      30. Salzburg, Austria

      July 15 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

I wish we could have spent a little more time out of the city and in the Lake District of Salzburg, which we got a brief taste of on the SoM tour. I think there were six lakes, and they were all beautiful and not overrun by tourists like Tahoe. But, time is limited, and we had to be satisfied with exploring the city during our last few hours here. A few pix attached...

Btw - this city of 150k accommodates around 1 million tourists a year, 300k of which are credited with coming to Salzburg solely to experience the Sound of Music history.

Day 14 - The last day

      September 4, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

A short trip from Ljubljana to Salzburg and the finish line awaited us.
We spent some time musing about what we learned during our trip... And we learned absolutely nothing. Which in itself is a great insight. Everyday we would get up and feel ambitious. Everyday we would set off and feel happy to be back on the road again... Forget to eat, get stressed, underestimate the time needed to complete a challenge, be frustrated and tired, end up somewhere else than planned. And then look forward to do it all again the next day.

We are who we are. The same need for achievement, struggle, inaptitude that we notice about us in our everyday lives followed us every step of the journey. Only time will tell if we are all the better for them.

Tonight all we can do is celebrate with Berti and Klausi and their bright organge Opel Manta... They won the whole thing and lived the spirit of the rally. Congratulations to you, more than deserved!

Will we be back for another rally? We tell each other 'maybe', but deep inside we already know...

      Salzburg

      October 9, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

I was so excited to wake up in Austria this morning! I started the day with a walking tour with a local guide. The guide was great and the tour was very interesting! The best part of the tour is that it included a lot of the sites from The Sound of Music.. I will be rewatching this when I get home to relive the memories from today.

The rest of the day was free time...yay! My friends and I had a very steep uphill walk to a fortress. The walk was enjoyable because we were all enjoying Nutella crepes! We were surprised to find several biergartens within the fortress. It was so entertaining to imagine people living in the fortress and firing cannons many years ago.

I took the bus into town and roamed around and did some shopping then relaxed in one of Salzburg's squares. The city has some Italian influence, so there are several squares with cafes and markets. Speaking of markets, I ordered a butter pretzel...amazing!

We wound up at a cozy Austrian pub and enjoyed homemade Austrian pasta and a blonde/wheat beer. We finished our wonderful day by sharing an apple strudel and chocolate cake.

I am already sad to leave beautiful Austria tomorrow morning.

      Salzburg

      April 29 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Definitely one of my favourite things!
Were the hills alive with the sound of music? Probably - with all the tourists running around!
It was a lovely train trip to Salzburg and we had good view of the snow capped mountains. Stored our bags in lockers at the station and armed with MORE lunch supplies and a guide book on walks around the town we set out for a long afternoon of sight seeing. Lunch sitting by the Salzach River which whet our appetite for the delightful scenery. I'd heard Salzburg looks like a movie set, but I wasn't prepared for the revelation or how much we enjoyed it - even without SoM sites and shenanigans!
We caught the funicular up to the fortress which looks over the city - and it made the whole day worth it. Spectacular scenery overlooking the town and snow capped mountains - if only we'd known about the cafes on the terraces enjoying those views! The Dom (cathedral) was fabulous too, and it's foundations date from the 9th C!
A walk back to the station for some final Austrian fare, and then boarding our train for the overnight trip to Milan. An adventure in itself with 3 of us in a tiny but well designed cabin. Fell asleep to the gentle rocking of yhe train. A shame it was too dark to see the beautiful scenery outside.

      29. Salzburg: Sound of Music

      July 15 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

My sisters and I know every song from The Sound of Music movie, and can recite most of the narrative as well. I pity the husbands and boyfriends that have tolerated our passionate involvement in the movie whenever we've watched it over the years.

Craig and I took a super fun 4 hour Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, where the exterior scenes in the movie were shot. Our tour guide downloaded a ton of info to us, and we did a sing-along in the bus to many of the songs. It was a blast. Due credit to Craig, who not only tolerated this tour like a trooper, but who was the one who tracked it down and suggested it in the first place.

If you're a Sound of Music afficianado, read on. Otherwise, you might want to move on to the next post.

      Fun facts about the movie:

      - Julie Andrews landed the part after Grace Kelly & Doris Day declined - not enough $ for them

      - Sean Connery (can he even sing?) and Bing Crosby were considered for the Captain's role

-The Salzburg portion of the shoot, scheduled to take 6 weeks actually took 11 weeks, because they filmed during rainy season

      - Christopher Plummer was a classically trained pianist, and would often spend evenings tinkling the ivories and enjoying an apertif in the company of Leisl, who confesses to having had a crush on him then.

      - The movie took 9 months in total to film and incurred corresponding child actor issues, like Marta losing her baby teeth, and Frederick growing 6" during that time

      - Edelweiss is not really an Austrian song at all! It was written by Rogers & Hammerstein for the movie. Many Austrians don't know the song at all.

      - The Von Trapps did not escape Austria over the mountains. They took a train to Italy the day before the border closed, then came to the US, settling in Stowe VT, because it reminded them of home.

      - Maria was not really in love with the Captain when she married him (what???). And he knew it. Rather than ask if she would be his wife, he tapped into her love of and devotion to the children, and asked if she would become the mother of his children. Of course, she did end up falling in love with him over time. 💕

      Salzburg

      October 29 in Austria ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Söll, Kizbühel, Zel am See, Reith am Winkel ja Hochfilzen. Päivän päätteeksi löysimme autolle parkin Salzburgista.
Vanhankaupungin nähtävyyksistä kävimme katsomassa tuomiokirkon ja Mozartin syntymäkodin.

