nie gegessen. Asiatische Cocktails mit Koriander, Erdnuss-Nussöl und anderen Spezialitäten aus der Küche ließen uns staunen. Unser Geheimtipp: Nagano!      Read more

      Treffpunkt mit der Gruppe um 13.30 Uhr:
      Fahrt mit der Felsenbahn zur Festung Hohensalzburg & Rundgang in den Festungsgebäuden, danach Spaziergang zum Wasserspiegel (Wasserwerk) der Stadt Salzburg.

      We lucked out on our hotel and ended up with a very cool apartment on the top floor at Das Grune. It was about 20 min walk to the platz. We first went to Mirabelle gardens where they filmed the Do-Re-Mi scene for the Sound of Music. Inside the palace it is decorated extravagantly with many marble statues on a staircase, and a very nice music room with gold embellishments on the ceiling and walls. We found the Pegasus fountain outside Mirabelle gardens. Next we went to St. Andra church. We then went to Kapuziner Koster, which was on top of a hill and started by a monk monastery. Quite a climb. Next we went to Saint Sebastian Church which was also impressive. We had a good lunch at Alter Fuchs which means old fox. Greg had the farmer's soup and Kristy had cordon bleu...both very good.. after lunch we went to St. Johannes Church and the Residence Platz where there is a very large impressive fountain We then went into the Dom Salzburg Church. You have to pay €5 to get in, but it's worth every cent. It is a baroque architecture. Highly decorated and impressive church. Next to it is the Franciscan church that was started around 1100 AD. We then walked back to our hotel room. Greg walked across the street and got a couple of pizzas at a place called Pizza Joy. Lol...It was joyful for the owner because they gave us a tablespoon of tomato sauce and three shreds of cheese. It's true. It was a good day. Tired feet. Slept well!Read more

      Fortress Hohensalzburg, St Peters Square

      We got up and had breakfast in the room, and then walked down to the central part of Salzburg hugging the castle wall. We went up to Hohensalzburg Castle. It was a very long steep climb up from the city, especially right where you enter the castle. When we got there we noticed there was a cog railway that ran up and down the hill that would have been a good idea to take because by the time we walked from our hotel through the city up to the castle and the steep entrance. Then we walked all around the castle inside and walked around for the afternoon. Our feet were beat. Purchase the full tour ticket to see all areas of the castle, it is only €4 more.
      You can also buy these tickets online and it is less expensive online. We then toured the castle and went into the museum. Impressive collection of medieval armor weapons and WW I Austrian military uniforms and weapons. There are portions of the castle where they show restoration work and expose the old walls which is very cool. The interior chamber for the archbishop is amazingly decorated, and there is a tile stove for heating. Heating one of the two rooms was heated by the most ornate stove in Europe. All in all it takes about 3 or 4 hours to see everything in the castle and there are lots of stairs. Given that this was a castle and grounds that was occupied since about 700 AD by various archbishops it is very impressive and was our favorite site. We then went down from the castle and had a nice lunch at an Austrian restaurant with bratwurst and sauerkraut. The restaurant was on the horse carriage tour so we heard the clip clop of horse hooves while we dined. We then went over to St. Peters cathedral, cemetary and atrium and looked at the sepulchres and the catacombs. In the sound of music film, this is where Maria and the children hid from the Nazis. The catacombs are quite small with only two large rooms, but the view down is cool. We then went back to the entrance of the downtown area and thankfully grabbed the number 10 bus, and rode it back to our hotel area. We left town and got some oil for the rental caryes, leaks...😡33 euros per quart for the car and headed towards Unterneukirken. The highway follows the German Austrian border and goes through some of the most lovely fertile farm fields and forests glens I've ever seen. The corn is six feet tall. The grain has been mowed in most places and the fields are full of green luscious grass with an occasional pasture of cows grazing contentedly. The Raspl restaurant was completely full, and the hotel is lovely. We had a late dinner with some delicious dark beer and bruchetta salmon and tomato toast.      Read more

      Abfahrt 05:00, freie Autobahn bis kurz vor der Grenze zu 🇦🇹. Diesmal haben ¾ der Autoinsassen geschlafen bzw. "nur kurz die Augen zu gehabt!"
      Kurz nach Acht waren wir dann schon in der Altstadt und haben uns auf den Weg zur Bergbahn der Hohensalzburg gemacht. Die "All-Inklusive-Tour" mit allen Museen und Räumen war wirklich toll, natürlich auch weil wir so gut wie allein waren! Nach der Burgbesichtigung ging es noch eine große Runde durch die Altstadt, bevor es weiter zur nächsten Unterkunft ging.Read more
