      KIRCHBERG AN DER PIELACH

      May 19, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      May 18, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      August 8, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      Creative Raincoat ☔

      September 27, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Quote of the day: when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade!
So basically I have no idea how this happened but my raincoat was stolen off my bunk bed at some point in the locked 8 person dorm in Vienna. Mia and I are still mind boggled how this happened but whatever. I'm almost at the end of my trip so I'll manage. BUT, when we started out hike it was POURING rain and my cotton sweater really wasn't going to cut it...so I made a rain coat out of garbage bags😎😎Read more

      Viennese Mountain Hike

      September 27, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Today's hike was amazing in all. We took an hour and a half train outside Vienna to Puchberg am Schneeberg which was on the eastern border of the Viennese Alps. The mountain we hiked was the highest mountain in lower Austria (just realized that after the fact 😂 - 2650m). We hiked about 21 km with 1200m of elevation (again only realizing this after we had already done it 😂). At the top it was SO windy! Craziness and lots of laughs. Then, on the way back down, we stopped at the mountain restaurant and got one of the best apple struddles I've ever had and a warm hot chocolate (everything was wet and the wind really sealed the deal). It was so yummy omg. We also had an Austrian cake and another strudel filled with a cream cheese mix. Also delicious. Finally, the hut also had a mountain dog 🥰 my heart ❤️

Overall, probably the most unprepared I've been for a hike but was soso great and had a blast. Would do it all over again and shared so many laughs.

(Context: the guy was 19 and from Germany. He had breakfast with us and we invited him to join. Nice to have an extra person and some new stories to hear but I think by the end of the day we were okay to go out separate ways 😂😬)

      Snackgame aufstocken 🍿🥨

      August 30, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Read more

      Vodni Nadrz Lipno to Traisen

      July 21, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Another short trip today (just 250km) but we’ve hit another country! We’re now in Austria in a beautiful campsite on the edge of the mountains. It was hot again today so didn’t make get so far and had to stop a few times but it’s wonderful to get a taste of the alps. We rode along the Danube, which is wide and lazy, before hitting some smaller twister roads and then heading south in search of higher altitudes and a respite from the heat.

A rest night tonight, showers, good food, lovely people and a brilliant alcoholic drink that you can only get in this part of Austria. Luckily the owner said he can ship the homemade syrup home with us if we need!

HIGHLIGHTS - lovely people of Austria, beautiful campsite
LOW POINTS - the heat (again), breakfast
ROADS - Klingenbergstaße, Naarntalstaße, route 3 along the Danube

      Mariazell

      August 21, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      Siehe https://www.mariazell.at/

      Mariazell

      September 29, 2021 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Mariazell is a hub of winter sports in the Austrian Alps and is said to be a favorite ski destination in this part of the world. The town is also well known for its Basilica (see another post).
The 1st 2 pictures are in the Hauptplatz or main square. It is a lovely alpine town.
The other 2 pictures are taken from the top of the tower on top of Bürgeralte, the mountain behind Mariazell. While the weather wasn't all that great, these pictures give you a feel for why Mariazell is popular as a ski destination and as an area of spectacular scenery. There may be no snow in evidence, but I can say that while standing atop that tower, it certainly felt like snow was close.

      Mariazell Basílica

      September 29, 2021 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Also known as the Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary, this is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The site dates back to the 13th century, but the current building dates to the 17th century.
The 1st picture is of the front facade. The yellow in front of the door is a lift vehicle for some maintenance work in progress.
The 2nd picture is in the nave looking at the very ornate Gnadenkapelle or grace chapel. This chapel is said to be located on the site of the 1st monastic cell here and serves as the chancel of the nave. If you look in the center of all the decorative work, you can make out a small white gown . This gown dresses a statue of Mary said to have been brought to the site by the first monks in the 12th century.
If you look above the altar and altarpiece of the grace chapel, you can see that there is a large domed space behind the altar. This area houses the high altar shown in the 3rd picture and the stature of Mary of a pedestal.
The last picture looks up at the main organ that dates to the 17th century, with numerous renovations and enhancements over the he centuries.