      Abreise und Salzburg

      November 3, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Read more

      Salzburg - Auftakt zur Hochzeit

      June 5, 2020 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

    • Day 58

      Salzburg

      December 10, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ❄️ 1 °C

      How did our night go?

We have cancelled our hostel accommodation in Berlin and Kosovo and booked hotels 😆😆😆

I was dying of heat and had an absolute hissyfit around 1am and took my doona out of the cover and just used the cover. Would have slept without anything If not for the suspicious characters in the room - am the only woman in the room too,
so kept the cover on as a sense of security.
      Was much better after that.
Getting pretty sick of places with heating you cant turn off.

Will in a terrible mood because he is so tired.
The carry on this morning from the drunk men didn’t bother me but did everyone else.

Old mate crazy pulled off a conn we think. He has calmed the drunk men stole €20 out of his wallet by his bed. And went on a big “ I was going to stay one more night but now I have no money and I have to check out by 10 what am I going to do” blah blah and then some guy offered to give him 20.
I am unconvinced. He has been here a looooong time. His food and shit is everywhere.
Apparently his wife is coming and will pay him back. Idk. Couldn’t hear everything as I was pretending to be asleep so I didn’t awkwardly NOT offer him money…
Also he is complaining the drunk men woke him up. If you are awake you would notice someone going through your stuff. Especially these very drink people NOT in stealth mode.
Also Will said they didn’t go anywhere near him.
I think he played a good game.
And is here another night 🙄

Went to the Baulkan bakery and got some Banitsa .
AMAZING 😭😭😭 we have driven 1.5 hours one way to buy banitsa in Brisbane
And it was so hot 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Will swapped with me cause my piece was older and therefor not as steaming.
      What a good husband.

Someone asked us for directions to the Markets while we were walking towards the fortress so we ended up walking together. They were a British couple in their 60’s who were visiting just to see the Christmas markets.
Walked with them for about 2.5km just chit chatting before parting ways.
Walked through a lovely cemetery to get to the ticket booth - it was beautiful covered in the snow. 💕
Bought tickets to the fortress - got the all inclusive ones for 3€ extra but in all honestly I dont know what that got us.
      The map was terrible.
Got the lift thing up which was fun.
From there it was boring. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I think it has such potential. The bones of the fortress are amazing but the displays are shocking.
Went to the “armory” and it’s a white painted room with 2 generic pieces of armor and a bunch of interactive displays for kids like digitally uploading your face to a knights body.
      Terrible.
This is the armory of an impressive fortress and this is the best you can do?

In the center were Christmas markets which were not relevant to the fortress and yet still the highlight.
Went exploring. A lot of aimless walking around because no signage and map just has Points A,B,C & D but doesn’t say what those points are…
The ONLY really awesome part we found was what I believe was the bakery turned into a tavern and the vibe was incredible. It was like every medieval show ever. But didn’t stay as it was packed and didn’t get a pic either cause small and cramped it was too personal to point my camera at a group of people at a table eating. 😅
Walked and entered an area that had marionette doll displays. In fairness they were very well done it’s just not something that interests me. I can imagine how fabulous it would have been back in its day with story telling. I think my problem with them is they didn’t look particularly old and if they aren’t original I think they are stupid. If original then I liked it.
Essentially, depends if used or not. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      Went into a museum section.
      Pff rubbish.
I don’t think it’s cause I’ve been spoilt in other places, even though I have.
I still think this is terrible in its own right.
It was big empty rooms with shit displays?
Idk. I think the French army museum has ruined me for everything else.
I’ve seen proper Napoleon outfits. Your singular replica in your empty room is crap.
Terrible signage so don’t know importance of what I’m looking at.
      Complain complain complain 😅
I still had a good time doing it. I just though it was rubbish 🤣
Was really keen for the dungeon.
Used language in the minimal amount of displays appropriate for 6 year olds. No talk of torture or the terribleness that would have happened. Just a hole in the floor really.
“They would have been hungry in the dungeon” was about as gruesome as it got..

Went up to a view point and can’t see a thing.
      It’s so bad it’s funny.
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH SOUND OF MUSICCCCCCCC.
      Not here they aren’t.

And that concluded the whole thing.

Found a ledge where everyone had made snowmen so we made some too. Mine was crap but Will did a self portrait of me. The nose is less than desirable however accurate it may be 🙄😂
Got some gluwëin at the market then got the lift back down. Got a good spot so got nice views as we came back under the fog.
We then went and got Will his haircut. They didn’t speak a lick of English but I was allowed in today without a fuss and only cost 13€.
We then walked home past the panorama tours booth and bought tickets to Hallstatt tomorrow.
Might as well. It was in my original itinerary but weather isn’t great so could go either way. I’ll regret not going I think so glad we booked it.
When walking the most perfect star shaped snowflake landed on us. Took a pic ☺️
Got some subway for lunch which was fab then hung out in the foyer with the Wi-Fi as I reorganized our lives. I booked Berlin this morning but cancelled and booked Pristina then.
Cancelled our hostels which mean in reality on 2 more nights in a hostel dorm ever 🥲🥲
      What a ride.

Hung out in the room for a bit. Old mate has restocked all his food.
It always German people who are the rudest turds in hostels. ALWAYS.
I don’t think our room is going to completely fill tonight unfortunately. Hahaha

Went to an Asian buffet for dinner. I forget how much I love buffets. They are the best. Even when food is average, they are the best.
They had deep fried banana and I had about 20.
I normally only get when I go Brazilian bbq.
      Loovvveeeeeee.

      It’s snowing so heavily!!!

If he wasn’t such a loon I would ask old mate to shut the fuck up and stop gaming in a public space but don’t want to be murdered in my sleep.

Keen for our tour tomorrow and very excited for Berlin now we have a hotel.
