      Wasser- und Theaterspiele

      September 28, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      Salzburg

      November 30, 2023 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 2 °C

      Music of Salzburg:
Started the day on a sound of music tour where I visited many of the locations they used to film in Salzburg. They looked just like the movie, just covered in a layer of snow. I also got to try a traditional (yet nut-free!) Apple strudel which was soooo good. In the afternoon I visited Mozart's birthplace and museum and got to see his childhood violin and some original handwritten scores.

Fun fact of the day: Mozart spent more than a third of his life in transit, travelling between cities he was performing or working in

      Cooler clim's

      July 23, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Arrived in Austria 🇦🇹 The day was hot but the temperature on the train was lovely and cool. Italy mingled with Austria through the border and soon there was a corridor of steep alps on either side.
The train at one point travelled in a downwardhill direction making it feel like a rollercoaster I couldn't take photos as I felt motion sickness, but it was a bizarre experience. As the train went down and around the view out of the window was filled with other hills and trees like we were in the film Inception. Felt lucky to be able to be doing this!
Hostel Wolfgang is pristine and fresh and we have our own room! TV and ensuite bathroom.

      Schlosspark Hellbrunn 2

      September 21, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      Tour inside the Palace.

The Palace was built by Markus Sittikus Von Hohenems, Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, as just a daytime castle for entertaining his guests. Built in the ‘mannerism’ style between 1612 and 1615, the architect, Santino Solari, was also commissioned by Sittikus to create the plans for Salzburg Cathedral. Unfortunately Sittikus died before it’s completion though his body was later moved there from the Franciscan church in Salzburg.

Because it was a summer residence for daytime entertainment there are no bedrooms in the Palace. The ornate rooms include Ceremonial Hall, Octogon Music room, Chinese room and other rooms devoted to Sittikus’s love of hydraulics, fountains and rare and mythical animals. Each room also detailed Sittikus’s own life and death.

Interesting stories and accounts of what life was like in the Salzburg area in the 17th century as well as the politics of the time.

      Schlosspark Hellbrunn 1

      September 21, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

After a couple of days of showery weather, today was due to be sunshine all day so we caught a bus out of Salzburg to Hellbrunn Palace and Park.

Interesting park to walk around with lake, water fountains, a variety of plants and several fountains and statues, etc. Also includes the original bandstand from a scene in The Sound Of Music!Read more

      Schlosspark Hellbrunn 3

      September 21, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

The Schloss is famous for its water games and trick fountains in the park. These were conceived by Markus Sittikus as a series of practical jokes to be performed on guests. Features include hidden fountains that surprise and spray guests while they partake in the tour (only got slightly wet)! Other features are a mechanical, water-operated and music playing theatre and a grotto with a crown being pushed up and down (plus sprays of water on exit!). 21 different stations with audio guide explanation about the origin and ‘mischief’ of each attraction.Read more

      The Archbishop's Trick Fountains

      July 14, 2017 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

The prince-archbishop after Wolf Dietrich built Schloss Hellbrun, a country estate outside of Salzburg with a very unique garden. He liked to play tricks on his guests with hidden water jets disguised as innocent statuary or walkways.

At an outdoor dining table, if his guests got too rowdy or the prince got bored, they got a wet surprise. And since protocol dictated that they couldn't leave until he stood up, he could have his fun.

Many of the sculptures were hydraulically operated, creating intricate moving figures and even sounds. One replicated 25 different actual bird sounds using bellows and musicbox-like rollers and tines. The moving parts represented very advanced technology for this time.

Yes, we got wet--the tour guide seemed to enjoy playing tricks too!

      Trick Fountains

      October 7, 2017 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Heading back into Salzburg from the snow adventure, we stopped at Hellbrunn Palace to visit the Trick Fountains. The summer residence for the archbishop/prince of Salzburg, Markus Sittikus, he created a garden full of water features to take guests by surprise.

It started raining as we walked through the gardens, and it was already cold... but that didn't stop the tour guide turning on the hidden water features to wet us even more. Everything was powered by water, and still works today, which is a pretty amazing feat.

Late addition: I found out that part of the Sound of Music was filmed in these gardens!

      Das Schloss Hellbrunn

      August 29, 2020 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Read more

      Day 11: Trick water fountains

      July 5, 2016 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Our final challenge was to go on a tour on the gardens of Schloss Hellbrunn and count all the water jets we could find. The guy who built this castle had a twisted sense of humor and he installed all these hidden fountains that he could trigger and surprisingly wet his guests. Now the guides take the tourists through in groups and do the same.

Unfortunately, R and I just missed a few large fountains so our final count was way off. Oh well, that means we are out of the running for first place.
